Cheers: The Adams Family's Real Star

Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney in John Adams by Kent Eanes/HBO
Cheers (or should I say "Huzzah!") to Laura Linney for her glorious portrayal of Abigail Adams in HBO's rousing miniseries John Adams. It's easy to understand the Founding Father's devotion to his First Lady: She's headstrong yet steadfast, fiercely protective of her family and knows how to handle a gun. Where can I find a woman like that? The Savages star should've won an Oscar or two by now, but she can rest assured she'll win her third Emmy (after Frasier and 2001's TV-movie Wild Iris) for this truly revolutionary performance.

I agree. They should go ahead and engrave Linney's name on the Emmy and set one aside for Giamatti, too. Once again HBO has set the bar as high as it can be set and I look forward to the remaining 5 episodes with fervor. The casting is spot on all around and costuming, set design, cinematography and screenplay are all magnificent. Even better than "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" was.

Linney was superb as Ms. Adams! I cannot imagine the hardships and challenges Mrs. Adams faced but Linney is selling the part like there is no tomorrow!

The real Abigail Adams was renowned for being headstrong, steadfast, fiercely protective of her family and pretty outspoken, too. Her letters to John Adams show how she was pretty much a simple mom during all those years he was serving his country. But, there was such a great love between the two of them that they depended on each other to keep the world from tilting, even from afar.

Frankly, Bruce, if you can find a woman like her, more power to you. I think the Adams had a rare and beautiful relationship.
