UPDATED! Friday Night Lights Over... But Not Out?

THIS JUST IN: According to preliminary ratings, FNL pulled in a below-average 1.7 in the demo. In other words, time to start campaigning (scroll to bottom for more on that).

It's now or never, Friday Night Lights fans.

Since the drama's second season is being released on DVD in April with (tellingly) only the 15 pre-strike episodes included, it is highly unlikely that the show will return this season. And unless you tune in in droves — and bring friends, strangers and pets to the Nielsen box — tonight's season finale could well serve as the series finale.

At least on NBC.

Although Peacock prez Ben Silverman's dismissive comments in Radar this week imply that he isn't among FNL's supporters, many of his colleagues both at the network and studio still believe in the show in a big way. In fact, my source tells me that execs are working 'round the clock exploring options to keep the show alive. Among them:

• A shared cable window. You know how USA gets first dibs on Law & Order: Criminal Intent originals, with the encores airing on the Peacock? Imagine a similar scenario with FNL and… ESPN, perhaps?

• Cost-cutting. Although how that could be achieved, I can't imagine. Already, FNL is relatively inexpensive to produce, and it's one of the smoothest-running shows on the air — not only did it survive the loss of exec producer Jason Katims to Bionic Woman for an extended period, it got 15 eps in the can pre-strike compared to other shows' 12 or 13.

• An altogether new home. If NBC dumps the show, the studio will likely shop it to other outlets like... ESPN, perhaps? Or maybe CW?

But of course the best-case scenario would be to keep FNL right where it is, operating exactly as it is. And for that to happen, it's going to need you. Heck, in this endeavor, we're all going to need each other. So let's do it: Let's build the audience. A demo rating above a 2.0 would make the show's renewal all but a sure thing. So tell everyone you've ever met (and their brother!) to tune in to tonight's season finale. And if they happen to have a Nielsen box, so much the better. We can do this. We will do this. Now go do this. — Additional reporting by Ben Katner

Save FNL campaigns are already in full swing. The biggest one is being organized by the folks over at Best Week Ever, who are urging viewers to send NBC light bulbs as a message to "Keep the Lights On."

I never watched FNL until this year...and it definitely would be a shame for it to disappear from TV. I hope it has a chance for a second life on a cable network...

I'll be watching tonight for sure.

Come on people, get a-watchin' and a-writing! Bombard the network with SNAIL mail. It can't hurt and will only cost a few bucks.

Is there anything Canadians can do?

I've told all my American friends to tune in.

I think Kristin at EOnline was trying to get ideas for a campaign to save the show. Maybe we should all be working together to mobilize something.

I hate Ben Silverman.

I am so angry. I have written two emails. I was planning to craft a letter this week. I can't believe NBC is dumping one of it's few good shows. Maybe it should go to USA .. at least the network would care for it and ratings won't be so "important." Ben Silverman should be ashamed of himself. What has he given NBC this year? Oh right. More reality crap. If FNL is gone forever, I am done with NBC.

Mike, get this man on the phone.

Michael:

Did you get my email??? I think we should send NBC night lights with the word riday printed on them...that will show them that the fans are creative (footballs are an obvious choice)

Thanks for helping us Mike! I am always glued to my TV for FNL and tonight will be no different. I will continue to try to get everyone I know to watch. Maybe we need to start a petition too?

So does anyone know of a wholesaler or where to get some nightlights in bulk for less than a buck a piece? Another idea, is to send a BOX of nightlight bulbs (where you can get the small ones in multi-packs) with one nightlight, write FRIDAY on the bulbs (loved that idea....) and a note that they could always 'leave a light on....'.

But then, would the moron get the irony?

We've got to save Friday Night Lights!!

I'm ok with FNL moving to another network and/or another time slot -- I will watch this show whenever and wherever it airs.

While we're enjoying FNL on USA or ESPN next year, Ben Silverman can bring America his new "reputation upholding shows" like MILF Island; Billionaire Yacht Racing Extreme; The International Diaper Changing Competition; Law & Order: Jurors Eating Lunch; and Celebrity Circus Singing Challenge and it's spin-off: When Circus Animals Attack C-List Celebs.

Mike, thanks as always for your support of the show!

CLEAR EYES. FULL HEARTS. CAN'T CANCEL!!

Sdanna, there is a petition here

You can also contact NBC via email through their Contact Us section, go to the "Questions not found on FAQ page about NBC Entertainment programming?" and click FNL on the drop down menu. I have been doing that since I haven't had the time to sit down and write a letter.

I hear the CW has some room on Friday nights next season - FNL could even keep the same slot.
