Cheers: Housewives Back in Style

080414cheers-desperate.jpg
Teri Hatcher , Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria Parker and Felicity Huffman by Danny Feld/ABC
Cheers to Desperate Housewives for returning after the strike with its most shocking twist yet: a subtle episode. The ABC soap continued its creative comeback, dealing with the aftermath of the twister that decimated Wisteria Lane. Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chavira) is still blind — and back with Gaby (Eva Longoria Parker), where he belongs. Lynette (Felicity Huffman) is going through a spiritual crisis after surviving cancer and the storm. And we're learning more about the past of Katherine Mayfair (Dana Delany, the show's best addition ever), who may or may not have killed her first husband (Gary Cole — yay!) but who definitely slept with Susan's much younger cousin/accountant (O.C. alum Chris Carmack). That's cougar-rific!

I didnt care for the episode that much.
The whole Lynette and Bree Faith and church storyline was dumb. I dont need another show shoving religion down my throat.
Susans storyline was, as usual, unwatchable.
Good to see Chris Carmack on TV again.

I thought it was pretty clear that Katherine had killed her first husband (not "may or may not have"). Adam (or whatever her current husband's name is) lied to her daughter when he said Katherine didn't kill her father.

Bruce...buddy...I gotta totally disagree with you on this one. It was an awful episode, with exception to the Bree/Lynette church thing which (sorry Cooper) I actually liked even though I'm not at all religious. This show needs to be put out of its misery though. The stuff between Gaby and Carlos was just as unwatchable as the Susan stuff. I'm starting to think this show would be a lot better if it just followed Lynette and Bree.

I dont need another show shoving religion down my throat.
???????-That episode was hardly pro religion!!

The biggest "twist" was Gaby seemingly going against the grain of her usual shallowness (if ever so slightly!)

A big Jeer to the implication that the Detroit Pistons have no defense.
Who woulda thunk that the Desperate Housewives writers pool would not have included a single sports fan??!!!;)

The episode was an insipid disappointment. Did the producers think we would be so thrilled it was back on the air that we would accept an episode with no drama and little comedy and cheer for it?

*sheesh*

The Lynette / Bree storyline MIGHT have been interesting to watch if we had seen Lynette struggle with her faith (or lack of it) for even FIVE MINUTES before rushing off to church with Bree. What could have been a thought-provoking, touching story was not much more than a farce.

Hope this is not an example of what the rest of the season is to bring. If so, I'll make room on my TiVo for something else.

: ) P

I can't believe what I'm reading in the comments. I thought it was a very funny and compelling episode! I laughed a number of times. My only complaint is that it's time for Susan to tone down the slapstickiness (long past time, actually), but I'm with you all the way, Bruce! I thought DH was BACK last night! :)

Thanks, Gord! I'm glad someone agrees with me. I mean, in addition to 83% of voters...

I agree 100% i thought it was funny and included alot of drama(what do people want someone to die in the 1st episode back)
lynette/bree story was dramatic but funny at the same time
katherine's mystery just got deeper and interesting//what a twist her sleeping with susans younger cousin
Gabi and carlos was touching with gabi standing by her men but feeding him dogfood lol
NOT THE BEST BUT DEFINETLY DESERVES A CHEER!!!!!!!!

I completely agree as well, it was a fantastic episode, highly enjoyable. I'm glad the show is back, and I'm a little glad they didn't come back with a HUGE episode.

Also, Cooper is being ridiculous, just because a show has religious characters, does not by any means suggest the show is trying to shove religion down your throat. Sheesh.

I enjoyed the episode. I thought it was funny and well done, and Gabrielle had great lines, which is what I'm always looking for. While the writer's strike sucked for TV viewers during the months off, it apparently did wonders for the writers - all the returning shows are on FIRE! At least the ones I'm watching (I'm talking to you Thursday night comedy on NBC!)

And, if you all remember, my only disappointment with the finale before the forced hiatus was the departure of Nathan Fillion. So thank you TV Gods for his return. Though I'm pretty sure last night was it for him. Darn it. Someone hire him, please!!!

Am I the ony one who thinks it is creepy that Marc Cherry has now told the story of an older woman seducing and underage boy twice with no punishment? Gaby with gardner John and now Katherine with Susan's cousin, Tim. What message is being sent? I can't help but think if older male characters were sleeping with teenage girls there would be an outcry. It is statutory rape.

Other than the Bree/Lynette story I found the episode to be lackluster.

I don't think Tim is supposed to be "underage." And what "punishment" would you suggest?

Bruce:

Did you not watch the same show that I watched? Tim was 16 when he first slept with Katharine. He told Susan he lost his virginity to her. 16 is definitely underage in the U.S. Last time I checked sex with a minor was illegal and DH has depicted it twice with no consequences.

DH has depicted it twice with no consequences.

Hmmm, just like real life.
