My Big Problem(s) With This Week's Lost

Lost by Mario Perez/ABC
Don't get me wrong, tonight's Lost was 31 flavors of awesome. Loved the introduction of the Four Rescueteers. Ditto the actors portraying them. And any episode that lets Juliet save the day is a keeper in my book. Unfortunately, in this instance, the negatives (two, to be exact) outweighed the positives — if for no other reason than they were so unnecessary. And those negatives were…

1) Did everyone suddenly forget that Charlie just croaked? I mean, Claire just learned of his death at the end of the previous episode, and there was nothing in her expression or demeanor to indicate that she had any lingering sorrow. Sure, she briefly broke down in the previous episode, but that's it? One good cry? That's all Charlie gets? At one point tonight I actually caught Claire smiling and giggling while cradling little Aaron! Either she never really give a crap about Charlie or she's in some serious Britney Spears-type denial. Either way, it left a really bad taste in my mouth. But not nearly as bad as this next one….

2) Early in the episode, Faraday drops a bombshell, telling Jack and Kate, "Rescuing you and your people? Can't really say it's our primary objective." Jack quickly follows that with a, "What is?", but before Faraday can answer, the moment is interrupted by Miles' call and Jack drops the entire line of questioning. Fine. I get that there are other things going on. But I don't get that it took Jack (and Kate) almost the entire episode to finally press him for an answer to the $1 million question. I mean, they had a freakin' gun to his head, but they never thought to ask, "Hey, by the way, what is your primary reason for being here?" Kind of an important question, you know? I get that the producers wanted to save that doozy of a reveal until the episode's closing minutes, but surely there had to have been a way to do it that didn't compromise the intelligence of two of the show's smartest characters.

Feel free to use the comments section below to agree or disagree with me. I have a hunch you'll do the latter, which is fine. I won't take it personally.

What was the cockpit doing in the ocean? Did the pilot not get sucked out of the cockpit on land? Am I daft?

they're trekking through the jungle trying to avoid the creepy freighties, while wondering if they missed a chance at rescue. with a bloody hostage tied behind them. who got his hands on a gun and used it. i think she's just tired and in shock right now. i'm not hating on claire for the lack o' grieving just yet.

I figured the problem would be something like Karl using a Nalgene bottle before they became super popular. I didn't expect your problem to be with their emotions.

Plus, when you think about it, they've lost several people already, and I think they didn't grieve those people as much.

Man, I liked Charlie and all, but I cannot consider that a continuity gaffe. As upset as Hurley and Claire were, I'm sure in some way they were prepared for the possibility that he might not come back.

I mean, you're entitled to your opinion and all, but calling it a continuity gaffe is a bit much, I think.

The continuity gap was within the first 30 minutes when they showed a shot of Ben, and the lump on his lip was on the opposite side of where it had been.

But you're worried about Claire's lack of crying?

Egads.

Please tell me you are not falling into the "let's look for anything to bitch about on Lost" camp, when the show is mostly perfect.

These people are in survival mode. They do not have time to grieve. And frankly, are probably getting somewhat used to death by now.

Weak, I'm disappointed.

Fateiswhatyoumake: That wasn't the real cockpit. The was the whole point. The pilot of the helicopter called in the tipline to say that the body they showed on television wasn't really the pilot because he wasn't wearing his wedding ring. The pieces of the plane are on the island, not around Bali.

Didn't Ben show them last year that no one was looking for them because everyone thought they were dead? Or am I remembering wrong?

Keeping composure in front of your child amidst all this is a continuity error? Are you serious?

Melodrama is not LOST's thing.. especially since their relationship never got past the puppy love stage...

Yeah--include me in the relieved column. Mike, you're kinda nuts on this one. Really excellent episode, with no room for histrionics. And you don't think even a grieving mother can be brought to a smile by the sight of their newborn baby--you must not have been around many new mothers. An even better episode than the premiere, if thats possible.

Again, i feel, like Dominique, that they were mighty busy, and again, who cares... question got asked and answered, how many times does that happen in an episode of Lost? Count your blessings Michael.
