Stud Returns to Idol

"Velvet Teddy Bear" Ruben Studdard, who has been seriously MIA from the music scene lately, is returning to American Idol. The Hollywood Reporter says that the Season 2 winner will serenade contestants as they are eliminated with a special "goodbye" song. What ugly-cry-inducing song will Ruben croon? None other than a cover of Kenny Loggins' "Celebrate Me Home," which will be produced by Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam.

Perhaps for contestants who get the boot, like poor Alaina Whitaker last night, Ruben's mellow sound will soothe them into being able to shut off the waterworks and sing their swan songs.

Traditionally, these "goodbye" songs have done very well with Idol exposure. Daniel Powter's "Bad Day," (from Season 5) went on to sell 1.9 million copies and was the top download of 2006. Sounds like the Stud needed a little help in the sales department, and Idol producers know the singer is still very popular with the Idol crowd. So now the song will be available on iTunes for download starting March 12, and will even be featured on one of the "best of" compilation albums to be released later this year. Rev up those iPods, because here comes the Stud! — Erin Fox

Are you excited to hear Ruben sing off the booted contestants? Will you be downloading his tune?

I thought they were using another song. Are they changing the song once it goes to the top 12? I like the one they're using now. I don't care for Ruben.

Sorry, I think Ruben is terrible. He shouldn't have won in the first place.

Yes I would listen to Ruben sing anything. I love him and hate how his career is going or not going.

I am VERY excited to read this news. I have loved Ruben since day one and I have enjoyed seeing him on "American Idol Rewind" that airs on the weekends. I am sad that his career has stalled over that last few years (I even heard a rumor that he lost his record contract) but hopefully this will jump start things again!

Reuben has a great voice and if he should have won or not is a moot point now. I'm glad the AI people are once again using an AI alum instead of some "outsider." Bad Day was a dumb choice, while Home was a good one...as is this. I just wish Reuben had a better team guiding his career. He should be the new Luther Vandross, and not some everyday, struggling R & B singer.

I love Ruben's creamy voice...can't wait to hear him sing on the show. At least I'll hear one good performance that night.

Sorry. Ruben is one of the least talented winners ever. Every song he sings sound exactly like ever other one. Only the lyrics change. Utterly forgettable.

As for last nights vote, no girl that deserved to go, went. And you can see in the videos that they KNEW they didn't deserve to stay.

Hats off to those vote for the worst sites. Thinking you're being all cute when you're really screwing around with people's lives.

You're all thinking of "Hollywood's Not America" by Ferras. I guess that was only the Hollywood week exit song. You can see Ferras give an interview and hear his song at ew.com. Adorable isn't he?

I remember looking at this myspace too, which was great.
