DVD Pick of the Week: May 1, 2007

Whoops! I was buried in other work yesterday and I forgot to do my weekly "Pick of the Week," so I apologize to anyone who came here looking for the story yesterday.

May 1 has a number of decent releases, but no single "Wow, this is going to be the #1 set" release, which makes my job a bit harder to do. I looked at the sets that people on TVShowsonDVD.com want, and there were two that stood out: the second season of Beverly Hills, 90210, and the third and fourth seasons of Dinosaurs. I'm going to go with Dinosaurs for next week; the set contains seven unaired episodes (out of the 36 in the set), a behind-the-scenes featurette, commentary tracks, a music video and more. Sounds like a winner to me. While 90210 will be a decent set, it'll also contain a lot of music substitutions.

Warner Bros. is also releasing the first season of What I Like About You, though it'll have a different theme song on the DVD set (check out the previous blog entry regarding theme songs); Fox has the second season of Girls Next Door featuring Hef's lovely girlfriends; there's the second season of Melrose Place from Paramount and the eighth season of King of Queens from Sony. You can view the entire release schedule at TVShowsonDVD.com.

Which set are you looking forward to for May 1?

None of those are must haves for me, but eventually, I'd like to buy 90210 and Dinosaurs.

I’m looking forward to the Dinosaurs set. What I love about this release, and the way Disney handled the release of Dinosaurs, is that now the whole entire series is now available (and in only two moderatly priced sets). In less than one year all 4 seasons of the show, and all the 65 episodes, are in my possession – uncut and unfooled around with. There were no games or gimmicks, no high prices or spreading them out over lots of smaller releases and they didn’t drag the series out over years of waiting – plus there wasn’t a discontinuation of the series that would leave fans hanging with an incomplete collection. Plus there is a nice collection of bonus features (both old and new material) on both sets. I wish Disney were as dedicated to doing this with other shows. I mean some shows get no bonus features (or nothing of any worth). Some (like the Muppet Show) take years between the next release (I mean its been 2 years since Season 1 of the Muppet Show was released. It sold well but still no sign of the final 4 seasons being released). And some get cut-off before the whole show is given a chance to be released (leaving those that bought the first sets with an unfinished collection). I love that this series got a proper treatment. It might not be the best television show of all time (although it is good and I like it) and it might not be the best DVD treatment of all time either, but it was a respectful and well-managed release that treated the fans and consumers right.

I'm looking forward to picking up Dinosaurs: Seasons 3 & 4, Will & Grace: Season 6, and Beverly Hills 90210: Season 2 & Melrose Place: Season 2 nicely shrink-wrapped together by Paramount in the Good, the Bad and the Beautiful Pack.

I've stopped purchasing the WILL & GRACE sets. As much as I love the show, Sony keeps issuing sets with edited episodes, so why pay for something that is broadcast in my area three times a day? I'm also shocked by the lack of special features. No one except Sony thinks clips from that season's episodes constitutes a special feature. I'm really surprised that the four stars of the show have not done any commentaries for the show. They all seemed to get along and were justifiably proud of their work on that ground-breaking show, but no one seems to have included them in any projects connectedt o the release of this show on DVD. And considering how slowly this show is being rolled out, you'd think there would be plenty of time for gathering them together for something.

Melrose Place and 90210 are givens for me -- I pre-ordered both as soon as they became available. I might Netflix the Dinosaurs set. I never really watched the show, though I remember it being funny (I was 11 I think when the series ended) -- I did somehow manage to watch the very last episode, and I remember that it totally depressed me, but was oddly moving too (I think Baby said something like, "what's going to happen to us" right before a tracking shot pulled away from the house and showed the impending ice age...that's macabre for "family show"), so I'd kind of like to see it again. Most shows that I only saw once 13 years earlier don't stick with me - but oddly that finale did...so I'll add it to my rental queue.

Really though, I'm all about Melrose and 90210 - the second season was when both shows met their stride. 90210's summer episodes transformed the series into an iconic hit and the second season of Melrose gave up all pretense of being a post-college coming of age story and went full on crazy. I mean, come on, Kimberley "dies" - comes back from the dead, all deranged and scarred, Sydney and Jane fight in the pool for the wedding dress, Sydney becomes Heidi Fleiss-lite, Amanda is total uber-bitch and beds Jake, Michael officially converts to pure evil...I could go on and on.

vitorusso,

It's actually Lionsgate that does Will & Grace, and I'm not sure they're to blame for the DVDs. I think (but I could be wrong), they just distribute the finished goods that NBC produces.

Dinosaurs is a must, the show holds up very well.

Jason King looks interesting as an inspiration for Austin Powers but it would be a total blind buy.

I am uncertain if I would buy What I like About You right away but I do think that show was a bit better than its contemporaries. Amanda Bynes seems to be a talented young comedienne with great physicality and timing. I think she may have studied some older series and film. She is an oddity amongst her generation and I hope she finds better movie material than she has experienced in the past.

|sf>Gelflingwaldo,

I agree completely with your posting for both the Dinosaurs pick and your insight when it comes to some other Disney set releases.

I suspect that Disney's DVD mindset might have to do with how short a series that Dinosaurs was. Many of the shows that Disney chooses for DVD were multi-season, so Disney wants to dish the episodes out in small bites. I agree with you that it's nice to see a compact, complete release from them. (Too bad the same can't be said for some of the shows from Disney Afternoon. For example, we will probably never see the remainder from "Gargoyles.")
