Jeers: Cashmere Mafia's Not-So-Hot Somerville

080116cheers-somerville.jpg
Bonnie Somerville by Andrew Eccles/ABC
Jeers to Bonnie Somerville for being the weak link in ABC's new Cashmere Mafia. Lucy Liu's got star power, and foreign imports Frances O'Connor and Mirando Otto can actually, you know, act. With her steamroller line readings and lack of charisma, bland bombshell Somerville (who's never made much of an impression, despite roles on Friends and NYPD Blue) can't even make her same-sex subplot interesting. She's the Fredo of this Mafia.

The first time I noticed Bonnie Somerville was when she was on Grosse Pointe. And, even then, she was the weak link in the cast. Had you told me then that she'd go on to be the most successful of that group I would never have believed you. Cashmere Mafia is also the third Darren Star show she's been in. If it weren't for the fact that Star is openly gay, I'd assume she was sleeping with him. Because I can't understand what he sees in her.

Sadly, I agree.

Truth is that CM is a fun show and if critics would STOP comparing it to S&tC, it would stand a better chance. Not every show has to have SUBSTANCE. It is just aa FUN silly show. I see this more as "BIG SHOTS" for women than a S&tC remake.

But as to Somerville - how ANYONE can have a romantic scene opposite Lourdes Benedicto and NOT have chemistry is completely beyond me!

I have to agree. Lourdes Benedicto has always been a solid supporting actor back when she was on Titans with Victoria Principal (yes I do remember that show!!) and she has had good work on 24 and The Nine. I am always glad to see Lourdes doing well. Maybe she should knock Miss Sommerville off and become a member of the Mafia?

I HONESTLY CAN SAY I HAVE NO QUALMS WITH WOMEN OR MEN BEING GAY...BUT!!! WHY THE HELL DO WE HAVE TO WATCH 2 WOMEN EAT FACE FOR WHAT SEEMED LIKE FOREVER WHEN THAT SHOULD BE DONE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS???..THAT GOES FOR MEN AND WOMEN EATING FACE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY DOWNTOWN AREA OR 2 MEN DOING THE SAME THING..MORALS ARE HISTORY FOLKS..GET USED TO IT OR YOU WON'T HAVE A TV PROGRAM TO WATCH, PERIOD !!!..THOSE TWO KISSING WAS FUNNY AS CRAP TO ME....AND I THINK IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY ??...DUH...I REALLY LIKE THE SHOW BUT THAT MADE ME SICK

Okay SPBIRD...I can't help but respond to your rant. First...why are you SHOUTING? Do you think we can't read? Try using the shift key, would you?

And I think your homophobia is showing...even in ALL CAPS. The kiss between two women bothered you? Why is that? You think it should stay behind closed doors. You see, the issue is NOT what goes on behind closed doors, but it's about everyone having the right (and the respect) to be who they are...in the open and in public.

No one thinks anything about a guy and girl kissing on the street corner, but if my partner and I were to hold hands in public, chances are we'd be physically harmed. What's right about that, in your narrow world?

Yes, I agree that making out in public is tacky...but it seems to only be an issue with folks (like you) when it's same-sex couples. Sorry, but we have feelings, too. We love who we love...and we should be allowed to express that...publically. Just like you and your significant other are allowed to do.

I love CM and I have to agree with your assessment. I kept wishing Lourdes Benedicto and Somerville would switch roles. I like Somerville but it seems like she should be the supporting role and Lourdes Benedicto be the main role and a member of the Cashmere Mafia crew. IMHO.

Maybe if she wasn't so Botoxed we could actually see a facial expression.

I think Cashmere Mafia is great! I actually disagree. I think Bonnie Somerville is great on the show. I have been a fan of hers for years. I love this cast!

Do most of you just dislike Ms. Somerville personally or do you actually know what acting is all about. What is she doing or not doing to make the role interesting. I don't think she wrote her own scenes and I think there is a director there that guides the acting and substance in the scenes that all of the actors do. If you have a problem with any acting on any show maybe you should think about how the director is guiding the acting in the scenes and how it is written for that character.

Think about it.............

I don't think any of us knows Ms. Somerville personally (I certainly don't). And the other actors on the show seem to do just fine working with the same writers and directors, so I'd say Somerville's lackluster performance is her own fault. But that's just me...

I just think she looks as bored as the millions of viewers who have stopped watching since the premiere.

I agree Buffy Freak. I'll give it one more try, but if it doesn't get better, I think I might have to stop watching. As for Bonnie Somerville being the weak link, I think she's OK acting the part she's been given.
