Cheers: Dexter's Killer Finale

Jaime Murray and Michael C. Hall by Randy Tepper/Showtime
Cheers to Dexter for finishing its second season with a flourish. Michael C. Hall's "Bay Harbor Butcher" lived to slay another day after his crazy ex-lover Lila murdered his pursuer Sgt. Doakes — making it morally justifiable for Dex to off her. (I love a happy ending.) The skillfully executed episode capped a stellar year for Showtime, which just saw the Golden Globes recognize several of its series (although, sadly, not its best, Brotherhood). Want proof Showtime is the new HBO? Dexter's finale was funnier and more entertaining than Ricky Gervais' bloated, dispiriting Extras swan song, which aired opposite it on HBO. In short: Dexter kills.

My only gripe about the episode was that I didn't get to plunge the knife into Lila! It's just amazing that the writers are able to get us to root for a serial killer over a woman (albeit a really annoying one in Lila) and a detective (so glad Doakes is gone!).

I cannot get enough of this show. Cannot wait for the third season either, and this one to come out on DVD so I can watch it all again. This show is masterful in every single way, and I am so glad I decided to check it out one day. Kudos to everyone involved, and what a great finale!

I was REALLY sad to see Doakes go. I think the dynamic between him and Dexter was exciting. But I realized that they didn't have much of a choice there. They were a bit painted into a corner. I just hope they bring someone else on that can be a rival like Doakes was!

It's only a shame that Doakes had to die just when Erik King was finally playing him with something resembling subtlety.

Congrats to Michael C. Hall on his golden globe nom. Too bad the series wasn't honored as well.

WOW! I got goose bumps when I saw Lila walking in Paris. I knew Dexter was there and going to off her. (I thought I'd never say that!) Anyway, so glad it was Lila that killed Doakes so Dex would have an excuse to get rid of her. Excellent storytelling with twist after twist. Such excitement - be still my heart.

I suppose this is the end of Deb and Frank. I really liked them together. I know some people didn't, but it was a mutually satisfying relationship for them both.

Can't wait til 2008!
