Star Says McG's Fastlane Is Speeding to DVD!

Last week in his "Joy of Sets" column right here at DVD News & Reviews, Damian Holbrook posted his "wish list of shows [he] would LOVELOVELOVE to show up on DVD during 2008" (that's a direct quote). Near the top of Damian's list was the 2002 series Fastlane, created by McG through Warner Bros. Television, and airing on the Fox Network.

The show starred Peter Facinelli (Six Feet Under, Damages), Bill Bellamy (How to Be a Player, Any Given Sunday) and Tiffani Thiessen (aka Tiffani-Amber Thiessen; Beverly Hills 90210, Saved by the Bell) as undercover cops using confiscated goods to go after the crooks in L.A., and included a ton of great guest stars among the 22 episodes produced.

Now Peter Facinelli's official website is saying that the show is on its way to DVD this coming summer. If that doesn't put a smile on Damian's face, I'm not sure what will!

It's about time! At peter's site, there's an episode guide for fastlane and for each ep, he lists the songs that were in the show and there are some pretty big names in there. I don't listen to any of them, but I recognize their names.

I wish there was some official word from the studio though.

I loved Fastlane. I think Fox didn't give it the chance it deserved. Matter of fact I think they wanted it to fail purposely when they kept moving the show to different days of the week.

It was probably a lot more expensive than they had imagined.

I have a hard time reading comments like this. No "network" (not as an entity) wants a show to fail purposely; it costs them money! What would be the motivation for funding a show, only to want it to fail?

At most you have a decision-making exec who either makes bad judgements, or else favors one show over another (out of personal preference for the favored show despite what the public thinks, or maybe even out of preference for one show's producer over another).

Anything beyond that could stem from a possible abuse of power. For example, We've all heard stories (let's keep me out of "libel" territory and categorize them as rumors) from back in the past about network execs who basically wanted show-runners to kiss their butt all the time, or else the show would not get favorably placed on the schedule, nor get good marketing (ad buys in mags like TV Guide, or commercials promoting the show, etc.).

Anything is possible, of course, but I don't think Fastlane was the victim of such a situation. It debuted on Wednesday nights, and according to this, Fastlane debuted against shows like The West Wing, The Amazing Race, The Bachelor, The Twilight Zone, and Birds Of Prey...all of which had dedicated fan followings to some degree, which Fastlane didn't benefit from. It's a no-brainer that the show would get moved at some point. When it did, it was after the first of the year for 2003, and it moved to Friday nights (taking over for Firefly) where it stayed until cancellation. No new episodes ever debuted on any nights other than Wednesdays or Fridays. The show that took over the Wednesday night slot was Bernie Mac, which proved to be much more popular and competitive than Fastlane was.

Sorry, but there's just no case for thinking that Fox "wanted the show to fail".

I agree Dave, but I also believe that networks do sometimes not have high expectations for a show so they cancel it fast. One being Wonderfalls. They only aired 4 episodes and at different times/nights and not in order. How do they expect us to follow a show all over the week and follow the storyline when they do this? It's ridiculous. One show that I think they did give some chance to is undeclared. I think they did show all but 2 episodes, but I think they did show some of those out of order too.

I think I'm kind of rambling. sorry.
