Wipeout: John from Cincinnati Canceled!
Greyson Fletcher in John from Cincinnati by John P. Johnson/HBO
No official word from HBO, but my sources are telling me that John from Cincinnati has been axed after one dismally rated and atrociously reviewed season.
Now let's put Deadwood back on the air and forget this whole thing ever happened. K?

Fantastic! JFC was one of the worst television series ever. What a stinker! It actually jumped the shark half way through the first episode. And I think that's one of the most irritating and overused terms ever so I do not use it lightly.

Of course, HBO will probably still not make those promised "Deadwood" movies we all would like to see, but they might hire Milch again to create a new show.
But this time, they'll want an even smaller budget, so Milch will create a show starring a piece of string, a button, and a piece of lint from his pocket. It'll be called "Pockettown" and it'll consist of watching the string, button, and lint do overly cute, "quirky" and inexplicable things for an hour every week. Each episode will take place over the course of one day.
Many people will wonder why anyone would want to waste their time watching a piece of string, a button, and a piece of lint do idiotic things for an hour, when they ought to be watching a great show like "Deadwood," but "Pockettown" will have a small cult of rabid fans who constantly insist that there is great significance in everything the string, button, and piece of lint do and that everyone else is "just not getting it."
After one set of ten episodes, "Pockettown" will be cancelled, but instead of working on finishing "Deadwood," HBO will hire Milch to create a new show. But this time it will star an ant, a penny (actually the entire budget for the show), and a piece of used chewing gum scraped off the sidewalk. And Rebecca DeMornay.

John from Cincinnati was a fantastically done show. I watched it through its entirety and it was something more than genius. It was just as complicated as it was hilarious and it deserves way more than the criticisms it got.
And in my opinion - Ed O'Niel should be recieving the emmy for best supporting actor in a drama series.

Thank goodness they stopped wasting money on this show. Even the actors were going crazy, not knowing till the day of shooting what their characters were going to do.
Here is a link to an interview with David Milch where he explains what the series is all about. Please do not read this if you have not seen the season finale.

Unfortunately, I do not think we will ever get our Deadwood movies. HBO was just blowing smoke up our skirts. Just took us to motel hell and dumped us fans with a "I'll call ya!"
I really hope HBO and David Milch learned a lesson from all this - not everything put on paper is worth putting on TV.

I liked the show but I was left very confused more confused than ever by the finale.
Ed O'Neil was amazing on the show. He made the finale.

I don't think the Deadwood movies are going to happen either. Too bad because I think most of the cast would be available to come back. However, Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant would be the most difficult to bring back.
HBO did so many things right over the last decade but this is one mistake that may be viewed at as the moment the network went down hill, depending on what happens the next couple of years in their original programming.

May I ask, who are your "sources"? What I gather is that it's officially a rumor, but it's been that for over a month now. This adds nothing new.
That said, I have no doubt that the show will be canceled. It's far to esoteric and abstract for most audiences and as is typical of absurdist drama it lacks high concept and resolution, kind of like life. That said, I did enjoy the characters' journey and like most audiences sat their patiently awating Godot.
I have no axe to grind regarding Deadwood. The show took a departure in the second season from the track that initially interested me and I was uncommitted on it by the end. If it comes back I'll watch it, if it doesn't, I'll watch something else.
Godspeed.

I think all the hatred towards John is mostly the backlash from the cancellation of Deadwood. Sure it wasnt HBO's finest work, but for the few episodes it was given - way too few - it entertained and astonished.
And I cant help but feel some (not all) of this severe hatred is just another case of bandwagon hopping.
