Top 7 Power Rankings: Jason Wins as Michael Loses

Jason seemed to be the biggest benefactor of Michael's surprising exit from the American Idol competition, boosting his status in the weekly TVGuide.com Power Rankings to a decided third place (with 16.9 percent of your votes). Syesha, meanwhile, dodged yet another bullet when Michael took one. Simon's slam may have cost Carly her long-awaited tie with Brooke, as the Celtic crooner drifted back into the No. 5 spot.

As for the race to be your new Idol, David C. is holding steady at No. 1 — for a fourth time out of the past five weeks — with 38.6 percent of the vote, yet David A. is ever so slowly closing the gap.

Top 7 Power Rankings
38.6% David Cook
27.3% David Archuleta
16.9% Jason Castro
6.8% Brooke White
6.1% Carly Smithson
3.1% Kristy Lee Cook
1.1% Syesha Mercado

I think Jason was helped by MJ's departure, but he was also helped by his performance last week. Like it or hate it, it's no coincidence he has the top AI Itunes download this week. Ahead of both David's by a considerable margin.

He also boosted Iz's original version into the top 10 downloads for most of last week.

Though he has a tall order this week with Mariah, so not sure how he will fare there.

I just want Syesha or KLC to go this week. Finally.

I guess AI continues to be a popularity contest..having any real singing talent doesn't matter.

I am a Syesha fan..but this young lady is very talented..but clearly she doesn't have the fan base.

...but David Cook, Jason or Brooke are not the best singers..but I guess they have a large fan base...

I'm going to continue to support Syesha until she sings a bad song...or makes a song choice.

Syesha is indeed very talented as a singer, but I think her problem is that she doesn't have a distinct personality. She can imitate various singers well or sing a type of singing well, but there isn't much distinctive about her, despite her excellent vocal ability.

Syesha has a good voice. I don't think anybody debates that. It's not just about popularity, but a total package. The issue for me with Syesha is that she doesn't emotionally connect to the songs she chooses. I can't even remember what she's sang because it is that forgettable. I'm not saying it is that way for everyone, but part of music also has to be the emotional impact. That's where I think Syesha fails.

The only one remaining that I think is horrible every week is Jason.

Kristy Lee and Syesha have pretty voices, particularly Syesha, but they both bore me to tears and are not good performers.

If David Cook doesn't win, I'll be very surprised.

I don't think both of the Davids should hold No. 1 and 2 spots every single week. Sometimes they are the best and sometimes they aren't. I think people just vote for the same person every week, no matter if there are others a lot better that week.

My thoughts of the remaining idols.

David C Should win he is definitely going to sell cd's just like Daughtry.

David A OVERRATED

Jason OVERRATED

Brooke She is just okay.

Carly She is getting worse every week.

Kristy As long as she sings country she
is safe.

Syesha Clearly the best female voice but she just aint clicking with the audience just like Jennifer Hudson but hey Syesha would love to follow those footsteps. And about her singing Fantasia's song and Simon said that you couldnt compare Syesha to Fantasia or Whitney because their better. But there's no way you can compare Fantasia to superstar WHITNEY either SIMON!

I actually think this whole group is pretty talented, though I would have ditched Kristy towards the beginning. She is getting better though, so I'll give her that.

But I don't understand Syesha. She can't perform Fantasia's crowning song and then not expect to get compared to her. Syesha might have had a shot at this if she had picked better songs. I see this is a minority opinion here, but she is the one shooting herself in the foot. I actually agree with Simon that she's too busy trying to emulate every other singer instead of just being herself.

As for why David and David are always on top. They have pretty solid fangirly fanbases that will vote for them no matter how they perform. Same with Jason, though I suppose his has fluctuated a bit more.

"Like it or hate it, it's no coincidence (Jason) has the top AI Itunes download this week. Ahead of both David's (sic) by a considerable margin."

Where are you getting this information from?

According to iTunes: "American Idol contestants are represented . . . in alphabetical order. iTunes and FOX are committed to presenting the contestants in a fair and balanced manner online and on-air. For this reason sales of performances . . . from the current season will not be reflected in iTunes charts."

Do you have some secret source or are you misreading the "popularity" rating? Those only compare various versions of a song, not total sales.

I can't wait to see the iTunes sales figures when they're finally released (they will be, right???) at the end of the season. I've bought the studio versions every one of David Cook's songs and even "Innocent" is great, as sub-par as it sounded last week on the show. Carly's and David A.'s (whose I buy for my kid) studio versions are incredibly well-done.

David C. is just my personal favorite. He didn't start out that way, but I just love the guy. Haven't loved anybody as much on Idol since Chris Daughtry in terms of somebody I'd drop actual money on.

"I don't think both of the Davids should hold No. 1 and 2 spots every single week. Sometimes they are the best and sometimes they aren't. I think people just vote for the same person every week, no matter if there are others a lot better that week."

The "Power Rankings" question TV Guide poses is: "Of the remaining wannabes, who is your current pick to win 'American Idol'?"

They're not asking who gave the best individual performance that past week (although that would be a great question). Just because somebody stumbles badly one week doesn't mean they should get the boot. Consistency week in and week out means a lot to some viewers.

David C. has been the most consistent throughout the season. As disappointing as his performance was last week (and, again, the studio version is terrific), he's been the standout as far as I'm concerned. David A., too, has been very consistent. The others have been all over the place.

One good peformance does not an Idol make (see: Eze, Chikezie)!

I liked Brooke early in the competition, but now I can't stand her. She and KLC are the least talented singers remaining and should be the next to go. Syesha is the best female singer by a longshot and if she picks the right song choice the next few weeks she will be the last female standing.

I forgot to add: these rankings mean absolutely nothing. Of course David A. is going to "slowly close the gap" to David C.; as more and more contestants are voted off, people have fewer people to vote for. The fact that Syesha is last is simply ridiculous, but the fact that Brooke is the highest ranked female is even more so ridiculous. As someone else said, this poll is just a popularity contest and has absolutely no reflection on actual singing talent.

Ugghh.. I really just want Kristy to go already... I'm getting tired of being forced to have to hear her boring/safe/repetitive/forgettable performances every week. I feel like I'm listening to the same thing every time she performs
