Stargate Atlantis: Your Burning Questions Answered!
Joe Flanigan and Jason Momoa by Eike Schroter/Sci Fi Channel
With the July 11 Season 5 premiere of Sci Fi Channel's Stargate Atlantis just a week-and-a-half away, we thought it a good time to reveal exec producer Joseph Mallozzi's answers to many of your questions posted to the TVGuide.com Asks blog. Will Lt. Ford return? Is a new alien race on the horizon? Will the Midway station be rebuilt? Read on for those answers and more.
I'd like to know if there is any chance of seeing another hot Sheppard/Teyla kiss. And will these two get together romantically ? – TheUnitLover Joseph Mallozzi: Romance blossoms in Season 5 of Atlantis but, alas, not between Sheppard and Teyla. Last we left our favorite Athosian back in Season 4, she had a man in her life — or, more accurately, a half-man half-iratus bug with very conflicted feelings.
My question is about Lt. Ford from the beginning of the series. I enjoyed his character and was wondering if they will ever do a show where he is located and maybe healed, or should we assume he is gone for good? — rlsbridges Mallozzi: We have no plans to revisit the Ford storyline this season. For the time being, consider him "MIA." But the Pegasus Galaxy is a big place....
What are the prospects of more SG-1 characters appearing in Atlantis? — ImaDigitalSpy Mallozzi: Well, as you may or may not be aware, Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) will be swinging by for the show's mid-season two-parter. Also, schedule permitting, we would love to have Colonel Carter (Amanda Tapping) put in an appearance for the show's 100th episode (our Season 5 finale).
Who exactly are they trying to hook Dr. Keller up with? In "Quarantine," she kissed Ronan, but after "Trio" it looked like she was interested in McKay. – Charissa Mallozzi: Who indeed! On the one hand, "Quarantine" certainly suggested a possible spark between Keller and Ronon; on the other hand, "Trio" and "Last Man" seem to suggest chemistry between Keller and Rodney. Looks like we’re headed toward an interesting little love triangle....
Will Connor Trineer be back as Michael Kenmore (he should be, to fill in the details of the finale), and if so, for how many episodes? Are you planning on doing anything more with Wraith ally Todd (Brendan penny) than just a recurring character? – ScottRevels Mallozzi: Doing more with Todd than just a recurring character? You mean, are we planning to make him part of the team? Nope. Todd, like Michael, works best as a recurring player. We have interesting plans for both. Watch for Michael to put in an appearance or two in Season 5, and expect to see Todd in at least five episodes this upcoming season.
I read an article few days ago that said Season 5 will have a new powerful race. My questions are: 1) Is that true? 2) If it's true, is the race all new, never appeared before? 3) Which episode they will show up? 4) Are they as recurring role or just a one time thing? – jjit Mallozzi: 1) There will be a new player in the Pegasus Galaxy. 2) No comment. 3) They will show up in our mid-season two-parter. 4) They have the potential to be recurring.
There was a lot of emphasis on Sheppard and McKay's friendship last season, which I'm not complaining about — those two are the reason I watch the show. Are they going to continue that trend, or are they going to try to put some distance between them this next season with all the rumored emphasis on romance? – kaydee Mallozzi: I feel that the friendships between all the members of the Atlantis team are an important part of the show. That said, we’ll be exploring many of these relationships over the course of the show's fifth season: Ronon-Rodney, Sheppard-Teyla, Sheppard-Ronon, to name but a few.
Will there be more stability with the cast? I feel that over the last two seasons it keeps changing drastically. – tfbeachgirl Mallozzi: We have our established cast for Season 5 but the realities of television make it impossible to make predictions beyond the finale.
Will we ever see Weir or Evil Weir at some point? And why was Weir taken off in the first place? Was it to make room for Sam? Any new big bads this season? – DerFel85 Mallozzi: The decision to make Samantha Carter the new base commander in Season 4 was in no way related to the decision made with regard to the Elizabeth Weir character. The fact that we’ve brought in Richard Woolsey to take over the position in Season 5 makes that pretty clear.
Are we going to see more of McKay's sister in this upcoming season? How many Earth-based episodes? — QuinnMallory Mallozzi: Yes, we will see McKay’s sister in Season 5. Watch for Jeannie Miller to pay her brother a visit in The Shrine. Also, expect about two-and-a-half Earth-based episodes this season.
Will Jewel Staite (Dr. Keller) become a series regular and appear in the opening credits? – djariya Mallozzi: Yes, she will.
Are Ronan and McKay ever going to find out that they are both interested in Dr Keller? – KitanaKat Mallozzi: They will.
Are the IOA's powers that be going to rebuild the Midway Station? – Jena Mallozzi: Not anytime soon. After the events of Midway, they’re having second thoughts. For now, Atlantis will have to rely on the two-and-a-half week ship-bound journey between galaxies.
Please say it's not true, that the 100th episode is going to take place in Las Vegas? Why can't the 100th episode be in the Pegasus Galaxy instead of Earth? — snerkle Mallozzi: We’ve yet to break the 100th episode. However, in our initial spinning, we have discussed the possibility of having the best of both worlds — or galaxies, as the case may be.
I want to know if Teyla's baby is going the way of Vala's and will be evil. Please say no.... — autumnalmighty Mallozzi: OK. No.
Will Teyla come back for a full season? I understand that the writers gave her character a short/limited appearance on SGA because of her pregnancy. – cyr1988 Mallozzi: We’ll definitely be seeing more of Teyla in Season 5 as she attempts to balance motherhood and her off-world wraith-killing commitments.
Are we going to see more of Rodney's past this year? — highonstargate Mallozzi: Indeed we will, in a late Season 5 episode in which he’ll be reunited with an old friend and rival. We’re casting this one as I answer this question and, if all goes as planned, it will offer up some fun cameos.
I hear Carson Beckett will be making a few appearances — is this true? After McKay and Sheppard, his character was one of my favorites. He had depth, was relatable, and genuinely funny. — SmashingSilent Mallozzi: Yes. Paul McGillion will be reprising the role of Dr. Carson Beckett in five glorious episodes this upcoming season.
What is the No. 1 decision you have come to regret as show runner of Atlantis? Do you wish you could take back removing Elizabeth Weir/Torri Higginson from the main cast? – reiko_afterglow Mallozzi: No. So far, no regrets. I was very happy with Season 4 and hope Season 5 proves just as satisfying and full of surprises.

