Cheers: Everything Old Is New Again
Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Wanda Sykes by Mitchell Haddad/Warner Bros.
Cheers to Julia Louis-Dreyfus for surrounding herself with a Seinfeld-worthy ensemble on The New Adventures of Old Christine. Her CBS sitcom was designed as a star vehicle, and she's won most of the attention, as well as a richly deserved Emmy, for it. But the ex-Elaine Benes is smart enough to share the laughs with a talented cast, including Hamish Linklater (as her slacker brother), Wanda Sykes (as her sassy pal), Clark Gregg (as her deadpan ex-husband) and Emily Rutherfurd (as his befuddled girlfriend). With so many reliably funny players, Old Christine's the rare new sitcom that doesn't make you want to — as Elaine might have put it — get out!

I was reading this when an idea for a Cheer came to me on my television. Craig Ferguson was in the process of showing a clip of his naturalization, taking the Oath of Allegiance and becoming an American citizen. I think ever since I've watched him he's been very passionate about becoming an American and taking everything to heart that so many people take for granted. It can't be a normal state of affairs for a late night host to do something like this and for it to be so heartfelt was moving. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy and with all the crap we're forced to wade through on television right now with the strike, feeling awful about shows like Moment of Truth and what they say about our society, I say Craig's experience says something pretty great. Glad to have him.

scoobysnacks, I fell asleep before Craig came on, but fortunately, I was recording it, so I now look forward to seeing it even more, after your heartfelt comments.
As a Canadian who loves America--in spite of what its leaders have done in recent years--I am delighted to see such pride in being American. It's the way things used to be. Hopefully, once President Obama takes the oath of office, it will become the norm, once again.
As for Old Christine, while the feeble attempt at romance made me wince throughout the episode, I can't agree more with the comments about this stellar ensemble. The brother-sister dynamic was particularly hilarious this week, with Christine utterly oblivious to everything Matthew was saying. It's so true! (Gad, I hope my sister does/doesn't read this!)

I liked the romantic subplot in last night's episode, although comedy isn't Blair Underwood's forte. He's better on In Treatment and Dirty Sexy Money.

Bruce, maybe the wince-worthiness of the romantic subplot says more about my own romantic bumblings than it does about this week's show!
I think Blair Underwood does a good job on Old Christine (gee, that sounds dirtier than I had planned...), and I hope they stay together. I guess you're right about him not being the greatest at comedy, but all he really needs to do is stand around and let Christine's ex and those pathetic mothers react to his mere presence! Comedy gold!

Wanda Sykes' Barb and Hamish Linklater's Matthew are my favorite characters on the show. As for the romance between Blair Underwood's Mr. Harris and Christine, I'm afraid it's a Jump the Shark storyline for me. Mr. Harris is majorly hot and charismatic and Christine is a decidedly unhot not-very-compelling ditz. What does he see in her?
By the way, I'm really enjoying Underwood's performance on In Treatment.

I've gotta disagree about Christine being an unhot not-very-compelling ditz. JLD is, was and always will be hot, and Christine's adorably nuts.

You beat me to the chest-shove, Bruce! On this, you and I are in complete agreement!

Maybe you have to be a guy to see what's so hot about her. Or maybe I'm just jealous that she's getting to make out with Blair Underwood and I'm not.

That's okay, Marci. I never saw what some women saw in dullards (to me) such as Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner and Jack Nicholson!
