Jeers: Just Another Media Circus

080512celebritycircus.jpg
Celebrity Circus by Chris Haston/NBC
Jeers to Celebrity Circus for being far from the greatest show on Earth. I was impressed by some of the feats performed by Antonio Sabato, Jr., Stacey Dash and Christopher Knight. But turning it into a standard-issue competition with a grinning host (the omnipresent Joey Fatone), viewer voting and a weekly elimination brings NBC's new reality show crashing to Earth. Worst of all is the obligatory trio of judges: trapeze artist Aurelia Cats (whose most coherent comment was meowing at Sabato, Jr.), Olympic gymnast Mitch Gaylord (hey, anyone remember American Anthem?) and flamboyant choreographer Louie Spence (a Bruno Tonioli wannabe). CBS' Circus of the Stars didn't need this kind of gimmickry—or a weekly time slot.

If they insist on reviving Circus of the Stars, what's wrong with sticking to the old format? The enjoyment of the show was supposed to be seeing familiar stars perform, with varying degrees of ability, routines from the circus. Why does there have to be voting and eliminations?

why don't they call these shows what they are: "Has Been Desperately Hoping You Remember Them and Will give Them A Job As They Are More Than Willing To Whore Themselves Out To The Lowest Bidder"?

Okay - maybe that's a bit long? How about just "Has Beens on Parade"?

I saw the premiere and was simply astounded! How can you not love old man Peter Brady doing the high wire? They just need more shots of Adrianne Curry cheering him on and I think got something. Maybe they will next week.

Remember the old days when they had Circus of the Stars or Battle of the Network Stars and the people on them were actually still celebrities who had active careers that did not consist exclusively of reality shows.

People who were actually currently starring on popular prime time television shows or movies actually participated.
