Top 9 Power Rankings: David Cook's a Thriller

David Cook by Frank Micelotta/Fox
This could become like a ping-pong match, folks. The lead in TVGuide.com's Idol Power Rankings changed again this week, as Davids Cook and Archuleta traded places. Fueled by his show-stopping delivery of "Billie Jean," Cook commanded 48.1 percent of our readers' votes, while Archuleta slid back to a mere 18.7 percent. But has a third horse entered this race? Making significant strides this week was Michael Johns, who at No. 3 hit his highest spot in a month.

Among the ladies, it's BAU, with Brooke and Carly at Nos. 4 and 5, and KLC, Ramiele and Syesha occupying the bottom three spaces.

Top 9 Idol Power Rankings
48.1% David Cook
18.7% David Archuleta
11.1% Michael Johns
9.2% Brooke White
6.1% Carly Smithson
4.2% Jason Castro (his lowest ranking to date)
1.1% Kristy Lee Cook
0.8% Ramiele Malubay
0.6% Syesha Mercado

Syesha has finished last or next to last for the past four weeks; is her time about to finally run out?

I have just one comment on the way that you word the polls -- you don't ask us who we want to win, you ask us who we think will win. For example, I want Brooke to win but that's not what you're asking, so if I follow your wording I'd vote for David Cook in this poll as well because I think he's got a very good chance right now.

Do you think David A. had such a low vote this week due to the fact nobody had any idea what song he was singing? Even the judges were baffled! Bad choice on his part. Personally, I am a Brooke fan. =) But I like David Cook well enough.

I want David Cook to win and I think David Cook will win. After 7 seasons, I think we need an Idol that is more original and willing to take risks. I think David A is a great singer, but I also think he may have peaked a bit too soon and I am kinda over him. He'll be a success after the show, but I think Simon called the winner way too early. It's all about the David Cook for me. I like Michael as well. As long as he can sing Queen, he'll be fine.

I was not surprised to see Eze voted out. I thought the worst performance was Ramielle, but the least memorable for me were Eze, Sayesha, and Jason. Yes, Sayesha can sing... but is she better than some of the others who have gone before? Yes, Eze has a cool R&B voice. However, is he better than Reuben, let alone Luthor Vandross? None of the first four had been improving, in my mind.

Kristy Lee, on the other hand, gave her best performance of the season. I thought it was the best song choice of the night and she only missed a couple of notes. Her tone, when singing in her comfort zone (does she need more time to get comfortable?) is good and she is attractive (marketable). I also think she was more comfortable, which allowed her to smile and I was happy for her as she received positive (jumping and turning after Simon's) feedback.

David Archuletta and David Cook seem to be the top candidates right now. Given Daughtry's performance, I doubt David Cook would mind following in his footsteps (I prefer David Cook's vocals, but Daughtry had better appearance and charisma/stage presence). I like Carly's vocals the best, but she does not connect well with everyone. I think Brooke may have the most limited range, (which did not stop Taylor Hicks from "winning") but she exudes sunshine and charisma and her tone within her range is very nice.

It kills me that David Cook has "wowed" the audience with 3 weeks of re-arrangements that other acts had done. Covering a cover is for Vegas acts. In any event, it's pretty clear who the Top 5 will be. I just hope Michael Johns doesn't manage to fool anyone for much longer. If he's not doing an impression of Morrison or Mercury, he blows.

Why does everyone make abig deal about David 'covering' a previously recorded song? ALL the songs have been hits for other people so why the hatin' on David?

The big deal is that David is being hailed this season as the "fresh" and "original" contestant. However, he's simply taking "rock" covers of well-known pop songs and presenting them to a larger audience. Yes, he is crediting the covering artist, but the judges insist on labeling him as "original," much like they did Blake and his 1980's beatboxing. Just because you've never heard the cover doesn't make it fresh. His ability to innovate or reinvent is untested, so calling him original is a farce. (And given his poor skill on the guitar, I've got my doubts.) So far, he's just giving us faux-emo karaoke and the masses are eating it up.

As someone who has heard most of the "original covers" that David Cook has sang, I think he has done a fantastic job. He's giving credit to the artists and you can tell he's a true rock fan. AND the original artists to cover the songs are liking his renditions. If I can continue to hear the performances he is putting out, then keep those cover songs coming!

I would love to hear him sing Pearl Jam, he has the voice for it.

Michael Johns made significant strides with me, too, lol. Justin Guarini is still the best, though, so KEEP HIM.

Glad to see Cook still in the top spot, but Archie should be much lower. And if Syesha or Ramiele don't get tossed out this week,it will be obvious that people are not voting for SINGING talent.

Hey Furby0001, I'm with you! I loved Justin Guarini!. He was the best. What a voice. good looking. I never understood why he was not more successful. I think him being the first season that AI was not prepared to market a runner up, only a winner. Later on they realized (w/ Clay) that they can have more than one "winner"...The best idols in my book have not been the winners...Justin G., Bo Bice, Constantine and now David Cook. Hopefully David can break my non winning favorite spell!!!!!!

David Cook and Brooke White should be the final two. They are by far the most talented of the bunch and would sell the most albums.

crankycoyote: wow. you are cranky. since when has AI been about the most talented?

like simon said. this is a popularity contest. not a talent contest.
