Run Lola Run is the internationally acclaimed German-language movie starring Franka Potente as "Lola." After receiving a frantic call from her boyfriend Manni, Lola has 20 minutes to replace the 100,000 marks Manni lost, or his mobster boss will kill him.
I think Run Lola Run was the first foreign language film I watched, or at least the first one I remember. I used to prefer dubs of foreign movies because it was less work to watch them, but that changed as I got older and realized that something is missed with the dub. The original characters emotion is removed from the scene, replaced by an actor in a sound booth that's trying to deliver his lines, but is completely separated by the action on the screen. I watched Run Lola Run with the original German audio track turned on (Dolby TrueHD 5.1), and it sounded great. I've always been a fan of the soundtrack for the movie, and it sounds absolutely awesome in 5.1. There are 5.1 tracks in Spanish and Portuguese, and an English Dolby TrueHD 5.1, but the voice acting is so brutal, I hope everyone listens to the German soundtrack and turns on subtitles, which are available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
The video, which is a 1080p/1.85:1 transfer, is a mixed bag. Run Lola Run was shot on 35mm film, except about 20-25% of the movie was done on video. Guess what? The video scenes look horrible! There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it either; there are numerous shots that alternate between film and video, and it's very jarring because the video quality is so poor.
The Blu-ray release includes an old (from 98 or 99) commentary track with director Tom Tykwer and Franka Potente (in English), a new featurette, "Still Running," and "Believe" music video. All the bonus material is in English, and you can turn on optional subtitles if you need them.
As seen on TV: Well, the film is full of actors that have appeared on German TV shows, but Franka Potente is the only one to appear on a US show; she was a guest on an episode of The Shield. — Gord Lacey
