Scoop: Meryl Streep Cast as Shawn's Mom?! Psych!

The coveted role of James Roday's TV mom on Psych has actually gone to Chuck Lorre's BFF ex-Moonlighting P.I. Cybill Shepherd. Not nearly as exciting as Meryl Streep, but, c'mon, still a fun piece of casting.

Shepherd will appear in at least two episodes, beginning with the third-season premiere on July 18.

According to a USA insider, her character, Madeline, is a private practice psychologist who, after spending a few years abroad, returns to Santa Barbara to pay her ex-hubby (Corbin Bernsen) and son a visit and ends up helping them with a case. She's described as being a free spirit and the source of Shawn's adventurous side.

Ma Spencer was actually introduced in the final moments of the Season 2 finale when she showed up unannounced on Shawn's doorstep; viewers, however, did not see her face.

I'd have preferred Joyce Summers AKA Kristine Sutherland, but Cybil's pretty good too.

Hmmm...I'm gonna have to hold my opinion until I see the episodes. I'm not a fan of hers, but I also don't hate her. Can't wait for the new season.

I thought that Meryl Streep was kind of a stretch, but Cybil will do just fine!

I wonder, will she alter her hair color to perhaps also be the source of Sean's brown hair? Also, haven't we all gotten the impression she has been gone for a long while? Or are we going to get the not too far fetched idea that the flashbacks are of Dad's weekends with Sean and that is the real source of their not really knowing how to talk to each other and Gus having to be the mediator?

I love Cybill Shepard. She's a gifted comedienne. However, I was expecting someone Hispanic or Latina.

I think this will be great. No matter what you think of Cybil Shepard personally she is a good actress.

Just one question-will they need to borrow Moonlightings' soft-focus lens or do they have one of their own??

Interesting. I was hoping it would be someone like Joanna Kerns instead. Oh, well. It's Psych, so I'm sure it will be awesome. Thanks for the news!

JonnyM, I'm with you. I thought it should be someone Latina or Hispanic because James Roday is obviously part Hispanic and it would have made sense.

I'm also not happy because I don't like Cybill Shepard and Psych is one of my favorite shows.

Yuck.

Hope it's only for the two episodes. Hope she never comes back. Am ready to be pleasantly surprised; however, not expecting to be.

This really puts a damper on my looking forward to the show's return. ::sigh::
