Cheers: Upholding the Law

Anthony Anderson by Will Hart/NBC
Cheers to Law & Order for surviving another cast change without missing a beat. NBC's venerable drama has now replaced fully half its ensemble in less than a year, and the newest addition, Anthony Anderson, fits like a glove. (It's no surprise, considering he's worked both sides of the law as a cop on K-Ville and a drug kingpin on The Shield.) As Detective Kevin Bernard, a by-the-book Internal Affairs vet, Anderson brings a heft to L&O's first half-hour not seen since the days of George Dzundza and Paul Sorvino. But I'd expect nothing less from an actor who can handle roles in everything from The Departed to Kangaroo Jack.

Anderson was fine but the episode was kind of tedious, especially the ending with the way Cutter convinced the defendant to accept a plea deal. Pretty lame.

I only saw half the episode because of baseball and basketball playoffs but I enjoyed Anthony Anderson. I am glad the writers showed some visible tension and mistrust on Lupo's part. It will be interesting to see how these two work together as time goes on.

I have to say though it was so strange not seeing Jesse Martin in the titles...

abbeyroad i agree that it was strange to not see Jesse L. Martin in the intro. I like the transition of Anthony Anderson into the role, it didn't seem too forced. I actually liked seeing "Creepy Cutter" convincing the guy he was a member of the Systemonics.

Will Lupo stay for another season or is there going to be a revolving door on this show as is on the other L&O programs.

For me the best part was the very end of the show when Cutter said "How do you know that I am not in Systematics"? He sure seemed to know a lot about it. I like Anthony Anderson and think he and Lupo will make a very interesting partner team.

I also like this current ensemble. Let's hope they keep them for a while! I think what makes the cast changes easier to accept with L&O is that with all the repeats on cable tv, I am use to seeing different actors in the roles. But I miss Jerry Orbach. He and Chris Noth are still my favorites.

couldn't stand anthony. i mean he's a fine actor but they didn't explain how his character got there. personally i wouldn't have taken him into the precinct. furthermore he wasn't that bright and he was too by the book, just a slow moe on the case. i text my girlfriend at nbc and said 'get him out of there NOW.'

I was all prepared to hate Bernard because I so hated the cop he played in one of the SVU episodes. Watching Jesse Martin's last episode, though, I realized that the problem wasn't with the actor, but with the way that cop was written. He really impressed me on Jesse's last episode and again this week. I still haven't gotten used to Cutter, but Bernard seems to be part of the family already.

I REALLY hope that Jeremy Sisto stays on next season (and longer if the show keeps going - I SO want to see it make 20 or 21 seasons!) On the cops side, they seem to have a really good group now. I also really like how they've beefed up Rubirosa's role on the DA side and are letting her shine out more - I wasn't too sure what I thought of her last season, but this season I've grown to like her quite a bit. I really wish they would have moved her up to the EADA position and brought in a new ADA for her.

Mine too; well as well as Ben Stone. I loved him as the A.D.A., but Jack is growing on me.

Same here! It was just one episode, a couple of seasons ago, when Mariska Hargitay was on semi-maternity leave--that character was so obnoxious, so over the top, I had reservations about him coming on as a regular. But he impressed me. I like his very low-key K. Bernard.

I haven't enjoyed watching this show since Noth left.
