Viva's Dead! Will Brothers & Sisters' Gay Reverend Return?
Eric Winter and Matthew Rhys by Scott Garfield/ABC
How do I love thee, cancellation of Viva Laughlin? Let me count the ways….
1) It means there's one less mind-numbingly awful TV show clogging up the airwaves.
2) It hastens the return of TV's best reality series, The Amazing Race.
3) It frees up Eric Winter to return to Brothers & Sisters as Kevin's minister boyfriend.
Regarding that last one, although there's no official deal in place for Winter to reprise his role as Rev. Jason McCallister, his speedy return is a foregone conclusion. And if you don't believe me, believe B&S bossman Greg Berlanti:
"Obviously, we wanted Eric's show to succeed, but we would be psyched to have him back," says Berlanti. "While I can't say what will happen to [Kevin and Jason] romantically, we would love to have Eric back as soon as possible. He's a great actor, and he and Matthew are wonderful together. And there's also the fact that he's McCallister's brother, which we always wanted to explore further."
Barring a writers' strike, I predict Kevin and Jason will be canoodling again by January. You guys agree that this is a good thing, right? And in case there's any confusion, I'm referring to both Viva's demise and Rev. Jason's return.

That's awesome! Thanks for the Berlanti quote!
And, yes, bringing Jason back is a very good thing indeed. He and Kevin are a wonderful couple.

I hate to be the voice of doom (and I stress that I have nothing to base this on), but I have a niggling feeling that CBS is going to reneg on season two of Jericho. After the lukewarm response to the summer reruns, I think the network is counting on another nutty fan campaign being too hard to mobilize.
Oh, and the tooth fairy is dead. Had to squeegee her off my windshield last week. Sorry.

I actually had hopes for Laughlin (they weren't high, but I had em). I watched Viva Blackpool after Laughlin was announced during the summer to get a feel. The only thing that sucked on Laughlin was Melanie Griffith. Oh, and the bad writing lol

Hmm. If, as was reported in the vodcast, they really do go through with the wedding in November sweeps, this means Jason won't show up for that. Pity. Looking forward to having him back though -- and please, since this is the best love intrest Kevin has had, can we make him a series regular? That way, no writing around him getting a new pilot again next season.

They already shot the Seven Episodes that they're referring to as "Season 2"...why would they not air them? I can them not picking it up for a full third season, but it would be retarded to not air the episodes they already shot....Or were you just being "fecisious"?

Ok, what's with all the typos in editor's posts today..."too" s/b "to"? I've seen others as well...
TV Gord, didn't you know the 7 episodes of Jericho have already completed filming? I read today that they are wanting to have time to promote its return, so it will be back early next year. I don't understand where all this negative talk is coming from..
On to Eric Winter, why did B&S bring him on the show if they couldn't keep him there, presuming they wanted him for storyline purposes? I guess it is fine he is coming back, but I prefer Scotty.

No, I wasn't being facetious, mrdazzo, sadly. There are plenty of examples of shows that shot multiple episodes that never aired, so having seven episodes in the can is meaningless.
CBS did virtually no promotion of the summer reruns and they didn't exactly build an audience. I just don't think the network has much faith in a second season of the show. If they do bring it back, I would be willing to bet it's pulled before all seven episodes air.
Just to be clear, I hope it does come back and I wish it would do well. I just have a hunch fans should prepare themselves to be disappointed.

I prefer cater-waiter Scotty, but I do like Jason too.
As for Jericho, it's tough to say. They're leaving a big break between the summer reruns and Season 2, which isn't a good thing for promotion. That's how they killed the show to begin with. But I don't think there's any way they won't air the full 7 episodes. Not after the cancellation, fan campaign, and renewal.

nsgalThe producers of B&S cast Eric before VL had been picked up as a pilot. So presumably they were hoping it wouldn't be picked up, and the reason they took the risk was because they really liked him in this role.
This is also the reason they wrote him an open-ended exit--if VL was cancelled (as it quickly was), then the character could easily return.

The only disappointing thing about Viva's cancellation is we'll probably never see the Eric Winter with an ice cream cone scene that was in the previews... tragic.
I really, really, REALLY hope he returns to Brothers and Sisters ASAP. Scotty is incredibly boring... I don't get the hype about him, but whatever. Hopefully his seven episodes will be done and Jason can come back and we'll get to see a real relationship between him and Kevin.
Please keep us updated, Michael!
