Exclusive: ABC's Cupid Takes Aim at Lauren Graham

Talk about a match made in heaven. The brilliant words of Rob Thomas. The genius delivery of Lauren Graham. Together for the first time on TV. It could be one for the ages.

Just, apparently, not these ages.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Mr. Veronica Mars recently approached Graham to play the female lead opposite Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale in ABC's forthcoming reboot of Thomas' beloved '90s dramedy Cupid.

Says RT: "I love Lauren Graham. Bobby loves Lauren Graham. We explored the possibility, but we were told it wasn't what she wanted to do right now."

Bum. Mer.

On the bright side, Graham is still very much interested in returning to TV, despite the recent dissolution of her NBC development deal. "I do want to work on television again," she tells Comcast.net from the Philadelphia set of The Dream of the Romans, a romantic comedy she's filming opposite Jeff Daniels. "It’s the steadiest job and the best writing for women.

"I would look forward to doing something where I can have a hand in the producing of the show or the direction of the show," she continues. "One of the things that I learned while I was on the Gilmore Girls is that I want the process to be collaborative."

Incidentally, despite all of my campaigning, Graham tells Comcast that she has yet to be approached about headlining NBC's Office spin-off. "I haven't heard that," she says. (Note to Ben Silverman: WTF are you waiting for?!)

Meanwhile, the search for an actress to play Paula Marshall to Cannavale's Jeremy Piven on Cupid continues. Got casting tips? Post 'em below. And feel free to reflect on what could've been had Graham responded favorably to Thomas' overture.

Lauren Graham needs a show that is fun, witty, well-paced and consistently creative. I would recommend to her the magical world of Pushing Daisies. Can you imagine her and Kristen Chenoweth? I can. It would be amazing.

no Pushing Daisies - I don't like that show and I want to see LG again lol

I think her working with Rob Thomas would be great, but I don't know if that is the right venue...

As for the right person for that part.. well if they got Amanda Peet then that leaves Office open for LG... lol

I personally think LG is all WRONG for the Office spin-off. I am a fan of both The Office and of Lauren Graham, but I just don't see her in a comedy with that vibe.

On the other hand, I think she would be perfect for a show like Cupid. Shame she passed.

Charisma Carpenter would be a great fit for Cupid.

How about Rebecca Romijn? Apparently she's leaving Ugly Betty.

How about Paula Marshall reprising her role?

What about Bonnie Somerville?

She's been floating from failed dramedies for a while a now, and needs a good home.

I still can't see Bobby Cannavale playing the Jeremy Piven role, so I have know idea who to suggest for the Paula Marshall role now. In my dreams, Ryan Reynolds plays the Jeremy Piven role, and Lauren Graham plays the Paula Marshall role. So, this is obviously one dream that won't be coming true. I am doing my best to keep an open mind though!

How great would it be if Lauren Graham showed up in Elmo as Marins long lost sister. Love to see her on MIT.

Mike, as cool as this little bit of info may be, it's just cruel to swing it in front of our faces, only to have it be batted away.
I think, though, that with Rob's pull, we'll be able to find someone as comparably amazing for the Paula Marshall role. I absolutely adored this show when it was on, and lately I've been letting the Bobby Cannavale thing set in, so I'm pretty excited for this re-boot. Rob Thomas can do very little wrong, in my book. Even the weakest season of VM was better than a lot of stuff, so bravo.

Well if not LG, how about Janel Moloney from The West Wing? She'd be great either on Cupid or The Office spin-off.

I would like to see LG in a detective drama/comedy like the old 1934 movies The Thin Man or Topper. Modern day Nick and Nora Charles or two ghosts. Since writers in Hollywood can't seem to come up with an original idea and have been remaking old movies and with LG's comedy timing I think she would be great in that kind of role. Now who would play Nick???? I would love to see her get back with SP they had the chemistry. SP did say he would love to work with her again. Any comments out there....
