« Ausiello Report
Battlestar Galactica to End After Fourth Season

First Gilmore Girls. Then Veronica Mars. And now this.
Sci Fi has announced that Battlestar Galactica will come to an end after its upcoming 22-episode fourth season. The decision was made by exec producers David Eick and Ronald D. Moore.
WTFrak?!
"This show was always meant to have a beginning, a middle and finally, an end," the duo said in a statement. "Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward that end and we've decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms. And while we know our fans will be saddened to know the end is coming, they should brace themselves for a wild ride getting there — we're going out with a bang."
The fourth and final season kicks off in early 2008. As previously reported, the two-hour prequel pic "Razor" will premiere in November.
Eick and Moore are holding a conference call this afternoon to discuss their decision. If you've got questions, post 'em below. Or if you just want to comment on BSG's passing, that's cool, too.
Honestly, the news could be worse. I mean, we've still got 22 episodes left. You can jam a lot of frakkin' closure into 22 episodes.

What the hell is wrong with TV today!?! They cancel all the great shows and leave us with farmers looking to date outside of their livestock and slutty girls looking to, well, be sluttier! At least they know when it will end so we don't get left hanging in the wind. I'm willing to bet those 22 episodes will be jam packed with greatness since there is still a lot to answer and things needing to come to pass. And thank God it didn't get the 13 epi pickup most were hoping for! Can you ask them if they could throw Dualla out an airlock with Cally tied to her! Seriously though, has this decision caused them to abandon any story lines from season 3 to make way for the big bang? I have heard rumors that Sci-Fi dreamed of BSG going for 10 seasons, and Ron Moore pictured 5, so why cut out so early? When will the 2 hour special about Peggy be out to save us from this hellatus? Will Romo Lampkin be back? He seemed to grab a huge fan following? Will Lee/Kara fans will be able to squee with utter delight before the finale? Thats all our fried brains can come up with now......I hope some more intelligent people can come up with something better!

I think TV execs secret plan is to hook us with their few great show like BSG & VM & then piss us off by canceling them.... woo now we can watch 7th Heaven in S Africa & 1 tree hill. great. At least I'll have more time to read.

At least BSG won't have to suffer a last-minute cancellation like some other shows (ahem VM).

Will there be any referrings to the old show, either old characters, stories, or actors in this last season? Come on bring back Lucifer! Does this effect the Pegasus movie at all?

It's really not all that surprising when you think about it. Edward James Olmos has already said that season 4 would be the last. Also, Michael mentioned in a previous Ask Ausiello (2/28/07) that if the 4th season was extended to 22 episodes, it would probably be in order to wrap the series up.
While it's sad to see such an excellent show end, at least it's on the creators/producers' terms. Much like the final season of Buffy, we will know that they are headed towards a definitive conclusion and we will have time to embrace these final few episodes.

These were my thoughts I posted on the BSG board (in response to a comment made by Ron Moore's wife on this topic), but think it is fitting here:
I am glad that we will get an ending BSG deserves. Yes, I will be sad, but the old saying goes every good thing must come to and end, I am just glad TPTB get to end it on their terms. I get annoyed when I am invested in a show just to have it pulled before the creators vision is fully realized.
I am positive it will be a great ending, and who knows maybe Ron's next project will be just as, if not more successful then BSG. I know I will be looking forward to the next story Ron wants to tell.

Any chance we will get a transcript (or at least highlights)- I for one am interested on what they have to say.
I love the show. Most of the questions I would want to ask, they won't answer, so I will just wait until the new season to see how it unfolds.
I am going to make an effort to be spoiler free (other then the Ausiello Report, of course). I knew what was going to happen at the end of the season and for the first time (I have always read spoilers), I was sorry I knew what was going to happen.

All us fans ask for is fair warning and the possibility of closure, and Eick & Moore are giving us both. For that we should be thankful. I'm now positive that the next season will be frakkin' great.

First Gilmore Girls . . .
Ahem. Until the commencement of filming of either the filming of the actual last season of Gilmore Girls (season 8)or of the filming of a 2-hour finale movie written and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino, then Gilmore Girls isn't done yet. Contracts shmontracts. Rory doesn't define the show -- Lorelai AND Rory do. And Lorelai's half of the show has been left egregiously unfinished.
It ain't over until we get real closure, with a real series finale rather than a good series finale that makes a BAD series finale. So c'mon over to the Great 8 Mandate at:

(No, that's not denial of Gg's current production status, that's just plain refusual to take the season finale as anything even remotely resembling the final word on the show -- 'cause it's clearly not.)
Pretty soon all that'll be left is October Road and Deal Or No Deal.
Michael, did you block the Upfronts completely out of your mind? I mean, that's pretty much all there *is* is October Roads and DonDs -- and a gazillion CSIs.

In BSG's case I think it's a good thing. The show is coming towards a natural ending. If they were to have more than one season to finish the story they planned, we would have had to endure a lot of stand-alone episodes. And to be honest, most of those BSG-episodes are worthless anyway. This will ensure en explosive last season, and this great show deserves to go out with a blast.
The ending of VM and GG on the other hand... I still get furious and disgusted when I see next season's awful CW schedule.

So is this a case of the network just not wanting more episodes beyond the upcoming season or the producers genuinely wanting to end the show now? It seems odd to me that the show wouldn't go at least 100 episodes so they could sell this baby into syndication and make millions.
