Exclusive: Best. Lost. News. Ever.
Lost by Mario Perez/ABC
OK, I've left you hanging long enough, Ausholes. The scintillating piece of Lost prattle I've been holding over your heads since Ask Ausiello went live early this morning (i.e., the better-than-the-coffin-reveal scoop) goes a little something like this.... According to one of my 815 snitches, Team Darlton is in advanced talks with ABC to produce — wait for it, wait for it — an additional hour of Lost this season! [The crowd roars] Now, before you go French-kissing a total stranger out of sheer elation, my source stresses that this is by no means a done deal. In fact, the scheduling hurdles alone are enough to make a grown man cry. But you have to admit, the prospect of a 14th hour is a tantalizing one. And it raises so darn many questions. For instance:
• If the dream becomes a reality, how would it work? As it stands, Lost's Season 4 climax is slated to air on May 22 on a season-finale-themed night that also includes the cappers of Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy. So would the additional Lost hour be broadcast the following Thursday? Or would it perhaps run on another night? • What does this do to the finale that was going to air on May 22? Would elements of it be incorporated into the new finale? Would this 14th hour come before that episode? And since we were originally supposed to get 16 eppies this season before the strike cut that number back to 13, does this mean we would now be getting a season finale that is more in line with what Darlton intended? Or more exposition that they ran out of time to include? The mind boggles.
So what do you think, people? And where does the line for the 14th-hour prayer group form? I'm in.

Screw that, this is amazing news. The effects of the strike were and are bad enough that any good news is great news. Really hope this dream comes true.

Well, seeing as Team Darlton were beholden by ABC to produce 48 episodes, we're really splitting hairs between 13+19+16 or 14+18+16. Total doesn't change.
I would only be SUPER excited if they were able to throw their weight around to get the proper 2 hour season finale. LOST feels like an event and I don't like the proposed split of the finale to appease Betty and Grey's. That's weak.

My excitement depends whether the extra hour would be filler or not. I don't want an extra hour if it doesn't advance the plot.
Well, maybe if Desmond, Jin, and Sayid were all shirtless for part of it. Pretty filler would be OK in that case . . .

OMG!!! This was the last thing I was expecting to see!!! This is AWESOME news! I guess Darlton really does have pull w/the brass at ABC, if they can swing this! I hope it's true, and I agree that we should get a two-hour season finale, regardless of what this will do to UB or Grey's (which I also love but these two come a distant second compared to Lost).
Geez, I remember the days when the Lost promos where airing during the last season of Alias (I think) and I remember thinking, "Eh, I guess I'll check it out". Little did I know!

Well, in one of the post-strike interviews I had read....the plotlines that were cut from this season included storylines dealing with the Other Freighter people (i.e. not the 4 we've been introduced to)
So I guess one way they could just "splice in" an episode into season 4 would be to do an episode like "The Other 48 Days" that wasn't really a Flashback or Flashforward episode as it was a Chronological view of the 48 days that the tail section passengers went through.
Another option would be to do Rousseau's Backstory that they keep saying they want to do. Other than that, I don't know how they could possibly be leaving this on the table at this late in the game. They either would've had the utmost confidence that ABC would approve so they wrote it with the extra hour in mind anyway....or they are going to adjust already written scripts (which just seems late).
But...i don't think Team Darlton would steer us wrong! So, I'm sure they know what they're doing! I'm excited for a 14th hour this season. My big question would be...is this negotiating in ADDITION to the 3 season 48 episode order, or is it included in the 48? I remember in season 1 that they requested an extra hour for the season finale because they needed 3 hours to tell that story. I'm sure we'll be filled in soon enough.
Sorry for rambling!

The additional hour means that instead of a one-hour finale will get two hours. This is a fact because Season 1, 2 and 3 all had two hour finales and I don't think their going to break tradition.

How about Lost coming back one week earlier? So finale would still air on the same date as planned. I hope this does not bring another slow paced filler episode. I don't want another Eggtown or The Other Woman. Some serious answers please...

Paddy: but as of now the LOST 2 hour finale has been split up into 2 weeks because of Grey's anatomy and Ugly Betty airing their episodes too.
It will be great if they can negotiate back to back 2 hours...but then another show has to suffer.

Actually, this isn't really news, Darlton said this weeks ago, although this does clarify things a bit.
They said the finale would be a two hour one, but split over two weeks because of a two hour grey's finale May 22. This season will technically still have 13 episodes, and the next two seasons will still have those three missing episodes added to the originally planned 16 for each.
So two part LOST finale May 22 and 29.
