Katherine Heigl Leaving Grey's? Find Out Now!
Katherine Heigl by Bob D'Amico/ABC
Maybe it's the show's impending post-strike return. Maybe it's the success of that mediocre movie with the dresses. Or maybe it's that recent National Enquirer story. Whatever the reason, rumors that Katherine Heigl's Grey's days are numbered have staged a Hillary-type resurgence this week. But does the prattle have any basis in reality?
A well-placed Seattle Grace insider, who, it should be noted, has never steered me wrong before, insists that Heigl remains "under contract" and adds that there are "no plans or discussions" for her to exit the series.
End of story. At least until the end of her next contract cycle.
Of course, Heigl wanting to leave Grey's and actually leaving Grey's are two very different things. That's not to suggest she wants to leave. Just that the two things are different. I want to be very clear about that.
All this talk about Heigl not leaving Grey's has me wondering: Could the show survive without Izzie? Gizzie, yes. But Izzie? Thoughts below please.

I'd START watching Grey's again if that mess took a hike. So over her, it's painful.

Izzie is the one I (and my two work/Grey's friends) would miss the least. Our latest Grey's discussions have become Izzie bashes, and it's becoming boring.

I like the actress and the character, but that horrible storyline just has to end.
It's so bad, you almost wonder if Shonda is pissed at Heigl and Knight and is forcing both to stay on the show and honor their contracts, but punish them by giving them both awful storylines that make the audience hate them.
Or I guess the simpler answer is that Shonda has just lost her touch. I can't really say I'd blame Heigl for wanting to leave, I bet she goes when her contract is next up, if not sooner.

Izzie used to be one of my favorite characters, but then two things happened.
First, the writers made her act so wacky in the aftermath of Denny's death -- the stupid check on the refrigerator, sitting on a bench outside the hospital all day because she couldn't go in, etc. Preposterous!
And before the touchy-feely-cumbaya crowd jumps down my throat -- YES, I get that everybody grieves differently. But silly is silly, and all of that damaged the character.
Secondly -- the fatal blow -- the George/Izzie pairing, which not only finished off any goodwill that I had toward Izzie, but also did the same for my fond feelings for George.
I have to confess that my disenchantment with Izzie might also have something to do with an increasing smugness that I'm seeing in Katherine Heigl lately.
And I believe that she has bad-mouthed Knocked Up, the huge hit movie which, let's face it, made her a viable film commodity -- at least, to the extent that she is one.
That's just poor form.
I think her self-appointed role as T.R. Knight's fierce protector during the Isaiah reign of terror went to her head a little bit. I admired it at first, but, at some point, it became dubious. Who was she really doing that for?
So, bottom line -- at this point, I wouldn't really miss Izzie that much.
Of course, I think the whole show is this close to imploding anyway, so the show might just leave her before she leaves the show.

I liked Izzie well enough back in the first season when she was tough and standing up for herself for having been a model. I was less enamored of her when she became all obsessed with Denny and cut the wire. I had started to like her well enough again in the third season when they pulled the Gizzie cr*p.
Thus, while I am not fond of her character at all now, I have faith that the situation could potentially be redeemed. (Although, with how other storylines were handled, I'm not sure how much longer I will have faith that the writing and stories can improve.)
If she left, though, I wouldn't be heartbroken. I loved Addison, and while I think the show is less after her departure, that alone wouldn't be enough to cause me to stop watching. If Addison's departure wasn't enough of a catalyst to get me to stop watching (especially with all of the other stuff going on! *shudder*), then I doubt an Izzie departure would cause me to stop.

Well, hey, Chappy Quiddick! It's good to see you out of semi TV Guide retirement! I was thinking (hoping, a little) that you would come here and disagree with me, but instead you have summed up my thoughts very precisely.
The check on the refrigerator was the beginning of the downward spiral of the character for me. The beginning of the end for the actress was actually when she corrected the pronunciation of her name at the Emmys. The way she corrected the announcer was, to my mind, ill-mannered and, well, yes...smug.
I think George is redeemable, but as far as I'm concerned Izzie can go. (I understand that the County Hospital in Chicago is always hiring...)

I actually only watched Grey's when it first premiered because of Katherine Heigl. And I continue to love the character of Izzie (even if they keep on putting her in awful storylines like the Gizzie romance). The girl's got talent! I'm still only watching these days because of her (so not a fan of the Mer/Der relationship!). So if Katie leaves, my one reason to stay with the show would be gone. That would free up a space on my DVR series schedule.

Dare I say when Keri Russell chopped off her hair on Felicity....everything changed didn't it?
Sorry Michael....But I look at hair chopping as a sign. Change is a coming!

I think that a storyline where Izzie realized she is not the great person she thinks she is, and redeems herself, would be entertaining. If we're not going to get that, then bye!

Hi, curluplw! Sorry I couldn't disagree with you!
The beginning of the end for the actress was actually when she corrected the pronunciation of her name at the Emmys. - curluplw
YES! I forgot about that! You're right -- that didn't sit too well with me either. She was not big enough to get away with that yet.
George probably is redeemable, but they need to get him far away from Izzie AND Callie -- anything that reminds viewers of that whole god-awful storyline.
And bring back a little of the goofy, unsure George -- stop trying to turn him into Tad the Cad from All My Children.

It's funny because I remember during the first season or two it felt like Izzy WAS upstaging Meredith, she was feisty and had been through just as much. The scene of Alex picking her up when she was in the prom gown is my all time favorite Grey's moment.
I feel bad for Katherine. It's like the writers willfully destroyed all the fans goodwill towards her with the Gizzie storyline.
I like her and Alex. And I think she's an amazing actress, her grief scenes are fantastic. I admire her for standing up for TR Knight and speaking out when she said she also was not a Gizzie fan.
