DVD Pick of the Week: July 10, 1007

July 10th is a day many of you have been waiting for, not because there's a set you're dying to buy, but because it's a slow release day. That's right, July 10th is the slowest day you'll find for a very, very long time.

Beauty and the Beast, one of the top shows on TVShowsOnDVD.com, has its second season released, and this time there are extras! Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman provide video introductions on select episodes. It doesn't sound like much, but at least it's something.

We also see the third season release of Hustle, a BBC series about a group of con men (and woman). It's a great series, though the DVDs aren't as good as BBC's MI-5 (both shows are produced by Kudos). It's still one of my favorites, though the short seasons drive me crazy, but only because I like it so much.

My "pick of the week" award goes to another British series, Extras from HBO Home Video. Ricky Gervais isn't quite as brilliant as he was in The Office, but the show is delightfully funny, and the DVD set comes with some great extras. Look for the "Art of Corpsing" (a behind-the-scenes look at how the cast handles the most outrageous moments on the set), "Extras Backstage" (an hour-long feature that goes backstage with the cast), "Taping Nigel: The Gimpening" (a hilarious featurette that shows the "loving" relationship between Extras cast and crew), Outtakes and Bloopers. Sounds like a winner!

Also releasing July 10 - Bewitched season 5, My Sweet 16 seasons 1&2 (in one set), Home Run Derby volume 1, and 6 volumes of Punky Brewster.

So, are you saving money this week, or is there a set you have your eye on?

I'm saving money -- or, more likely, just spending it on other things! -- this week.

I would love to have Bewitched on DVD someday (but haven't gotten the first four seasons yet). And I would like to see Extras someday (I hear it's good).

However, the sets on my radar right now include Benson Season 1 (7/24), Dallas Season 7 (7/31), Dynasty Season 2 (yaaaaaaaaaaaay...uh, I mean 8/14), The Odd Couple Season 2 (8/28) and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Seasons 1 & 2 (9/4).

I have to confess, I also have a morbid curiosity about seeing Isis (7/24) again, but I don't know if it's enough to make me buy the set.

Can't wait to buy Extras! I just hope, though, that there's more than 6 episodes, cause this is the final season, right?

Funny thing...I saw Bewitched Season 5 on the store shelves this week, and I didn't even bat an eye. I knew I wouldn't have time to watch it anytime soon, so I didn't try to pick it up...

Not that I could have anyway...

I'm not certain whether I would have gotten out of the store with it, but I know a few years ago, I saw another TV-DVD set on the shelves a week early, and when I went to the checkout, it wouldn't scan...so they couldn't sell it to me. They realized it was put out too early, and they took it back. Kind of cool, eh? While it would have been nice to have it before everyone else, I'm impressed that they have a system in place that makes it fair for everyone. (This was at one of the big-box electronics store chains. I'm not sure whether the mom-and-pop shops have that kind of failsafe. Then again, are there even any mom-and-pop stores, anymore? Where WOULD a Quentin Tarantino of tomorrow work these days!?) ;)

Gord, that happened to me a couple of years ago, too.

I was in one of those warehouse stores that I won't name -- let's call it Spam's Tub -- and was surprised to see Dynasty Season 1 on the shelf a couple days early.

I thought maybe the release date had been moved up -- i.e., I didn't realize it was illegal goods! -- so I threw it in my cart.

Like in your case, the scanner caught the mistake, and they had to call security and pry the box from my hand. (OK, that last part isn't true.)

this week i picked up extras season 2 and my super sweet 16 season 1 and 2. My bought the my super sweet 16 set from target they have an exclusive special edition the includes the season 1 and 2 and the my super sweet 16 movie in one set. the special edition also has a bonus disc with an unaired epsiode. i think gord should report on special editions like this. I know these have been out for a while but i also picked up creture comforts season 1 and the west wing the complete series.

i think gord should report on special editions like this.

The thing is, I didn't know anything about it until I read your post. The studios do little side deals with certain retailers, and they don't let anyone else know about them. You have to be walking through the store and notice them, or flip through their flyer.

I think store exclusives are horrible ideas anyway. Sometimes the studio will purposely hold back material so they can put it on a disc for one retailer, and fans of the show miss out on something just because they bought it at store A instead of store B. Things have gotten so out of hand that there have been TWO different bonus discs for the same DVD set. Is a fan supposed to buy two copies of a $40 set just to get all the bonus material? It's insane! Plus there are bonuses in the US, and different bonuses in Canada (sometimes for the same chain - Best Buy). Where does it end?

gord i agree with you i think store exclusives are usuelly a bad idea too. like targets special edition of the oc season 4. it is 10$ more the regular edition for like 2 more minutes of bloobers. most of the time wehn there is store special edition or bonus disc. they are uasually sold out by the time i get there are they never get. this always happens with wal-mart, best buy, circuit city, and fye. the only place i have ever been able to get the bonus disc or special editon with out a fight is target. which is were i bought my super sweet 16 seasons 1 and 2.

I totally agree with "Beauty and the Beast"! I remember watching this show as a little kid (I was about 5 the first time it aired), and thought Vincent was the coolest thing ever! I do have a question Gord, I have a couple of questions about series and am unlucky in finding a contact link on TvShowsOnDVD. Help me, please!:P
