Exclusive: Fox Cuts Short Sherman-Palladino's Return

The Return of Jezebel James by Michael Lavine/Fox
That was quick.

Fox has closed the book on Amy Sherman-Palladino's post-Gilmore Girls comeback vehicle, The Return of Jezebel James, after three abysmally rated outings. A Fox spokesperson confirms that the comedy starring Parker Posey and Lauren Ambrose as unlikely sisters has aired its last episode.

OK, time for some Monday afternoon quarterbacking: Who deserves the blame here? AS-P? Fox for burying it on Friday night? The person in charge of integrating that horrible laugh track? Posey for failing to be, well, Lauren Graham? Post your theories below.

Talented individuals. Mediocre idea. Awful execution. Cancellation destiny fulfilled.

The talent behind this was astronomical, but it was TERRIBLY executed. The cast tried TOO hard to be funny. Its as if they had no faith in AS-P's writing (which wasn't all that bad) to sell the characters. Lauren Ambrose was SUPER eccentric, and Parker Posey was SUPER neurotic and yet kind (the combo didn't work for me). Dianne Weist was pretty great, I thought, definitely the highlight of the second (and most forgettable) episode. The laugh track, though, was completely inappropriate, and why AS-P or even DP would let that happen or even suggest the idea is beyond me. The traditional sitcom is all but extinct (save for CBS); please don't try and resurrect it, ESPECIALLY if your name is Amy Sherman-Palladino.
So, while I'm bummed Parker didn't shine like I'd hoped, or that the show didn't take off like GG did, I do look forward to what AS-P has up her sleeves next, television-wise....

What's your opinion, Michael? I've been curious to hear your take on the show in the last few podcasts but you were either MIA or there was no podcast at all. I hope you'll address it in the next one!

Now AS-P can go back to writing the Gilmore Girls reunion movie.

Now I don't have to decide between suffering through an awful show out of loyalty or feeling guilty for tuning out...

I TOTALLY DISAGREE with this move it should be UNHITCHED canceled I can not stand that show its not funny at all. If I was at Fox I would of tried it around American Idol just like Samantha Who got a boost from Dancing with the stars. I for one am disappointed maybe another network will pick up this show its alot better than the other comedies right now except for the CBS Monday night.

I'm surprise that ASP didn't have enough clout to get a better time slot and at least an 8 episode run. I thought it had possibilities. Constantly comparing ASP's work to the Gilmore Girls is an exercise in futility.

My sentiments exactly.

No surprise here. The show was awful and painful to watch. Better luck on your next project, ASP.

"Now AS-P can go back to writing the Gilmore Girls reunion movie."

Sounds like you were reading my mind.
Sucks for AS-P that it got canceled, but maybe this will be just the initiative to get her seriously thinking about a GG movie. I mean, that's almost a guaranteed success.

I blame Fox. I'd only recently even noticed that the show was on.

When I saw the ad for this show it was immediately clear that the creator(s) made the mistake of thinking I could for one second suspend my disbelief that these two actresses are sisters. Noooo way. As a Gilmore fan, that's why I never even considered watching. Could casting directors please TRY to make "siblings" look alike? It would do you well.

Yet another example of how in these times a show needs to get an audience immediately or it'll get the hook.
Bullsh-t...
