Exclusive: "Glimmer of Hope" for Veronica Mars

This is why I always tell you people that it ain't over till it's over: According to my CW moles, bless their hairy little hearts, the odds of Veronica Mars being renewed just went from "so-so" to "pretty good." Suddenly, per my spy, "There's a glimmer of hope." Here's why:

• Since Gilmore Girls is packing it in, the network suddenly has an extra hour of prime real estate available. What are they gonna do, renew 7th Heaven again? (That was a joke, CW. Don't get any ideas.)

• CW prez Dawn Ostroff is said to have responded very favorably to the trailer that series creator Rob Thomas shot for a potential reworking of the show with VM as an FBI agent (think Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs, only with way better hair and funnier dialogue). What's more, sources whisper to me that on the strength of that presentation, Thomas and Co. have been asked for more deets of the proposed revamp.

• Big changes are afoot — starting at the very top. "They've talked about a title change," says my spy. (Hey, if the quality remains the same, they can call it Veronica Mars Presents: The Search for the Next Pussycat Doll for all I — and I suspect all of us V fans — care.) Furthermore, there would likely be a major cast shake-up, with Bell the only guaranteed carryover.

So what do you think, people? Isn't VM worth saving, even if it means we'll have to flash-forward through her remaining college years? (There are only so many keggers a girl can go to, anyway.) And what about new titles? Do we really want to leave that up to the suits that eighty-sixed Everwood? Methinks now might be a good time to start offering up suggestions.

Well I have to watch something, since GG isn't coming back...

Just half-kidding, I kind of like VM.

I'll watch - no matter what they call it - hopefully KB won't be the only remaining cast member though - need either Keith or Mac to stick around

Let's be honest. While the rest of the cast is amazing, we are really tuning in for Kristen Bell. As long as her character is the same, I'm down for her being in any setting that can be logically (well tv logic) be explained.

Plus we've seen so many college drama shows. With one year under its belt, I think we might as well make the leap to real world.

Is Veronica Mars worth saving?

HELL YES!

A move up in years and a location shift to Virginia would be probably be a bit jarring, but it can also be refreshing. And if it brings in more viewers, I'll be cheering until I'm hoarse.

The hardest part of the change, for me, would be loosing characters. I'll miss Keith, Wallace, and Mac if there not there, even if it's logical.

As for a new title, why does it need one? As long as Veronica is the main character, why does the name have to be changed?

Do acquire a real audience I think that this is the direction that VM needs to go. I do not believe that all we currently love about the show will be lost - I actually think that there is much much more to gain by going to the new format.

For those of you who do not like the idea - go back and watch Silence of the Lambs - and think about Veronica Mars instead of Clarice Starling.

I love the idea!

If the cast changes it won't be the same show... And it's the whole cast wich makes a whole show not only a little mean girl!
What will they do to get rid of the whole cast? Will they kill them in an airplane crash or train crash?! If it's a good show with keith, logan and wallace also in it I will watch. Otherwise I won't.

I will watch Veronica Mars no matter if they change the name or if Kristen Bell is the only cast member returning. Although it would feel a little empty without Enrico Colantoni as Keith.

I'll take Veronica however we can get her. I would miss a lot of the other cast members if they went away - but I have ultimate faith in Rob Thomas to make a great show that I want to watch. (Case in point - I hated the *idea* of Veronica and Piz, but after seeing it play out last week I'm curious to see where they go!)

My worry is that we'll lose the spark and the snark that is Veronica if they send her for FBI training. I don't know if I can handle watching her attempt to do things "by the book." Or worse, be a stereotypical maverick. Is a bad VM better than no VM? If they play around with it too much, I'd almost be willing to say goodbye instead. (Just, whatever they do, they best keep Supernatural and don't mess with it!)

Ugh. Has no one learned from the creative debacle that was the last three seasons of The John Larroquette Show? You cannot keep changing and changing and changing the fundamental premise of a show every single year. As much as I want to see Bell and Colantoni continue to be employed on the same show, they've already done two years of a high school show and one year of a college show -- a flash-forward to become an FBI Agent show is one too many remakes as it is in too darn short an amount of time.

And the ratings don't justify it one bit. The WB cancelled Related (a show just as good as VM is right now, which is to say that VM isn't as good as its first two seasons right now, but getting back on the right track) when it got the same type of ratings -- just as low overall, mainlining its ratings only from the target demographics with no potential for growth beyond the demos whatsoever. What makes the CW think that viewers beyond the show's small core fanbase (a fanbase that *does* include me) aren't going to ignore Veronica Mars just like they've always done?

Heck, Everwood got better ratings than VM ever has and it got cancelled even though the decision was up to Ostroff.

Just another example of The CW needing to look at its instincts and do the exact opposite. Cancel Veronica Mars now whle it contines to be a well-regarded cult show rather than destroy its reputation by giving into Rob Thomas's continued Josh Schwarz-like lack of focus.

Yes, I think Veronica Mars deserves to be saved, definitely. While "flashing forward" a few years will probably be jarring, one thing we all know for sure is that Kristen Bell can pull it off. Honestly, not that she isn't convincing as a college student, but playing someone closer to her own age and maturity level will take the Veronica character to a different, and probably much better, dimension.

My suggestion, if they decide to revamp the whole cast, is to at least have some characters make occasional "special appearances," hopefully in ways that don't seem contrived. Like, of course, she will still be in touch with her dad. Mac could have some kind of a job in computers and Veronica could still call her for advice and help. Veronica could be dating Piz. None of those people would need to be on every week but it would be nice to keep some connection with Veronica's past.

Thanks for the glimmer of hope, Mike.

I love Veronica Mars and will take it in whatever revamped form I can get it next season. However, it's hard for me to imagine Veronica's world without Keith or Logan or Mac.

I have already stopped watching temporarily because of this Piz nonsense. So, who knows, maybe it will be a much better show since this season does not compare with the previous two.
