Pick of the Week: April 10, 2007

It's another week of slim pickings when it comes to quality TV-on-DVD releases (I can't wait until August/September when all the new, loaded sets come out). It's a bit odd, but the releases this week fall into three categories: old shows, animated shows and British shows. I selected one of the old shows as the "Pick of the Week": The Streets of San Francisco, Season 1, Volume 1. The acclaimed police drama starring Karl Malden and a very young Michael Douglas came out in 1972, and this four-disc set includes the pilot movie and the first 13 episodes from Season 1. (The box says 16, but the sticker on the front, which says 13, is correct.)

The set includes two bonus features, though they're both very short. The first is a 3:45-minute interview with Michael Douglas and Karl Malden, conducted by Army Archerd, and the second is an 8:44-minute pilot presentation.

Another noteworthy title next week is Scooby-Doo Where Are You! The Complete Third Season. These episodes are actually from Scooby's All-Stars, and all 16 episodes are on two discs, one of the discs being double-sided. The set includes a 20-minute feature called "Hanna Barbera: From H to B," which uncovers how the studio's artists and animators collaborate internally and connect with fans externally.

I was just posting about cartoons in my blog, and I find it kind of sad that I have to buy or rent the DVDs (like the Scooby Doo one) in order to see these old cartoons. They just don't play them like they used too.

I have a Fred Flinstone shirt that looks just like Fred's shirt, and only about half of the 80 kids I work with (grade K-5) knew who Fred Flinstone was. Very, very sad! Thank goodness for my old cartoon DVDs at least I have those to show them. I've already introduced them to He-Man and She-Ra with Secret of the Sword.

The Streets of San Francisco is one of those shows that I might buy, but I haven't seen the series since I was a kid (when it was originally on), so I'm reluctant after buying many sets from that era that, well, just didn't live up to my memory of the show. This is a case where some significant extras might have swayed my decision.

Gord -

Just wanted to say welcome to tvguide.com, you are definitely an asset to the team. I really like your new Commentary Track Blog. It is just as wonderful as your web site.

There are two things I check online every day - tvshowsondvd.com and tvguide.com.

I figure if there is any earth shattering news happening elsewhere in the world, someone will let me know. :)

Keep up the great work.

this is the guy ...

who will not add country fried videos to his ex-site,

one who refuses update contact us page,
with the fact search is disabled,

and then bans people for when he wrongly thinks people are being rude

and did not care to let people know when his cash cow amazon.com did not have the mash complete series available, that they could went to fye.com and got them ...

also does not talk out on how dvd collectors are being ripped off on dual-sided dvd's, by having buy 2 copies to have in our 400 dvd holders so we do not have flip (and what many have said, is bad flipping cause they get ruined faster)

PERHAPS this guy has a bias against country themed video shows AND PERHAPS he does not like people revealing his biases and shortcomings on correct mistakes AND PERHAPS he is a hot head who like most of todays youth think they know all.

note .. this is why i said PERHAPS .. was not making a direct accusation, but leaving it up to everyone to form their own opinions on the facts stated

Not a very coherent comment, and also doesn't lend much credibility when you join a site just to bash one of its contributors.

And just in response to some of your comments. It really isn't his job to tell you every place you can buy a DVD, or to comment on being "forced" to buy two copies of a DVD set to put in your player. This is a choice you make.

I've always found the site to be an informative place to find out about releases of TV shows on DVD. Isn't that what it is all about?
