Exclusive: Will Rosie and Friday Night Lights Play Ball?

Is Rosie O'Donnell ready for some football? The producers of NBC's critical darling Friday Night Lights certainly hope so.

FNL execs are wooing the ex-View lightning rod to appear in an episode this fall. "Rosie's a big fan of Friday Night Lights, as we know from The View, and we heard she was interested in being on the show," executive producer Jason Katims tells me. "Usually we don't do any stunt casting, but we have a character coming up — six or seven episodes into the new season — of a female soccer coach who is really angry about all of the school's resources going to football. It's a really funny character and I think she'd be perfect for it.

"There's a scene where she comes in to see Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and slams a dead soccer ball on his desk and basically says, 'You're the guy who gets everything!'" Katims continues. "It's a really fun scene, and it's the one time I'm thinking of stunt casting."

Katims, who will formally approach O'Donnell in the coming weeks, says he's willing to tailor the part to fit her wants/needs. "It would be one episode, but the way we write things, we stay very open to abrupt things," he says. "So if she comes out, loves doing it, and wants to do more, she could do it. But initially, it would be just one scene, and that would be the way to get her. Knowing that she could come [out to the show's Austin, Texas, set], hang out, have a scene with Kyle Chandler and then be done could be very appealing to her."

Responds O'Donnell's rep, Cindi Berger: "No definitive plans. They are in talks and she loves the show."

FNL would no doubt benefit as well. An appearance by the headline magnet could give the ratings-challenged drama just the shot in the arm it needs.

Thoughts? You game for a O'Donnell recruitment? Or is FNL swimming in jump-the-shark territory? Let the Wednesday-morning quarterbacking begin in the comments section below!

Diehard View addicts know that while Rosie has boasted FNL over the last year, she is a firm believer that Boston Legal "is the best show on TV right now!"

A Rosie appearance may provide exactly what this show needs - hype and viewers. She may be more convincing as a football coach though...

I think she would be a good soccer coach. Friday Night Lights needs the hype. I hope she does it.

I think the story angle sounds pretty funny. I don't have a problem with a stunt cameo as long as it doesn't pull us out of the show. Maybe not a touchdown due to some of the public's distaste for Ro, but perhaps a field goal.

I detect no dorsal fins.

Ugh. Why bring Rosie onto this show; even for one episode? I am so over her. FNL is perfect the way it is; don't mess it up. And, isn't it a little too early for stunt casting? I don't think the "hype" she would create for FNL is the kind of hype the show needs. Emmy hype would be better...

I guess I am in the minority here. I can't stand Rosie and would absolutely hate to see her in the show. She ruined Nip/Tuck for me when she was a guest star on that, so who is to say that this would be any different?

Not sure I like this possibility - I think Rosie being on the show would pull viewers out of the world of Dillon. The storyline and character are fine, but I'm afraid this is too much stunt casting that I wish FNL wouldn't play into. Even though Rosie is a fan of the show, I don't think this is something FNL needs. I really hope it doesn't suffer from a sophomore slump - some of the spoilers for next season are worrying me!

I think the problem here is some folks have forgotten, the woman can act. She's so known for being herself but when it comes to playing someone else Rosie's got skills. It's more to do with how the media portrays the casting than the casting itself.

Now, am I the only one wondering about any other motivation for including her? It's on NBC and there was that joke about including her on a celebrity Apprentice (which she squashed) and Isaiah just got latched onto by NBC recently. Why am I being cynical here and thinking Ben Silverman suggested this to Katims and Co.? Sure maybe they like it just fine but maybe they wouldn't have thought of it without a little help from higher up who's clearly working the stunt casting with Isaiah on Bionic Woman and Jerry Seinfeld on 30 Rock.

I definately don't want to see her on FNL. I love this show and that would truly ruin it for me.

I'm pretty burnt out on her rant. I really don't want any more opportunities to see her than I already have.

Is her 15 minutes ever going to be over?

The camera work already pulls me out of Dillon Maybe watching Rosie O'Donnell on the show could delay the inevitable headaches I get when watching the show.

like someone else said--

the hype of rosie being on the show isn't the kind of fnl needs.

and it's not that i have a problem with her, i just sort of think having her on the show wouldn't help at all

It sounds pretty funny to me too, and it doesn't sound that bad to me. At this point, anything to get more viewers to FNL. I don't want the show to be dumbed down or anything but I think Rosie could pull it off and the FNL team could do it without making it seem like such a big stunt.

Rosie would be great, but they should have Barbara Eden as her lover.
