George Michael and Iron Man to Rock Idol Finale?

Who is "the biggest star in the world right now"? Earlier this week, American Idol exec producer Nigel Lythgoe teased a truly stellar surprise performer for Wednesday night's results show. To those of you who guessed it would be Michael Jackson... well, you may be at least half right. TV Guide hears that George Michael, a chum of both Lythgoe and Simon Cowell, will be on hand for the Season 7 wrap-up, in part to promote his new greatest hits album.

But is the former Wham! front man the Big Name we've been hearing about? TMZ is now reporting that "the biggest star in the world" may actually be referring to Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr., who through some computer wizardry and alongside Jack Black and Ben Stiller will sing back-up for a vintage clip of Glady Knight's "Midnight Train to Georgia." Um, OK.

Whatever transpires on finale night, you are invited to join Idol blogger Erin here at TVGuidecom, as she live blogs the entire two-hour spectacular!

I heard Madonna is making an appearance tonight. I think that's for whom the comment was made.

Is the former Wham! front man the first name that comes to mind when you hear "biggest star in the world"?

Not exactly.

This is a bit off topic, but exactly who does Idol Chatters think is the biggest star in the world? Anyone?

So George Michael's "the biggest star in the world right now"? Maybe 20 years ago, but today? Sure, right, whatever. *insert sarcasm here*

At least we won't be seeing Miley Cyrus tonight!

George Michael is the ultimate IDOL, he has been around for 25 years. He wrote his biggest hits. Careless Whisper was the Billboard no 1 song of the year, so was Faith. Faith was the Grammy album of the year. Then he was supposed to be a has been when he made Listen Without Prejudice (Freedom 90- Praying for time) at the age 27. Respect George. What a talent, what a voice. I saw 25 Live in London. It was an incredible show. You have to see it!!!

Shows what I know. When I saw a headline about "Michael" being on the show I was excited thinking it was MICHAEL JOHNS!

George Michael IS someone to brag about. And I'll be happy to see and hear him tonight!!

Catherine, he's performing in Chicago for his tour next month and I'm hoping to see it. GM has a great voice, and I just love "Praying for Time," "Father Figure," and "Jesus to a child."

There is nobody in the whole world I would rather hear sing than George Michael, so I hope this rumor is true! George is one of the best songwriters of our time, and his voice has no equal. That's my opinion, it's been my opinion for the last 15 years, and I'm sticking to it!B-)
