VIDEO: Idol Idles Archuleta's "Thank You, Fans" Concert

C'mon, Idol honchos, give the kid a break.

American Idol has kiboshed a Friday concert planned by runner-up David Archuleta in Salt Lake City as a thank you to his fans with proceeds going to charity.

KUTV says contractual obligations between Archie and the show got in the way. The 17-year-old's agent, Roger Widynowski, told the TV station he couldn't hold the concert because it wasn't an Idol-sanctioned event, but said it would be held after the Idol tour, which kicks off July 1, winds down in September. — J.R. Yep. The Idol producers have once again screwed a contestant - and something for charity no less! Like we should be surprised. The reasons why I can't figure out why someone would subject themselves to signing on with these people just keeps getting longer and longer. Instant fame - eternal headache.

While I'm glad that TPTB at AI are going to let this go on in the future, they should have just let it happen now. Seems to me to be a bit of bad PR on their part.

Before we go hatin on TPTB at AI (geez I feel like I'm in 8th grade) having a little experience in contract and entertainment law (just enought to be dangerous :^O) I can tell you it's not just a matter of AI waving a magic wand. There are all sorts of vendors, contractors, unions, etc., contracted to work for AI, and if an AI performer does a billed concert, even for charity, all those involved in the upcoming tour could sue b/c they are supposed to have exclusive rights to these performances. Now, if they were able to go to each party individually and ask, I'm sure they would be more than happy to sign off on it b/c it is a charity event. The problem here is that this seemed pretty last minute and with a tour there was probably no time to go through the proper legal channels to get it approved.

What happened to "IDOL GIVING BACK????" All the money was going to charity you'd think they'd use their heads and let him do the 1 show that he wanted to do as a thank you and donate the money, but then again I guess their ratings wouldn't go up for this so why should they???

Sorry Archie, you signed a contract and you will abide by it. I am sick and tired of 'prima donnas' wanting to renegotiate their legal and binding contracts.
An example.....football player signs a contract in 2006 giving him, $5 mil a year. In 2008 he finds out that another player just signed a contract for $10 mil a year. Now he wants to renogotiate a new contract. Usually the uber rich owner, rather then listening to the pouting and whining gives in and simply raises ticket prices. Why? Because the sucker fans will pay.
I hope that the A.I. suits will hold him to his contract and not give in.

It does seem a little petty for the producers to pull this, but ctheslayer is right. This is a business and he signed a contract. Why would he, his dad, his manager, etc. think they could do this without going through the proper legal channels? Did he do that and was still shot down?

To Joenamherst:

Where does it say that Archie is getting paid? It says that the proceeds were going to charity! I don't see where Archie comes across as a Prima Donna when he wants to give a concert where ALL THE PROCEEDS go to charity.

Bedda1114 said it clearly: What happened to “IDOL GIVING BACK????”

Archie was doing that exactly! Take your trash talking somewhere else!

You're right , Magpie, but it wouldn't be up David A's people to get the okay from all the people AI is beholden to. That would have been AI's job, and you are talking thousands of people, in a very short time, as they are about to start up a tour.

This reminds me of that stunt David A's dad pulled in the last weeks regarding the lyrics change - it's called show BUSINESS, and business and commercial codes apply.

Had he not been billed as a feature performer, it probably would have been fine - look at these last minute celebrity fundraisers on tv for 9/11, the tsunami and Katrina - the promos and even the info on the tivo said "celebrities." By not being billed these folks were able to appear without contractual hassles. Same thing with unbilled cameos.

Magpie33:

A smart agent would go through the proper channels.

It doesn't matter to me at this point. It still makes 19 Productions (American Idol producers) look bad because it was for "CHARITY".

Hey CtheSlayer, glad to "see" you post since AI finals.

Always looking forward to what ya gotta say!

See you around!

Hey, don't knock AI for "not giving back". Archie can still DO the charity concert, he just has to wait to do it until after the AI concert tour is over. I can understand why the contract has to stick here. If Archie goes out and does a concert on his own (for charity or not) before the AI concert tour, it will detract from the sales of the AI concert tour. AI only wants what they're contractually entitled to. I'm sure the charity it was supposed to support won't mind waiting 3 or 4 months for their money.

So what! David Archuleta, wanted to do a concert for 'charity'. Aside the legal channel's-bla-bla-bla.
David A, wanted to give back. To me that is the personality of this young man.
He wasn't going for finical gain, and most likely did not understand the "fine print" of his contract, given this would be for 'Charity'. I don't buy the, whining or prima-donna remark's! I did not witness that when he was runner up. In this world there are 'Good upstanding' people. Stop looking for the negative. 'Go David A, you got my vote.

hagen5: only one person made a "prima donna" remark. I think most people agree here that he had very good intentions and was only misguided or naive as to the business aspect he is suddenly in, which he will need to learn and learn quickly since his life will turn into a rollercoaster ride of fame, hopefully. And RachelScribblesis right - I'm sure any charity would be willing to wait a few months to get this done right.
