Random Scoop/Gripes: Alias, Oprah, Betty and More!

Here's my mini week-in-review, with a few pieces of prattle mixed in...

* It almost happened. Michael Vartan was thisclose to returning to TV. According to a fresh batch of intel from one of my APO moles, Vartan was in talks to join the cast of one my five current favorite shows. But sadly, the deal fell through.

* Just weeks after Oprah revealed that she had never heard of a little thing called the Kinsey Scale (WTF?), Gayle's BFF confessed on yesterday's Oprah that she wasn't aware that an HIV-positive person could be re-infected with a different strain of the virus (double WTF?). I seriously hope this whole dumb act is just her attempt to appear more relatable to the average viewer.

* In related news, The View needs to put Elisabeth Hasselbeck out of her freakin' misery. I have to shield my eyes from the TV whenever she opens her mouth — especially when the topic turns to politics. It's not her stance on the issues that I have a problem with (OK, maybe that's part of it), it's the difficulty she has expressing her views that causes me to break out in a cold sweat. And as an interviewer, she ranks somewhere between Ann Curry and Jiminy Glick. I swear I thought she was having a seizure when she started grilling Josh Legend this week. Even Rosie looked mortified. Enough is enough.

* All of my video interviews from Monday's Fox fall party are now available on my brand new tvguide.com hub page. Warning: You may wanna throw on a scarf before watching the David Boreanaz and William Fichtner clips. They're a little, um, icy.

* Nothing against the transcendent America Ferrera, but the real star of last night's Ugly Betty was the episode's director, Rodman Flender. Have you seen more creative scene-to-scene transitions in your life?

* Scrubs is returning Nov. 30! Yippee! It's airing opposite Grey's Anatomy, The O.C., CSI and Supernatural! Mwaaaaa!

* As you know, Wayne Brady has been cast as Barney's brother on How I Met Your Mother. What you may not know is that there's a hugely hysterical twist in store that has nothing to do with the character's skin color.

* Isaiah Washington's mea culpa? Too little, too late, IMHO.

Can you really not say which show? Was it LOST? VM? At least clearly define your five favs! That's crazy news!

I think I have a good idea of what your top 5 might be, and Lost seems to be the only logical answer; That would have been frackin' fantastic. The least you can do is find out why the deal fell through.

If it was "Lost," I'm glad. I never thought Vartan brought much to his role on "Alias," and "Lost" doesn't need more pretty people wandering around.

At the risk of occasioning further wrath from Mr. Ausiello, I have heard neither of the Kinsey Scale nor of the double infection thing, and neither has my much younger and hipper co-worker sitting next to me here in sunny California. Are you sure you're not just more aware on the issue than most people?

I have no idea what show Mr. Vartan was going to join but I wouldn't be too sure it was Lost.

What surprised me most about the Oprah thing yesterday is that she seemed to grasp the concept that HIV lowers/suppresses the immune system, so it seems only logical that sex with another infected person would leave an HIV patient with the chance of a further infection from another strain. I just chalked it up to her not fully absorbing everything she was being told in that eye-opening hour.

I agree with you about Scrubs, Betty and Isaiah Washington, but Michael, I'm afraid you and I will always have to agree to disagree about Elisabeth Hasselbeck. IMHO, you are letting her conservative "View" color your opinion of her. I seldom agree with her hardline Bushiness, but I think she expresses herself well. I think she's too easily dismissed because she's a cute blonde, but not all of them are dumb. And as Elisabeth proves, not all of them are fun, either ;)!!! (Did I just say that???) :-D

The Sarah Callies video isn't working for me...the audio works but not the video. Anyway thanks for posting them, I can't wait for Michael-Sara-hotel room! Even if there's nothing 'happening', and even if T-Bag gets a sex change... *I shudder at the though*

Elizabeth makes me cringe everytime she opens her mouth.

This is why I shouldn't read the comments section, some people forget that not everybody wants to know the big secret on an upcoming show. In this case, I was happy to sit back and watch Wayne Brady as Barney's brother and not know the big laugh line. I believe that Michael Ausiello does a wonderful job of either letting us know a spoiler is coming up, or even deeming a shows spoiler too good to tell because it would ruin the impact. Cheers to Ausiello for hinting not saying, Jeers to iownyou for spoiling the big surprise.

So because she's Oprah she's supposed to know everything? She had never heard of Costco either. I'm sure there are plenty of things she doesn't know. Big and small. Let's not shoot her just yet.

let's see... mr ausiello's fav tv shows... gilmore girls, veronica mars, battlestar gallactica, lost, and... (the 5th is where i'm having the hardest time)... heroes, ugly betty, grey's anatomy. of those, i would love to see mr. vartan in lost, or heroes (even though a lorelia and vartan match up wouldn't be scoffed at). c'mon mike, give us at least an asterick quiz of which show vartan was going to be in! then we can at least know which one to miss the eye candy in.

Michael,

How can we share so many of the same favorite shows and differ on politics? I think you've been brainwashed by the New York Media Machine. Rosie is the one who needs to stop putting her foot in her mouth. Meanwhile, just watched Ugly Betty for the first time this week and LOVED it!! Had to downlo--, or uh, I mean, beg friends for the previous episodes to get caught up.
