Cheers: Miss Guided's Comic Missile

Chris Parnell in Miss Guided by Mitch Haddad/ABC
Cheers to Chris Parnell for his scene-stealing turn in Miss Guided. As power-drunk vice principal Bruce Terry, the Saturday Night Live alum wrings consistent laughs from the freshman ABC sitcom's uneven scripts: His character's man-crush on soulful substitute teacher Beaux (Ashton Kutcher) was downright hysterical. (Parnell's also brilliant as a juice-sipping poker genius in the just-released big-screen comedy The Grand.) I just hope this new TV gig doesn't mean we've seen the last of Parnell's delirious 30 Rock quack, Dr. Leo Spaceman.

Chris Parnell and Judy Greer are the only things good about Miss/Guided. The setting (does there have to be a token problem-kid every episode? It worked to cameo Jamie-Lynn Spears, but now it's repetitive), the other characters (aarg, Tim and Lisa), the other actors (Brooke Burns, really? Not even clevage...not even clevage), and the writing itself (they had to spoof Perez Hilton? Really. That's low, even for ABC sitcoms).

The show seems to revolve too much around "opposite" humor (i.e. one character says something, then does the exact opposite). It's getting repetitive and predictable.

Then again, I loved Big Day, which everyone seemed to hate, so I dunno.

What I do like about the show, however, are the soliloquys (the monologues, for the non-Shakespeare inclined). It provides an interesting dynamic.

*sigh* ABC's going to cancel this aren't they? How depressing.

I don't understand ABC's thinking in scheduling this show. They debut it after Dancing With the Stars (albeit at 10:32 pm) and get decent sampling, then burn off the rest of the episodes two at a time on Thursdays at 8 with no lead-in. Are they behind this show or not? The strategy seems...misguided (sorry).

Are they behind this show or not?

They did the exact same thing with Big Day. (i.e. show 2 episodes back-to-back at off hours). It must be a ratings strategy.

My guess is that they are suffering.

well, it would have been a lead in for Lost, which is a totally diffrent type of show but would still probably create a large viewing audience.

I've only seen 1 episode (last night), but I like it.

I usually just lurk but I felt the need to defend this show and its so-called "uneven" scripts. I have yet to watch an episode that I haven't liked. It's quickly made its way into my top 5 favorite shows of the season and I look forward to every episode. Hopefully it doesn't get canceled but I'm prepared for the worst.

I missed the first show and tried to watch the second but turned it off before it was finished. I usually give a show more time than that but it just left me completely cold. Did it get better? Is it really worth another look? The characters were all a little cartoonish to me. I didn't care about any of them. I have to care about at least one character to enjoy a show. That's why I never liked Seinfeld or Raymond. While I'd laugh occasionally, I just didn't like any of the characters.

Cindy--You didn't like the characters on Raymond? But everybody loves Raymond! :^O

I love Chris Parnell!!
I think his talents were overlooked on SNL. His dead-on off-beat "everyman" caricatures were a little more subtle and understated than some of his over-the-top counterparts-more suited for sitcoms or supporting roles on the big screen, IMO.:)

Cindy, I also missed the first episode and started with the second. I didn't think it was all that great. I laughed a couple times, but I gave the third episode a chance and loved it. It has some problems, and I agree with most of the people that Judy Greer and Chris Parnell were the only standouts in the cast, but Parnell was worth the viewings alone. I'd give it another chance if you just feel like laughing. Hopefully ABC will give it another chance and they can work on the supporting cast a little bit.

I think this show is uneven, but the stuff that works really works well, so I am rooting for it. And Chris Parnell is the single best thing about it -- he's stealing the show and is HILARIOUS in every scene. (But I also hope he gets to come back and be Dr. Spaceman!)

I agree Bruce, ABC's "support" for the show is exactly what has me worried. While I do enjoy watching 2 episodes back to back, I'll be happy with just 1 if it's going to help the show get another season.

If DWTS wasn't so long, then they could air Miss Guided and Samantha Who together in the 9 block.

Hey Cindy Oh Cindy....(was an old song) please make an appointment ASAP to see a therapist. How could you not one single solitary character in "Raymond"?? The show was so funny in a family way and very popular. Where does it hurt? Tell the doctor....Please. I hope you get better soon. I also enjoy Miss Guided even if it's a little misguided. It has very clever moments. It's worth another chance.
