DVD Pick of the Week: May 22, 2007

Wow, May 22nd is a great day for TV-on-DVD, with plenty to choose for everyone. We have animated shows suitable for kids (Avatar Season 2, Volume 3; Legend of the Dragon Season 1; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 1, Volume 1; Stuart Little; Hero High), and an animated show NOT for kids (Afro Samurai). There are comedies (Kitchen Confidential: The Complete Series; Scrubs Season 5), dramas (The OC: Season 4; The Magnificent Seven Season 2; Roots), and even a sci-fi series (Kyle XY Season 1). Yup, May 22nd is a good day for TV-on-DVD (view the complete release schedule at TVShowsOnDVD.com).

My pick for this week is a show I've loved since I first saw it, Scrubs. This 3-disc set includes all 24 episodes from season 5 along with 3 commentary tracks - "My Big Bird" (Neil Flynn and Randall Winston), "My Way Home" (Zach Braff) and "My Lunch" (John C. McGinley and John Michel), "My Way Home" extended 100th episode, My 117 episodes: 5 seasons of Scrubs, Deleted Scenes and Alternate Lines. The DVD features great transfers, awesome audio, and entertaining extras.

The hidden gem this week is Kitchen Confidential, which isn't a reality TV cooking show as the title probably leads you to believe, but a failed Fox comedy set in a trendy New York restaurant. The cast is made up of actors I enjoyed on other shows; Bradley Cooper (Alias), Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), John Francis Daley (Freaks & Geeks), Bonnie Somerville (NYPD Blue) and John Cho (Off Centre). The show was canned after 4 episodes, so there are 9 unaired episodes on the DVD. It's a shame because it was very funny, and could have caught on with a better name, and timeslot. I like that Fox can take failed shows and turn them into decent DVD sets - this one has commentary tracks, and a couple of featurettes.

Do you guys have any favorites for May 22?

I'm looking forward to Kitchen Confidential. I only saw two of the episodes that aired and was surprised when I actually laughed at them. I forgot about this show until reading about the release on tvshowsondvd.com.

However, I'm more excited about The O.C. season 4. The extras don't sound that great, but due to work and school I missed a the first couple segments of most of the season 4 episodes. It'll be nice to have a complete collection of The O.C., and hopefully there'll be a "complete series" set in the future.

I want Kyle XY. I really liked that show last summer and am looking forward to the new season.

I also want Kitchen Confidential. But, if I remember correctly, it was up against How I Met Your Mother. X-( Which was weird. Both shows had actors from Freaks and Geeks and Buffy. But Mother won out for me because it also had Doogie Howser. I would like to see it though, because I have't seen John Francis Daily in anything else after Freaks and Geeks.

BTW-Freaks and Geeks is the best tv show EVER.

My picks for this week are Kyle XY season 1 and The O.C. season 4. Both are good shows.

I'm gonna wait for the complete series of the OC and buy them all at once, like I did with Friends and Buffy.

I will eventually pick up Scrubs, but I have really been looking forward to is Kitchen Confidental. I love the actors in this show but never got a chance to watch it (can't remember what was on at the same time), and was bummed that it was canceled, so I'm glad I can still see a few episodes. I'm also waiting for the complete set of The OC, or at least what extras are on it to see if its work it since I already have 2 seasons.

Oh and I have also been interested in Kyle XY, so its at the top of my netflix list already.

Hey Gord,

How about a suggestion. On Memorial Day, why not highlight some of the best Military Shows (Comedys and Dramas) that are on DVD.

For me Airwolf Season 3 is a very good thing to see but I am most looking forward to BCI's Filmation release of Hero High which was paired with the Animated versions of the Shazam Marvel Family, that is Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr. and while Warner owns that half of the block, they still make appearances in Hero High seen on this DVD. Hopefully Warner will see fit to release the Shazam half of the block.

glad to see there are some fellow Kyle XY fans in here! season one was awesome, I can't WAIT for season two to start on June 11. I really want to see what was going on with the person in the pod-like thing at the end of the season 1 finale...I think it's going to be like another kyle xy-type person. aaah so exciting!
