Updated: USA Expresses "Deep Sadness" Over Dual Cancellations

UPDATE: I just got my hands on an exclusive statement from Jeff Wachtel, USA Exec VP Original Programming, regarding the demise of Dead Zone and The 4400: "We wish we could keep all our great shows alive forever. But we feel we need to give some of our new shows a platform to grow, and it's with great sadness that we say goodbye to two shows that had a great run and helped create the resurgence of original programming on our network and on all of cable."

My original story appears below.

Next time USA Network gives you a lump of coal for Christmas, be thankful — very thankful — because this year, my moles tell me, what you're getting is the cancellation of both Dead Zone and The 4400.

Yep, per multiple sources, the much-discussed Armageddon came early to Dead Zone — so early, in fact, that the show's last episode aired... gee, back in September. What turned out to be the 4400's series finale aired the same night.

In a statement posted on the official 4400 message boards, series creator Scott Peters said, "We've had a great time bringing you this story and submersing you in the lives of all these incredible characters. Let me raise my metaphorical glass to you all and thank you for being so loyal and so dedicated. I wish we could go on forever, but the party has come to an end."

Already, petitions were circulating to get The 4400 renewed, but is the effort too little, too late? Can anything bring The Dead Zone back to life? Or should the shows be allowed to rest in peace? Discuss, debate and, if you have to weep, do it quietly, huh?

:( Well that bites since both shows were 2 of my favorites, especially 4400.

Oh well, Merry Christmas to us all.

4400... nooooooo!!!

As satisfying as the season/series finale was, I was banking on an all new season showing us the outcome of the characters. Did Tom take the shot? What power did he develope? What of Diana? And Jordan? And Marco?

They really need to do a goodbye movie for both shows.

Ok, more thana little upsetting!!!!! I love the 4400 and will really miss it. I thought it was one of the most interesting and better shows that TV had to offer.

Shame on USA

I hate when the cancel one of my favorite shows during the off season. That means you get no conclusion. 4400 needs a finale or a movie in the worst way. That wasn't something that should be cancelled without warning. Is shows they don't care about the shows fans.

Nooooooooo. I always look forward to those two series and hoped to get more conclusion when they ended.

They just canceled the only reason I've ever turned to their channel. Great year for television!

This was a fantastic show. Maybe, if the writer's strike ever gets resolved, some of these writers could get jobs over at "Heros" and save that sinking ship.

This show was so much better at introducing new characters and their abilities than "Heros". The writing was soooo much better.

Joel Gretch is having a tough week - first the news comes that his current gig is not producing any more episodes ("Journeyman"), now this to top it off. That sucks.

At last one of my favorite characters is going forward - looking forward to Summer Glau ("Tess") in "Sarah Conner Chronicles".

This was a good USA Network show, something will be missing over the summer.

Dang, I hate it when networks cancel shows without allowing them a proper good-bye. There was so much that could've been done with The 4400, and so many un-answered questions that'll now be left hanging there. Oh well. At least I still have Burn Notice and Psych, that is if the strike doesn't kill them.

I didn't watch the Dead Zone, so I can't really say much about it, but as for 4400...

I'm actually really okay with the cancellation. The last episode felt very complete, and if they continued, I'd be afraid they wouldn't end it on so satisfying a note. It was a great show, it had a great run, and a great ending.

I'm so sick show cancellation.
It's really going to make it difficult for the networks to get viewers invested in new show.
I will definitely be thinking twice!

Hey Ausiello, when are you going to find out whether the rumors that BIONIC WOMAN has been cancelled are true or not?

They need to have a series finale or movie for both, after watching for that many years we deserve that much.
