Jeers: Jay Shows No Love for Justin

080611cheers-leno.jpg
Jay Leno by Kevin Foley/NBC
Jeers to Jay Leno for botching an interview with Justin Timberlake. The Tonight Show unfunnyman spent the bulk of the first segment with the Love Guru costar discussing... golf? Even worse, Leno told a very long, very old golf joke, while Timberlake sat quietly. The monologue's over, Jay — time to let the guest talk. Then Leno opened the second segment by noting he'd met Timberlake's girlfriend Jessica Biel when she was a teenager during one of his "Jay Walking" bits... then didn't show the video! I know Leno's short-timing it at NBC, but is he even trying anymore?

Totally agree. Justin is a funny boy, and the parts where he did get to talk were great, but Jay did a terrible interview. I didnt mind the golf talk, but the joke was dumb, and then not showing the Jessica Beil tape was super lame. Why mention it then? The questions from the audience clearly made Justin uncomfortable, and if HE can't think of anything funny to say, you know there's a serious flaw. I also thought it was uncool of Jay to make Justin admit his crush on Karen Allen. A better host might have been able to draw that out in a smoother, less awkward way.

Jay's ratings may be better than Daves but Dave is who I watch. Even if Dave doesn't like a guest -- he still INTERVIEWS them. He might poke fun at them (Paris H comes to mind) but at least he lets them talk. Hello Leno, the title of your job is Talk Show HOST.Not talk show HOG. Try to keep it together before you head off to cable purgatory at the end of the run at NBC?

To me, this is just another example of Leno's complete lack of professionalism. Even when he does interviews, it's glaringly obvious that he has never watched the TV show, seen the film, read the book, or listened to the music the guest is known for. Were I being paid millions of dollars, I think I could take a little time to actually familiarize myself with my guests' histories before I plunked my big butt down in the host chair.

Letterman is no better. His fault is that he seems to actually think he's hilarious. Dave, you are not in any way, shape, form, or fashion funny. Nothing is more annoying than the person who thinks he's more entertaining than he is.

I cannot wait until Conan takes over The Tonight Show. He's funny, sincere, and creative. Plus, with him there, I won't have to channel flip between him (my imaginary late-night tv husband and Craig, my imaginary late-night tv boyfriend).

I too agree with everyone here. Justin did a great interview on Ellen recently and both times he hosted SNL, he was hilarious.

I've never been a huge fan of Leno's, and I'll be skipping the show altogether when O'Brien takes over next year. I wait up for Craig Ferguson. He's an intelligent and funny guy. (But one of these days, Angela Lansbury is going to show up and kick his Scottish-American @rse--tehee. For those of you who don't watch him, Craig pokes fun at Paul McCartney by showing a photo of Lansbury.)

Yes they could have talked about talented artists like Madonna and what it was like working with someone who can sing and is not a puppet.

My opinion of Jay is addressed in my moct recent blog. He is one of the most incompetent talk show hosts in memory.

Craig pokes fun at Paul McCartney by showing a photo of Angela Lansbury? Now there's some topical humor.

I'm not ashamed to say that I've always been a big Jay Leno fan, so the undeserved but constant stream of hate for him for so many years has always ticked me off!

I simply enjoy his comedy and his easygoing manner--although I am sorry to see how his show has become an instrument of agents, managers, and p.r. people shoving actors and singers onto the "Tonight Show" couch pretty much just to tout their latest projects. And I wish Jay had the confidence to be more spontaneous and avoid the obvious set-up questions for their pre-arranged chitchats. But if he hasn't been the greatest talk show host, he is still a sharp and funny stand-up comedian.

And I've always preferred him to the infinitely obnoxious Letterman, whose tired, ironic smiles at the camera and nervous tics while sitting at his desk drive me crazy. He also seems more interested in humiliating his guests than having sincere conversations with them. He's a hopeless jerk. ANd don't get me started about his sniveling, ventriloquist dummy of a band leader, Paul Shaeffer. Blech!

I'll be sorry to see Jay leave the "Tonight Show" next year, even though I seem to be in the minority.

It's pretty sad when the funniest thing that happened that night was when the 2 Detroit Red Wings tried to sing a version of Timberlake's Sexy Back song as "Bringing Stanely Back" as in the Stanley Cup. They were good sports about it, but looked pained and stiff. Which of course is comedy gold.

I'd tell you if I agreed with that assessment...except I watched Letterman instead that night. I saw that JT show as a snoozefest before it even started. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to pout about how the CBS affiliate losing its signal screwed me out of Craig Ferguson with Stockard Channing. Seriously, total throwback to 5 yrs old when the color bars and high pitched squeal signaled no cartoons on yet.

Whennow you're kidding right?!! My Spice girl DOLLS have a million times more talent than Madoneah and that's when they are just standing there. And I agree not only does Leno suck and is verrry insufferable but he's a BIG-TIME RACIST to boot!! He only makes negative 'jokes' about black celebrities and his holier thaness makes me ill instead of waiting for this loser to quit just fire his sorry a##.
