Episode Recap: Jump

Hi- Lauren here filling in for this drama-filled, cliff-hanger-laden, surprising finale!

The show opens with a flashback scene to 1999. Lilo’s 30 second guest appearance is the role she was born to play. In gym class Lindsay, the “mean girl,” chooses Betty for her team only to use her as a human dodgeball shield.

Back in present day, Gio and Betty are discussing Betty’s aversion to sports and their new relationship. Betty wants to take things slow. They notice Betty’s article is finally out- but to their dismay- it's not only small, but completely rewritten. Betty confronts Claire who tells her she needs to stop playing it safe in work and life and needs to take more risks- which becomes the undoubted theme of the show. When asked what she wants- Betty reveals that she wants to be Claire- own a magazine and reach people in a powerful way. Is this some type of foreshadowing?

Meanwhile on the Daniel/Alexis front, a clearly overworked Daniel blames Alexis for bringing Wilhelmina back into the company. Later, Daniel, Alexis and Wilhelmina present to a high profile advertising client where Daniel confuses the client with numbers and graphs. Wilhelmina steps in like an old pro and woos the client with a charity softball game. Daniel is understandably upset and resentful.

Gio and Betty take a quick break from work to brush up on her softball skills and Gio surprises Betty by asking her to go with him on a first date to Rome. Pinned to the ground by him in the park, Betty excitedly says yes (kinda hard to say no), but we all know it’s not that simple…

Back at the office a random, mysterious French boy roams around looking for Daniel. As if things couldn’t get worse, we come to find out that he is Daniel’s illegitimate child- and his mother was a French model from his past that recently died! A plot we’ve seen before, yes, but on Ugly Betty it’s sure to be taken to a new level. Daniel immediately thinks it’s another Wilhelmina scheme and confronts her. Turns out it’s not, but Wilhelmina will obviously use it to her advantage anyway.

Betty returns home to talk to her father and Hilda about Gio when Henry shows up unexpectedly and proposes! He has a job waiting for her back in Tucson. Kinda out of left field, but it forces Betty to make one of the biggest decisions of her love life- and makes for a great finale.

The media gets hold of the news of Daniel’s “bastard” with the help of Wilhelmina, and the big advertising client threatens to pull out. Alexis decides Daniel needs to take a leave of absence in order to get the advertiser back and Daniel feels incredibly betrayed. He later has an epiphany and realizes the French boy is his, offers Betty an all expense paid trip to Rome and reminds her for the millionth time how he couldn’t survive without her- all in the same scene! Is it just me or is the show moving closer and closer to a relationship between Daniel and Betty?

In a side story- Hilda decides to move her relationship with Coach Diaz forward. All seems like it’s going well- he even gives her a beautiful necklace- until he reveals he’s actually married and torn between her and his on and off again wife. Hilda just can't catch a break.

At the charity softball game- both teams clad with metallic uniforms, short skirts and high-heeled cleats- Betty avoids Gio and Henry shows up once again. The two men find out about their separate proposals, putting pressure on Betty to make a decision- and soon.

After Daniel’s alleged son points out Marc, it dawns on Daniel that Wilhelmina was the one who leaked the story to the press. When he confronts her about it she swiftly tells him, in true Wilhelmina fashion, that she is now editor-in-chief and Daniel is out. Alexis confirms that he will no longer be head of Mode. Daniel walks off with his son.

Naomi Campbell’s montage during her runway walk to the plate, the reference to her infamous cell-phone assault and power-house hit to Betty was the perfect setup for her to be knocked out with the ball and thrown into a dream sequence where she is forced to choose between Gio and Henry. Betty awakes knowing exactly what to do.

The season ends with Wilhelmina and Alexis celebrating their softball win (and new partnership), Daniel packing up his office with his alleged son, and Hilda kissing the married Coach Diaz. Betty packs her suitcase and says good bye to her family- but we don’t know who she choses (did anyone else notice she’s not wearing the engagement ring??).

Amongst all the drama- favorite moment goes to notorious scene-stealers Amanda and Marc for the expertly crafted softball taunt that managed to rhyme 'Elle', 'smell' and 'hell.'

So who do you think Betty will pick? Gio? Henry? Neither? Will she ditch them both and start a bold new career? Do you think Daniel’s son is really his? What did you think of the finale- did it live up to all the hype??

Loved it - truthfully I hope that Betty chooses Gio. I have wondered about a romance between Daniel and Betty from time to time but I think that story line can wait awhile. Both characters need to grow a bit more before they are ready for each other if the writers decide to go that way. Loved Wilhelmina tonight - she was on top of her game. Especially loved the line when she told Daniel that she was playing chess but he was playing checkers.

oh, man, i tuned five minutes after the show started and i missed lohan

wasn't heidi klum supposed to make an appearance? did i miss her as well?

scenes of mark and amanda always makes me smile, and their cheer was fabulous

i'm willing to give Daniel's b@st@rd storyline a chance, but it's definitely not a fun story to follow right now

they got eddie cibrian shirtless for no apparent reason...nice!

it doesn't make sense for betty to choose to go to spain with gio, just because she's suppose to love henry more.

but if she went with henry to tucson, next season the writers would have to make some convoluted way to get her back to Mode, otherwise, there would be no show

but i believe the 'jump' and taking a risk is her moving out of the house and living by herself

all speculations of course, we'll see what happens comes fall

Okay, totally love/liked the episode. UB has been getting better each episode since their return from the writer's strike.

