David A. to the Ladies: You're Going to Have to Wait

After coming thisclose to winning it all, David Archuleta took some time Friday to reflect on his Idol experience, what might come next and if he'll ever have time for a girlfriend — or anything else, for that matter.

American Idol's Season 7 may be over, but don't expect to see David A. out on the dating scene just yet (sorry, ladies!). We know, there's a hungry crowd of would-be GFs awaiting, but once the Idol mania dies down a little bit, David A.'s planning to focus on his career. Not only that, but he's pretty sure he's not mature enough to even know what he wants yet.

"Being 17," he told press, "I'm not really mature enough to understand those feelings yet." He also doesn't want to deal with the "drama" of relationships that he sees his friends go through. Of their trials, he says, "It's not like you're going to live off that person, like your infatuation is going to support you. I want to make sure I don't get confused with a feeling for someone so quickly. I so don't want to deal with the drama."

The right girl for him, though, would have a great personality, be someone he's able to connect with, have respect for themselves — "but not in an arrogant way, just someone who cares about others as well. [Sighs]" With the same humbleness he shows on stage, David added, "[It's] just something I will want to focus on later in life. But I'm so young, I'm still learning so much, I have to get to know [what I want]."

Luckily for David (less so for his admirers), is that he has a lot of options coming up, not to mention a stellar approach when it comes to staying cool under pressure. One of the most notable things about David A., apart from his mega-voice, was his poise throughout the competition, especially for someone his age. He shared his Idol strategy with TVGuide.com. "Dealing with all the struggles throughout this [show]," he said, "I try to learn from them, I try not to look at it as, 'that was a terrible time,' I try to think, 'That was a challenge I learned from.' The more you stress out about something, the worse a time you have, and I didn't want to focus on that."

Archie said that he told himself throughout the challenges, "'This is a great experience, and I'll never get this opportunity again. This is an experience of a lifetime.' I tried to enjoy it as much as I could."

Some of the toughest moments to maintain his 'tude, though, was when he was working on songs. "Sometimes the difficulty was when I'd try arranging a song," he explained, "and there were so many opinions from the arrangers and producers. It would get confusing when I wouldn't be able to try something."

Yet, despite the confusion and the ultimate besting by David C., David A. is nothing but pleased at his Idol run. "I'm feeling great about this," he told press. "I think [Cook] deserved it, he proved it week after week, and he's such a great guy, too. My main priority wasn't to win the competition, but to do my best. You can suck and people can vote enough for you to win, and that wouldn't feel very good. But we both gave it our all. I don't think I could’ve done anything better."

Of course, this isn't the last we'll see from David A. He plans on making an album that's more pop than ballad, reminding us that he is, after all, still 17. — Anna Dimond

Bravo, David A. You were a great competitor. I was impressed by your humility and talent, and your shyness was endearing. I am looking forward to watching your rising star, and I hope you continue to be the good role model you appear to be right now. My nieces love you!

DAVID ARCHULETA, if you are reading this, i just want to tell u this that, no matter what happened, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE LOVED AND YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A WINNER IN PEOPLE'S EYES.....i mean ...GOSH! you are hardly 17 and look at what you have achieved so far at such a tender age, when boys of your age get into ridiculous stuff and their lives are over !!!
YOU , ARCHIE wont believe this, but NOT ONLY IN AMERICAN , BUT ALL OVER THE WORLD....PEOPLE are "CRAZY" like "HELL" about you.....THERE is a ARCHIE-MANIA going around the world and you should listen to what paula abdul (for once) said on the final moment "this is the beginning for you, ARCHULETA!"

you deserve MORE than this....YOU WILL ALWAYS BE THE MOST "SUCCESSFUL" ARTIST and THE MOST FAMOUS person "IN THE WORLD"!!!!
I can BET on that!!!!

I applaud David's maturity. Statements like that prove that he is wise beyond his years. He's quite right. People (and not just today's youth...I've known ADULTS that do it) get into relationships based on lust rather then love. Somewhere out there is the girl for him and he will find her eventually.

When I first read the headline "David Archuleta has some bad news for the ladies" I have to admit my first thought was..GAY. Am I the only one who gets that from him? Not that it matters really, but I was just curious.

Not to be flippant, but right off the bat I pegged David as one of the "drama kids." The guy can sing, obviously, I just hope he doesn't spend the rest of his adult life trying to "cover up," his sexuality in order to further his career.

He wouldn't be the first pop star do to that, but I just think it's sad that he's being asked to do it at such a young age and under massive scrutiny.

I think it's pretty funny that anyone would even presume to think they know anything about David A's or anyone else's sexuality from seeing him on television a couple of hours a week. He actually seems pretty innocent - coming from a sheltered background I imagine he is innocent. But that is none of our business any way. He's obviously got something going on in his brain to be smart enough to realize he has a lot to learn - too bad everyone isn't like that.

Good luck Archie - you are talented and you'll go far.

For someone who claims he's "not yet mature enough for a relationship"....I beg to differ. There are people who live their whole lives and never grasp the concept you just mentioned.

I thought you were magnificent all the way through...and a most gracious didn't-quite-get-there. You will go far, David!

Little David is gay. Its cool but i hope his career doesnt force him to hide his true self, like Clay Aiken.

"I'm not really mature enough to understand those feelings yet."
That sounds very similar to the statement that so many closeted people have made over the years.

If David is gay as many have suggested, I certainly hope that he finds the strength, comfort and support to be able to "come out." His family seems quite strict and I hope that their beliefs are "open." Whether he's gay or not, I hope he can find happiness in life and has a successful career.

He seems like a nice kid who needs to get out of the death grip that his father seems to have on him. If he is gay, that death grip of his father's will certainly not be helpful in his being true to himself. If he's not gay, that death grip will probably still make his life much more difficult than it needs to be. I wish him only the best.

I am dumbfounded by the people on this board. Because David said he's not interested in pursuing a relationship right now, he's GAY??? Amazing! The kid is 17 years old. Let him be a kid and quit making assumptions about his sexuality based on watching him in a singing competition! My own assumption is that most of the people posting on this message board are adults, and this is not very adult-like behavior!
