UPDATED: Why Gilmore Girls is Ending
Gilmore Girls by Mark Liddell/The CW
In the end, they just couldn't strike a deal.
That, in a nutshell, is the reason Gilmore Girls isn't returning for an eighth season.
Multiple sources confirm that Warner Bros. recently made one final offer to Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel that included sizeable salary bumps for both in exchange for a shortened 13-episode season. As is now obvious, that offer was rejected.
The show's cast and crew — many of whom thought an eighth season was in the bag — are said to be in a state of shock. "Everyone was pretty blindsided by this and still processing it at the moment," reports a Gilmore insider. "Talks must have broken down very, very recently because it came as one hell of a surprise."
The good news? The May 15 finale was meant to serve as either a series or season finale. And having just read the script, I can assure you that it's a satisfying conclusion to the series. As I previously teased, it brings Gilmore full circle.
Warner Bros. and the CW released this joint statement: "Announcing the final season of Gilmore Girls is truly a sad moment for everyone at The CW and Warner Bros. Television. This series helped define a network and created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television's most memorable, lovable characters. We thank Amy Sherman-Palladino, Dan Palladino, Dave Rosenthal, the amazing cast led by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as well as the producers, writers and crew for giving us this delightful gem for the past seven years. We would also like to thank the critics and Gilmore fans for their passionate support and promise to give this series the send off it deserves."
Much more to come. In the meantime, post your eulogies below. Stay strong, guys.

How sad!
If the season finale is already filmed, how are they going to give it the send off it deserves? Things can not be resolved in two or three more episodes, especially with Luke and Lorelai's relationship.

No! This is so sad. I'm worried Luke/Lorelei will not be settled in a way that we all want. Sigh.

How is this an ending we deserve? It's season four. Rory off on her own and LL kissage.

You're going to get a nice long in-depth interview with LG right?
This is completely uncool.

Not too long ago I didn't even hesitate when asked which show should stay Gilmore or Veronica, hands down Veronica needs it's chance to find it's audience. Now that it's offical that the Girls are done I can't help but cry. Rory is younger then me, but I still felt like I had the chance to grow up with her. I will miss it all especially now that it's finally starting to feel like a show worth watching again. Tuesday's ep with lorelei singing to luke, sob!

Seriously, Christopher wasted the whole season.

I'm disappointed. My heart sank. I've enjoyed (most of) the ride and am a little dihearted by the fact that we finally got out girls back and now they're going.

I have to agree with reflectinglight. I quit watching the show regularly this season when I heard about the elopement, but still watched every once in a while. Though I think the time had come for it to end, it is still sad news. Now, I just hope they don't cancel VM as well...

So now that it's done you're gonna get AS-P on the phone and find out those final words she had in mind, right?
Personally, I have no problem with the show ending, but I really do hope the finale is satisfying. Frankly, I think they should have gone into this year planning for it to be the end. It's incredibly unfair to drag these things out to the last minute for both the people who work on the show and the viewers. That's why, though I was sad to see it go, when Angel got canceled I was at least glad the decision came down months in advance so everyone had time to prepare for the finale.

Blame the stars of the show, not the network. They refused to sign a contract so the show could get the ending its fans deserve. It probably got to the point where the CW could not afford to offer any more money and still the stars refused to sign.

I think that its possible L/L will get resolved in an appropriate manner...especially given what happened in this past week's episode (specifically, with April). And I thought I'd be sadder as a long-time GG fan, but personally, if the ending of the Gilmore era increases Veronica Mars's chance even a little bit, then I'm content.
