It's Official: Ugly Betty Demotes Rebecca Romijn

ABC is now confirming what had been rumored for days: Rebecca Romijn will not be returning to Ugly Betty next season as a series regular.

"She'll be back next season in a recurring role," a spokesperson for ABC Studios tells me. "Watch for some juicy twists in her storyline."

Ealier this week, Romijn told the New York Post that recent behind-the-scenes changes at Betty paved the way for her sorta-exit. "They made a tremendous amount of changes, especially with the writing staff. And while I know I'll be coming back next season, with all the changes, I'm not sure they can take care of my character the way they have been. So I'll be... back in a recurring capacity."

I'll have more on Romijn's sorta-ouster in next week's Ask Ausiello. Until then, feel free to sorta-eulogize TV's first full-time transexual in the comments section below.

She doesn't add much to the show...so she won't be missed.

So the de-gaying of Ugly Betty begins...Next, they'll have Justin get a girlfriend, Mark will become neutered, and Mode will transform into a guns-and-ammo magazine.

Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

I don't think that this has anything whatsoever to do with "de-gaying" the show. Other than the big reveal when she arrived that she used to be a man, there hasn't been much about the character that has been particularly gay. I would think that it would be entirely possible for a new viewer to have no clue at all that she's supposed to be transgendered, because she's basically a female character, as if she'd been born that way. The real reason for her departure is probably just as kamotion said... Alexis just doesn't add anything to the show. They haven't been doing much with her and they probably don't know where to go with the character. That said, I would be really annoyed if they tried to give Justin a girlfriend. Better to leave his sexuality officially unspecified than to make him the opposite of the way they've been portraying him.

Justin did have a girlfriend earlier this season. Don't you remember when he was making out on the couch with a girl when Hilda was up in her room "living" with Santos? I'm not sure if Mark Indelicato's flack requested the "de-gaying" of Justin or if they wrote that to keep his sexuality ambiguous.

It could just be that as the ratings for Ugly Betty start to tank (as it was to be expected, what a horrible series..) they're cutting expenses. Perhaps all the extra expenses, like America Ferrara's biweekly liposuction sessions means that they need to cut the fat elsewhere. ;)

I think this is a shame. I enjoy the character, I love the Alexis/Daniel dynamic (also Alexis/Claire,) and I think RR does a fine job. (Yes, I realize I'm in the minority.)

I too think this has more to do with ABC/Disney cutting corners than anything else. Personally, I'd much rather see less of Gio or Hilda. *ducks*

I'm sad to see her go, since I liked Daniel/Alexis, but honestly, next to Henry, she's the most expandable character of the whole show.

I also don't think her exist has anything to do with de-gaying the show, it has probably more to do with cutting down expenses and honestly they don't need that many characters on the show.

I actually always forgot that Alexis used to be a man. And I believe I am not the only one.

So, now I am rooting for Freddie Rodriguez to become a regular and for Christopher Gorham to finally leave. I hate Henry.

Great news, she was an aweful addition to the show; her acting is atrocious and her character sucked.

buh bye RR

I don't dislike Alexis or Rebecca's portrayal of her.

By the way, lovely comment, Mares.

Boo! I love Rebecca Romijn. I want her there full-time! Damn, that's a shame. Hope the writers and producers know what they're doing.

Aww, sad. I agree that she hasn't had much of a storyline as of late, I still loved her.

This show is enough like a daytime soap that I think what they are doing is simply backburnering Rebecca Romijn-Go-mos for now, and they may bump her back up again, if need be.

This is a show that I don't really watch that intently. I put it on and do other things, and wait for a really funny line to grab my attention. Then I'll rewind to get the set up for the joke. I guess you'd call that Barely-Pay-Attention-TV. ;)

Add me to the minority of RR fans. I like her character on the show and the dynamic between her and Daniel, also her and Claire. Glad they are not eliminating her altogether, part time is better than no time!
