What to Watch During the Strike

Writers in Hollywood walked away from their keyboards at 12:01 this morning: They're officially on strike.

We'll start to see the effects of the strike almost immediately, first with the late-night talk shows, then sitcoms (which often have a team of writers sitting on the set performing rewrites), followed by the scripted dramas and single-camera comedies. The latter have scripts in the can, but those often require rewrites or tweaks, so some of the upcoming episodes may not be as polished as viewers are expecting. In a few months we could be left with news, sports and reality shows, so what will we watch?

I don't have a solution to end the strike, but I can help fill up your TV time. This is the perfect opportunity to dive into a show that's already on DVD, either by rewatching some of the earlier episodes of one of your favorites, or taking a chance on a series you hadn't seen before. For suggestions, visit our TV on DVD page.

Assuming the strike continues to the point where there's nothing new to watch, how are you going to spend your time?

I'll watch dvds. I have lots I haven't had time to watch yet.

Seasons 1 & 2 of Party of Five
Season 3 of veronica mars
the rest of season 2 of supernatural from netflix
Kitchen Confidential
Grosse Pointe
seasons 1 of 227, living single, hill street blues, alien nation, st. elsewhere, 8 simple rules, invasion, profit, wild wild west, welcome back kotter, SNL - I've seen parts of all but 227 and living single. I started watching them, then amazon had another sale and I bought more and they just keep piling up. I'll watch them all eventually though

I have only watched about 1/2 of the first season of six feet under, I have the complete series set.

Plus, I'll probably watch some of the shows that never get old, buffy, freaks and geeks, undeclared, wonderfalls, the episodes of pushing daisies I have taped, 30 Rock, how I met your mother, lois & clark.

yep. my dvd player will be very busy. I think maybe I should get another one, one that upconverts dvds, since I have an HD tv.

.. Beef up my netflix list! Probably enjoy yet another marathon of my favs from my own collection: Alias, Arrested Development, Friday Night Lights. Think of what I have for gift cards and what tv dvd sets I have been seriously thinking about buying.

Not to mention to catch up on a couple of new shows that I can't normally watch because of scheduling.

I have things stockpiled on VHS tapes over the last 15 or so years so if all my favs run out of new episodes, I'll probably catch up on all the shows and movies I taped over those years that I've been neglecting for so long! Certainly I'll be able to catch up on anything from AMC that aired before they started interrupting their movies with commercials...

I miss those days. When they started airing commercials, I stopped watching.

I get what the writers are trying to do and yes they deserve a piece of the pie too. But by striking and driving everyone to DVDs is kind of going against what they are trying to do. I'm curious if they will work out a deal for retro DVD profits for what sells during the strike. I mean they are striking for profits of DVD sales and they are going to drive people to buy DVDs and not get a profit on them.

My friend has been telling about these things called "books". I'm thinking of giving those a try. ;)

I have alot of TV shows that I have on DVD that I didn't watch when they originally aired so I'll start watching some of those. I have Dark Angel and Millenium. I also just got teh complete series of Twin Peaks last week so I will delve into that.

Books sound good to me. I also would seriously consider dropping TV watching entirely.

I grew up without a TV.

Also I expect to see much more fan fiction written by others.

I'm going to finish watching Freaks & Geeks from Netflix and then I'll delve into what's next in my queue. I have Undeclared and Babylon 5 up next.

Are there any Sci/Fi-Fantasy shows anyone could suggest? I have Buffy, Angel, Farscape, Battlestar Galactica, Alias, Firefly, Wonderfalls. I've seen X-Files, Stargate SG-1, Dr. Who and Eureka and was wondering if someone knew a great show that I could Netflix.

I have been thinking about rewatching Buffy and Farscape again for the 50th time because they are so good they never get old.

Give "The Dead Zone" and "The 4400" a shot, or "Stargate Atlantis"

Hey buffybot, I highly recommend the mini-series The Lost Room if you haven't seen it. The production value is pretty good and the story is really interesting. Stars Peter Krause and Julianna Marguiles with a whole host of other familiar faces. It's not on tv now, unfortunately, but you can add it to your Netflix queue.

I live on a fixed income and use over-the-air TV signals, no cable or satellite to keep costs down. I do rent a movie now and then.

I find reality programs to be manipulative as well as game shows edited to draw out the moment i.e., take a 20 minute game show and make it last an hour.

As I find more ways to speed up my computer I am watching more video clips on the internet instead of TV and I find the internet to provide more information and entertainment than some nights of network TV.

That plus a good book and I can skip TV for 3-4 nights in a row.

We have a back log of movies to watch and I really think reading a book is a good thing to do for your brain and your imagination. I hope this strike lasts for a while.
