Firefly to Get a New, Blu Release

Jewel Staite makes her living these days playing Dr. Jennifer Keller on Stargate: Atlantis, but of course many fans fondly remember her older role as Kaylee on Joss Whedon's Firefly. Staite found time to be a guest the past two weekends at the first rounds of the 2008 Supanova Pop Culture Expo in Australia (March 28-30 in Melbourne and April 4-6 in Brisbane; she couldn't make it to the Sydney or Perth events).

During a question-and-answer session with fans at her Melbourne appearance, Staite was asked if there's still hope for further adventures with the crew of Serenity. She replied that she thought there was, and that "if they called, I would be there in a heartbeat." In the process of answering this question, she dropped quite a bombshell:

"I just heard that they're re-releasing Firefly, a special edition of Firefly in a box set," Staite said. "They actually asked me if I was able to come down to L.A. and do a commentary in the spring. So I think that would be fun."

We checked in with our contacts at Fox Home Entertainment, and they tell us that the release she mentioned is indeed on its way to North America. And this new edition will actually be coming out on Blu-ray!

However, part of the studio's reply was that "word travels fast." This probably means the upcoming release is still in the planning stages (as demonstrated by how recently they requested Staite to participate in the extras). No timetable has been given for when we can expect it to hit stores. It's still probably going to be a while yet, but we'll keep an eye on this, and let you know when a release date and content details are finalized!

Now, if Universal could only be convinced to release a Blu-ray edition of the feature film Serenity at the same time....

What's your take? Will you upgrade your Firefly episodes to a gorgeous-looking high-definition version, complete with new bonus material? Or are you happy with what you've already got on DVD?

I would normally be happy with my DVDs, but since Firefly/Serenity isn't a totally dead franchise and we could end up with more movies if the sales are high enough, this is a special case where I'd be willing to buy a new version of something I already own. After all, it was the sales of the original DVD set that made Serenity possible.

I don't have a Blu-ray player, but I'll buy a new set of Firefly and hang onto it until I do. And while I've already got two copies of Serenity, I'd probably buy it in Blu-ray as well, because I want the onscreen commentary that's in the high-def version.

Blu-ray, schmoo-ray. I'll keep my original DVD set, thanks! I'm a late adopter of new technology.

Sigh...this news makes me miss Firefly all over again. Is that wrong?

I don't have a Blu-Ray unit, but you better believe I'll save every penny until I can buy one if it means clearer, cleaner Firefly! Also, the fact that they're asking the actors back to add extras...you couldn't be a real Firefly fan and not have the entire updated package. I'll be in line waiting for the doors to open when they go on sale!

Wow, I heard about a new DVD set but I didn't know it would be for Blu-ray. I would definitely consider buying it.

I agree on wanting to get Serenity on Blu-ray. Come on Universal!

This is why I hate Fox, they can keep re-releasing some shows, this one, Buffy, Angel and X-Files while dropping other ones in the middle of the series. Take "Reba" for example, they release the first 4 seasons and then stop. There is only Season 5 and the 13 episode Season 6 left to release. It just sucks to not be able to have the whole series on dvd.

I'll buy Firefly and Serenity in whatever format they want to release, even if I don't have the player for it yet. My son's been wanting a PS3 so maybe that will be the solution. Hey, Joss! We're still flying!

Normally, I never buy the same movie or TV show twice. I'm always broke and always have too many shows or movies I want to buy. However, for Firefly and Serenity, I will buy every set that is released. I now have three versions of Serenity (full screen, wide screen and the collector's edition), and I will purchase any and all releases of Firefly that I can get my hands on. It was a wonderful show that was cancelled much too early. Thanks for the heads up!

I currently don't have any plans to upgrade my DVD's to BluRay, but Firefly is a special case, being the best TV show ever! That I will buy when it comes out.
Go Browncoats!

We do not have a BluRay machine, yet, but I think we are going to look into getting one this coming Christmas. Hopefully, the Firefly (and Serenity) are out then.

I do own the current DVD and I have been expecting to upgrade to another version at some point. Can we see more of Jewel Staite, as well as here her commentary? :-x

While my wife's favorite disk sets are Sex and the City (and Gilmore Girls), my favorites (that we watch together) are Buffy, Firefly, and Angel. Guess I like me some Joss Wheedon, huh?

Oh,yeah...a blu-ray Firefly would be sweet and I will gladly pick it up even though I already shelled out the bucks for the regular edition. This was a great show (when watched in the proper sequence Fox!) and one I miss as much, if not more, as Buffy.
