Pixar Short Films Collection Vol 1 courtesy Walt Disney Video
Pixar has produced some of the most entertaining animated movies, and now, thanks to "Pixar Short Films Collection Vol 1" we can own their earliest work on DVD and Blu-ray. I remember watching "Luxo Jr" and "Knick Knack" back in the late 80s. They appeared before movies, at least in Canada, and I remember watching them in awe. Not only were they pretty to look at, but the films told wonderful stories in such a short period of time.
This collection, which features 13 Pixar short films, is an extremely entertaining disc. I quickly watched the shorts films, some of which I hadn't seen before, and then moved on to the documentary "The Pixar Shorts: A Short History." The documentary includes interviews with many of the early pioneers at Pixar, and tells the story of how the company went from a small division of LucasFilm, to a hardware and software company that produced some short films, and finally to the company we know today, Pixar Animation Studios. It runs for just under 24 minutes, and it's packed with early footage and photos of the Pixar folks. There are also some Sesame Street shorts featuring the Luxo lamps, and each short film has a commentary track.
I watched this on Blu-ray, and the detail in the later shorts is simply amazing. I can see myself watching this many, many times (in fact, I've already watched a couple of them 5 or 6 times).
The disc includes: The Adventures of André and Wally B. Luxo, Jr. Red's Dream Tin Toy Knick Knack Geri's Game For the Birds Mike's New Car Boundin' Jack-Jack Attack One Man Band Mater and the Ghostlight Lifted
My favorite was "Boundin'" - I felt like bouncing around my condo after watching it.
