Cheers: Criminal Minds' Above-Average Joe

Shemar Moore, Thomas Gibson and Joe Mantegna in Criminal Minds by Vivian Zink/ABC Studios
Cheers to Criminal Minds for adding Joe Mantegna to the cast without missing a beat. The veteran character actor fits right in on CBS' hit drama as Special Agent David Rossi, the mysteriously out-of-retirement founder of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit. With his warm-'n'-fuzzy recent roles in Joan of Arcadia and The Starter Wife, it's easy to forget Mantegna first made his name in the dark, crime-ridden world of David Mamet, so Criminal's twisted plotlines are nothing new to him. Mandy Who?

Yuck. I didn't like him one bit; I found him to be creepy and contrived. Really? There's some secret about the charm bracelet and the people he's having Garcia check out? Really? The whole thing with writing in his notebook isn't ideas for how to figure out that particular case?

I think BAU could have gone on without him. I only recently began watching Criminal Minds and enjoyed the show. I think I'm still pissed that Mategna was cast as Spenser, thus ruining all the fantastic work done by Robert Urich.

Ugh. That's all I can say. I just wish the powers that be would've given this show a chance to run without trying to fill Mandy Patinkin's spot.

See you Mandy, you traitor. Long live the new man on the block.

I liked Joe and his new character. Can't wait to learn more about this mystery case he's working on. He's obviously got some unfinished business.

I wondered why he wasn't sharing with the team; his explanation on how things were done when he founded the BAU helped me understand him a bit more.

Too bad Criminal Minds doesn't have a TV Show Blog. (hint, hint) ;)

A romance with whom? I didn't see any seeds.

If you're talking about between me and him, yeah. Oh yeah, I can see that!:8}

Yes, I miss Mandy too, BUT if he didn't want to be there---so what, the show is still great without him!! It's his loss. I loved Joe Mantegna on Joan of Arcadia and he'll do just fine on Criminal Minds, too. Criminal Minds could have stood without him, but it's great that it's going with him!! CHEERS for picking a super actor to add to the already talented cast!!

I haven't watched last night's episode yet, but I have been enjoying this season so far. I'll watch it and come back and vote.

I thought the episode was excellent!

I think his character brings some fresh tension to the group, even if he was kind of hard to like at first.

And, as for seeds of romance....umm...no, it looked more like seeds of sexual harrassment to me. I think the implication was clear that he doesn't respect women as equals on the team. All part of that "old school" persona he's bringing to the mix.

Thanks bluefairies, at least I'm not the only one who didn't like last night's episode and the addition of "Mr. I've got something to hide". Talk about being a hypocrite. He tells Hotchner that he shouldn't keep the secret of Hotchner's separation from everyone, but yet he makes Garcia swear not to tell anyone about what he's looking into.

No disrespect to Joe Mantegna. He is a good actor, but I really don't think they wrote the part well. I also found him to be creepy and contrived.

When I first started watching this show it was for Mandy Patinkin. I have loved him since The Princess Bride. But after watching a few episodes I found that I liked the interaction between the characters so much that I didn't care anymore that it was Mandy Patrinkin who brought me to the show. To me, they didn't need to replace him. They would have been fine without him.

Joe Mantegna is one of the flattest, most overrated, boring actors of the last 20 years. Don't believe me? Check him out as Spenser, the Boston PI, in some dreadful TV movies. His only realy good work has been as Fat Tony on The Simpsons. This, plus the fact that his character is written as one long chain of cliches, will have me looking elsewhere for my weekly serial killer gore fix.

I agree that Mantegna was miscast as Spenser (who'll always be Robert Urich in my mind), but he's done some other good work, from Mamet's "Homicide" to Woody Allen's "Alice." Give the guy a chance. I used to like Mandy Patinkin, especially in "The Princess Bride," but I felt like you could tell he didn't want to be on Minds, especially towards the end of his run.

Mantegna is a great actor but quite frankly I enjoyed the episodes without his character in them after Mandy P. left - for some reason the writers seem to feel the need for a prima donna agent and I on the other hand liked the team without one after they wrote Gabriel out of the series.

X-(
I really hated this episode!!!
I love all the characters and so far this year I haven't missed Mandy's character. But Joe's character is not likeable and I don't know how long I will be able to watch if they don't give me something to like about him! He was condesending and irrating! Ughhh!!!!!!!!!!!!
