Cheers: Dana Delany Gets Desperate

071015desperatehousewives.jpg
Dana Delany and Marcia Cross in Desperate Housewives by Ron Tom/ABC
Cheers to Dana Delany for cooking up fresh trouble on Desperate Housewives. The China Beach Emmy winner's recent arrival on Wisteria Lane has taken the ABC serial back to its catfighting roots. Her mysterious character, Katherine Mayfair, has already clashed with Bree (Marcia Cross) about pie recipes and Gaby (Eva Longoria) about her flirtatious ways. Good thing Delany has signed up for more seasons — we're hungry for extra helpings.

I like this new addition to Wisteria Lane. There's going to be a lot more shake-ups for all of our favorite housewives because of it, and I'll enjoy seeing where it all leads. Especially when it comes to Delaney's "past" and ex husband. Adds still another element to one of my favorite guilty pleasures.

I like her so far especially watching her put a few cracks in Bree's seemingly perfect veneer.I think making Dana's character a former Wisteria Lane resident was a good idea and that her daughter and Julie used to be friends and Julie is trying to help the daughter remember her past.

I'm looking forward to the new couple arriving next being a fan of Tuc Watkins from his days on OLTL.

Seeing the way Dana's character has been introduced so well does make me sad when I think of how DH botched the Applewhite storyline and wasted the talented Alfre Woodward. The Applewhites were so isolated "segregated" if you will from the rest of the neighborhood for most of the season not to mention the storyline didn't receive very much airtime. When it seemed as if Betty might become part of the group by blackmailing Bree into allowing her into the ladies card game unfortunately it didn't materialize into more "integration" of the Applewhites beyond the Applewhite son being involved with Bree's daughter which ended in his death and Betty and her other son leaving town.

I think the show is doing whatever it can to save itself; there is definitely a feeling of "running out of steam" on Wisteria Lane. Think the two new neighbors will be great; it's about time someone with spunk and personality invade "Desperation Lane".

Lynette's story keeps the nonsense "real" and makes the show watchable for me. I have never liked Edie nor Susan - I wish they'd move out. Bree is getting a bit rusty -- only Lynette seems to have life in her.

Oh well, everything has to come to an end. I see DH as approaching that time.

We didn't HATE you after the Office jeer, but apparently a lot of us didn't agree with you!

This is my problem with this "cheer":

The China Beach Emmy winner's recent arrival on Wisteria Lane has taken the ABC serial back to its catfighting roots.

Is Mr. Fretts talking about an alternate universe version of Desperate Housewives or some rare DVD director's cut that escaped a US release?

DH was never about "catfighting." The show's roots are based around the deep friendships of four very different women (eeek! that sounds like The View!). Even when Bree was at her snarky, sarcastic worst, she was never outright enemies with her friends. And the extended neighborhood rivalries did not pick up steam until well into the latter half of the first season.

Saying that DH has "catfighting roots" is about as nonsensical as when folk make comments about the probability of dead characters on 24 actually being alive because "you never know with this show," as if they've never seen an episode before.

I wouldn't say the show had "catfighting roots," but there was quite a bit of animosity between Susan & Edie, especially when both of them were after Mike.

I'm very interested in finding out just exactly what is going on with the Mayfairs.

I think the initial appeal of Housewives had more to do with catfighting than the "deep friendships" of four women. But correct me if I'm wrong...

I can only speak for myself but I like the friendships. But, adding Delany's character spices things up a bit. If anything, her mystery, perfectionism, rivalry with Bree, etc., brings the other
women closer. I like that.

I think you're right. I think the appeal is in the differences in personality, not the similarities. It isn't that the friendships weren't important - it's that the friendships were important in spite of everything else. I love Dana Delany. I don't watch this show until football is over and then I play catch up. So, I'll be looking forward to it.

I was always more drawn to their catty moments than I was to their deep moments...
