Cheers: Kristy Lee Cook Sizzles on Idol
Kristy Lee Cook by Frank Micelotta/Fox
Cheers to Kristy Lee Cook for proving me right. Despite the fact that she's been in the bottom three more than once and been derided as the worst on a website that shall remain nameless, I've defended American Idol's countrified cutie. (Don't believe me? Check out the latest C&J vodcast.) If you can get past her bland blond looks and just listen to her, you'll hear she's actually got a good voice — and it was particularly well-suited to Dolly Parton's "Coat of Many Colors," which she sang beautifully. Never mind what Simon says: David isn't the only Cook who's heating up Idol.

Um, no. She's not heating anything up. I supported her at the beginning because I thought she had a decent voice. But she hasn't expanded on it, she hasn't done anything great with it. She's very pretty. But she has no identity. As soon as the judges told her she could do some county, she immediately shifted into that mode. It wasn't a natural change for her, IMNSHO.
She was bland last night. She is very pretty tho. She's just not at the same level vocally or with her arrangements.

"Bland blond[e] looks"? Would it make a difference if she were a redhead? Why not mention her eye color, her height or her weight?
She's a bland soprano, too.

Sorry, Bruce, but I had to click DISAGREE. I'm as susceptible to a pretty blonde as anyone else, but KLC continues to underdeliver, every single week.
I have to wonder why she (or Brooke, for that matter) didn't choose the path of lesser resistance and breeze through Nashville Star instead of competing against actual pop star wannabes with degrees of dynamism.

I've been a Kristi fan since the beginning. I think she was set back by Simon's harsh criticisms, who wouldn't be? But with her bold performance of God Bless the USA, and the resulting praise, plus the endorsement of Lee Greenwood, I think she is now singing with more confidence. I don't know if she'll make the final four [probably not by the comments I've read from viewers] but I think if someone like Greenwood would help out, she can have a great country singing career.

She shouldn't be there. She shouldn't have even made the top 12.
I have to wonder why she (or Brooke, for that matter)
Does that mean you're not a brooke fan matt? I can't figure out why people like her. She's so boring and to me, seems fake. I've been around a few people with her type personality and they were all fake.

I don't think she is that good.. IMO she is only here this week because she sang God Bless the USA.
She did do much better last night, I will admit, but overall she (and Ramiele) have been underperforming since day 1.

if she got a good voice coach, she could be a successful country star. Her personality reminds me of Carrie Underwood - quiet, demure, not flashy - and look where Carrie is now.
Kristy Lee doesn't have Carrie's powerful voice, hence the need for a coach.

I think Kristy Lee's voice is not as good (or as consistent) as Carrie's, but it seems much better than Kellie Pickler's voice.
The big difference for me in favor of Kellie over Kristy Lee is that Kellie has a wonderful, bubbly personality that comes out in interviews and on stage. Earlier in the season Kristy Lee seemed too subdued, although maybe she can do better now. Also, I wonder if her eyes are especially sensitive to light. She tends to squint or closer her eyes on stage, which can make it tougher for the audience to make a connection.
I did like her little sass with Simon after her performance. I felt it was cute and bubbly, delivered with a friendly smile, that made her a little more attractive than most people (who come across as arrogant and immature) who choose to fire back at Simon.
I do not see Kristy Lee making it into the top 3 or 4, but I could see her making it another week or two.

Sorry - totally disagree. That chop job the arrangers did (not her fault) to COMC didn't do anyone any favors, but KLC is still bland and riding the country thing with a total lack of authenticity simply to secure votes. She's not even as legitimately country as Shania Twain.

What do you mean she's not legitimately country? She rides horses!

==>Took the words out of my head! Couldn't have put it better!

==>My thoughts EXACTLY. The second Simon suggested country was her "niche" she had to go COUNTRIFY EVERY SINGLE SONG thereafter.
indy500"I don't think she is that good.. IMO she is only here this week because she sang God Bless the USA."
==>Yep. And please, EVERYONE can sing that song, even ME, and I'm tone deaf for the most part. I've said this in the AI blog, and it bears repeating here, but KLC got cleared through to Hollywood by singing Amazing Grace. When in Hollywood, she didn't make the first cut, and wasn't doing so well; so when she got her second chance, what did she sing? Any pop songs? No. She went with what got her to Hollywood, and Amazing Grace shot her into the top 24.
That song was PURE manipulation, and I for one, didn't fall for it. She's just NOT THAT GOOD. I hope she leaves tonight.

I've only voted for Kristy this week and last. I for one agree with you, Bruce. I think she is improving and deserves to stay on the show a little longer to see if she will continue to improve. Now, if she goes back to being really bad next week, I won't vote for her!

By the way, manipulation or not, she did an awesome job on "God Bless the USA." So what if it was manipulation, I say that was a smart move on her part!