I am totally a Betty/Henry shipper, but I do realize that they will not end up happy together for quite some time. It doesn't make any sense for her to pack up and move her life when his is still in so much disarray. But since Betty and Henry should/will end up together (and since networks love C. Gorham, as do I), I think that Henry will reemerge in New York for Betty after some time. Charlie will have flaked out and he'll have gotten down the parenting thing, and now he is free to be with Betty, wherever she wants to be. Of course he'd return at a pivotal moment in Betty's relationship at the time (be it Gio or someone else).

As for Gio... He's a nice guy. Betty would only attract nice guys. And I think he's a good progression for Betty, but he's just not Henry. I understand he doesn't have the baby mama drama, but we barely know him. Everyone who has abandoned Betty/Henry for Betty/Gio doesn't see the underlying character/plot progression. We started with an adorable, dependable, sweet, secure Henry and that's why everyone fell in love with him and them. When they introduced Charlie's pregnancy, they used Henry's great qualities to show their flip side. Because Henry is so dependable and a stand-up guy, he would never be able to abandon his son. Gio looks so appealing now because all we've see is the fun, exciting, drama-free Gio. The show hasn't shown the flip side to his good qualities. Maybe his good qualities leave him prone to be flaky, who knows yet?? So stop abandoning Betty and Henry!

As for the beginning of next season, Betty will be traveling alone, be it Italy or Spain or China. She's going to forge ahead alone and have her own wacky adventures. It's too quick for Betty to go into another relationship. She needs to be funny single, dating Betty, especially now that she is more confident. So I am totally excited to see single Betty, maybe a relationship with Gio, but definitely a happy ending for Betty and Henry!!

XOXO

Wasn't there an interview on this site not too long ago saying that America Ferrera and Eric Mabius have said they'd never go along with a Betty/Daniel romance? And I remember once reading that Salma Hayek said she'd never put Daniel and Betty together.

Like Betty, I too want to know why Daniel Jr. was wearing eyeliner.

And were those Elle players on the softball team Elle staffers in real life?

I hope Daniel and Betty cook up their own spectacular magazine launch. Betty can't be a glorified assistant forever.

Was a pretty good way to end the season. Personally I think Betty chose neither one of them. I think Daniel is taking Daniel Jr. back to Paris and Betty is going with him to get away for a bit. As much as I liked Henry at first (before the whole baby thing), now I really dislike the character and would prefer them to just write him out completely.

Like Betty, I too want to know why Daniel Jr. was wearing eyeliner.

I thought he had makeup on because Amanda put it on him. She said something to the fact that she wanted to dress him up or something when he first came to the desk asking for Daniel.

I hope Betty chose Gio.

I was appalled when Hilda went back and kissed the coach. He is married! It seems out of character with her.

Henry began as a great character, and then they ruined him. Maybe it was a consequence of the strike, maybe not, but he should stay with his new family.

I hope that next season Alexis finds out that Wilhemina stole the sperm, and then comes crawling back to Daniel to beg him to take over the magazine. I get it that business is business, but her disloyalty is very disturbing.

Maybe next season Betty's father will get a love interest. I hope so!

Where in the world is Cliff? I love to watch David Blue playing that role! I hope they bring him back soon!

Is it just me or is the show moving closer and closer to a relationship between Daniel and Betty?

First, Lauren, I'd like to comment on the statement above. And the answer is NO! I think you've completely missed the point of this relationship. The FRIENDSHIP between Daniel and Betty is the heart of this show. To think that they will somehow end up in a romantic relationship is crazy, and I seriously doubt the writers would ever go there.

The episode was great! LOVED L.L. as the mean girl...she was great.

I think Betty sets off on an adventure, by herself. I think she realized that both men have tried to control her or push her in one direction or another. I think we will see a much more independent Betty next season.

Lots of Madonna music last night - She's Not Me and Candy Shop during the softball game, and Jump at the end fitting in perfectly with the theme of the episode.

I'm hoping for Gio, which I think is funny because when Betty was with her first boyfriend (I can't even remember his name) I was cheering for her to move on to Henry. Henry's sweet and everything, but I think I prefer Gio because he's the sort of guy I'd prefer for myself - he challenges Betty and doesn't let her sit around feeling sorry for herself.

Was this episode sponsored by Madonna? Pretty much all of the background music was from her new album (except for Jump which was from her last album).

I think Betty is taking a solo vacation and when she comes back, I hope she chooses Gio. I used to like Henry until he became a father ...

I also was disappointed that Lindesy Lohan was only in for 30 seconds. With all the hype, I thought for sure she would have more screen time. Isn't she supposed to be in a few episodes next season?

I'm having flashbacks to 90210's Kelly-Dylan-Brandon triangle -- which had almost the same set up: 1 guy proposing European trip [Gio/Dylan] and the other proposing marriage [Henry/Brandon]. And I have a feeling, that like Kelly, Betty is going to go the "I choose me" route.

Not sure how I feel about that. Always loved Henry, but Gio is winning me over. I kinda want her to pick someone, not even sure if I care which one now!

Oh yeah, also flashback to Felicity, trying to pick between road trip with Ben or Germany with Noel. I remember being on pins and needles during the hiatus!!

I hope Betty chooses Gio. I like Henry but common he has a son now and needs to get realistic. I can't wait for UB to return.

Team Gio!

I also agree with LPDB above - No way should the writers ever explore a romance with Daniel and Betty! Their friendship, along with Betty's family interactions, is a key to the show's success! If that ever happened, I think I'd be done with the show. No amount of character growth would make that storyline real for me.

Love Hilda and Coach.

Interesting development with Daniel and a son.

Did I say Team Gio? I love Gio!
