Exclusive: 24 Plot Tossed, Production Delayed

Season 7 of 24 promises to be its tensest yet — at least on the set.

Execs at the Fox hit have scrapped virtually their entire story line for the season, delaying the start of production by roughly three weeks. According to sources, the 11th-hour time-out was called after the network put the kibosh on a costly plan to shoot a number of episodes in Africa. Producers briefly toyed with the idea of finding a location in Los Angeles that could sub for the continent, but they ultimately decided to ditch the whole concept and start over from scratch.

Although a Twentieth Century Fox spokesperson declined to comment, 24's expert scowler, Mary Lynn Rajskub, confirms that the clock for Day 7 has been reset. "I don't know what's going on over there, but they're going crazy," says the scene-stealer, who learned only last week that Chloe would be returning. "We usually start [back up] at the end of July, and I don't think we're starting until a couple of weeks into August now. It's kind of exciting, because I think [the postponement] means that they're really having to dig in there and come up with new stuff."

The show's creative team was no doubt already feeling the pressure: Day 6 was considered to be about as explosive as a wet firecracker, so for Season 7 they really needed a plot that was incendiary. In fact, news of the setback comes on the same day the semiannual Television Week critics' poll (in which yours truly participated) named 24 the second-worst show on TV, behind ABC's best-not-traveled October Road.

For more on 24's big rewrite — including what impact it'll have on plans to introduce the show's first female president — check out Ask Ausiello this Wednesday.

This doesn't look good at all.

While this is not the most positive development, we should try not to be overly pessimistic. Remember how well Brothers & Sisters turned out after all of its pre-airing drama.

I'm relieved that Chloe will be back. 24 without Chloe would be like a thunderstorm without the thunder.

24 the second worst show on TV this past season? Second most disappointing, maybe (after Studio 60); but not second worst overall. What about Runaway? Prison Break?

Yeah, I expected more from Studio 60, and then I just stopped watching period. Nothing against Perry & co, but it made them look so bad.

It really was the Spider-Man 3 of the season, not the worst but certainly the most disappointing. Actually i wouldn't mind if they cancelled the show. It's been six great years and we got closure, but the chance of that is slim

I certainly hope this means they are tightening it up. Some reinvention is definitely due and maybe this will help it. The last season was definitely a disappointment, but still not as out-there as Prison Break was last season (although I still watched). We can only hope 24 comes back with a vengeance.

Yikes! Talk about pressure for the writers. First, they had to come up with something better than last season and now this!

Mike, is is true that the since-scrapped plot involved Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest getting kidnapped during an "Idol Gives Back" visit, and Jack having to rescue them?

I gave up after the 6th hour last season and not holding my breath for this season. But most likely will tune it for the first hour. If I find Chloe is 9 months pregnant and working her last shift before her mat. leave I'm just going to delete Fox from my program guide. No offense to Chloe, I love her but can't stand the idea of the "unique storyline" of a pregnant Chloe being kidnapped by terrorists and going into labour at hour 16 with Jack delivering said baby on hour 24!

Oh, please Matt! Surely they'd just let the kidnappers keep Simon and Ryan! :)

I know that 24 was a disappointment last year, but with the stellar season 5 and its wonderful performance for FOX for years, it seems to me that FOX could loosen the purse strings and give them what they need to let the series rebound to its season 5 glory.

Stingy. Stingy. Stingy.

I get the feeling that some of the posters didn't read the news item close enough. The problem wasn't the story, the problem seems to be that fox doesn't want to pay for expensive location shooting. I think after season 5 they probably could have, but the suits are now nervous that ratings will continue to fall. I'm more for a story that goes back to season 1, something more personal. You can only have so many things that can threaten a large number of people. But the first season it was only a few people who were threatened, and that was what made people fall in love with David Pamler, for instance. But they would have to come up with someone other than Kim. They've gone to that well too many times.

You know that and I know that... but being a big cross-promotional Idol-24 thing, we'd have to suspend our disbelief.

We need Jack right here in LA to save the public from Paula's Reality show...So Simon and Ryan are going to call their 24 hr getaway a "Kidnapping?" ;) whatever.....