Thanks for answering my question! I really didn't expect it to be picked. I really hoped that Todd would become the Wraith version of Major Lorne. Teetering on team member, but not a team member. Also with the rumors that Jason Momoa potentially leaving the show, I figured why not just switch it up..
If Todd didn't replace Ronon, then maybe Lorne?

First, my condolences to the family of Don S. Davis who died Sunday. Mr Davis played General Hammond on the first 7 seasons of Stargate: SG-1 and made occasional appearances on SG-1 and Atlantis from time to time and will appear in the SG-1 DVD coming out in July. Next, I really hope that this season is the best yet. Atlantis started off kinda meh for me, but it has grown every year. I still don't like having changed doctors, although I do like Jewel Staite and her character. I also wish they would have been able to convince Michael Shanks to reprise his role as Daniel Jackson and have made him the new leader of Atlantis. Daniel always made the most sense because of his knowledge and understanding of the Ancients.

Wow... I am very psyched now for Season 5... and even hopeful that this energy leads to an early pick up for season 6....
On the other hand... I too am saddened to hear about Don S. Davis, in fact I didn't know he passed until I read the comment above. A little shocked that TVGuide didn't have something posted about him

They dumped a favorite character in Beckett (Paul McGillion) and brought in "mary sue" (save me! save me!) Keller for a love triangle. Made of squick! I loved Jewel Staite in "Firefly" but she is absolutely terrible on this show.
As for that smoking hot "kiss" between Sheppard and Teyla, a lot of viewers felt that came across as potential rape and it was quite upsetting. For the writers to consider that scene "romantic" shows just how they feel about women in general. Dumping Torri Higginson when she complained about how the writers were dealing with her character just confirms that these guys are living out frat boy fantasies instead of pumping out good science fiction.

I didn't know about Mr. Davis either until I read the above comment. I've been a fan of Atlantis since the beginning of the third season; a friend of mine introduced me to the show and I immediately fell in love. I have since purchased all three seasons on DVD (pre-ordered the fourth) and downloaded a few favorites onto my video iPod. A couple of months ago, I decided to purchase the SG1 series in total and am slowly making my way through the episodes. General Hammond was a wonderful character and I am so sad to hear that the actor had passed away. I hope they somehow honor his memory on the show.
I am so looking forward to the start of the fifth season of Atlantis. I'm especially excited to see the return of Carson, who quickly became my favorite. I refused to watch "Sunday" when it was broadcast because I had been spoiled and knew what was going to happen. I finally watched it months later and even though Beckett died, I think it was brilliantly written and acted.

Thanks Joe for answering questions. It's much different reading straight-forward answers here I'm very excited about S5 starting and have avoided all spoilers from the leaked season premiere! I'm eager to see how the team gets out from the season 4 finale mess.

Since TVGuide has been remiss in reporting the significant news that Don S. Davis has died, please feel free to visit http://www.gateworld.net/news/2008/06/don_s._davis_1942-2008.shtml
for a tribute and more information.
(Oh and on another note, Atlantis would be a MUCH better show if they would get rid of the Wraith.I get so tired of Wraith and Replicator or Genii stories. They are in a whole new galaxy. Surely there are more races and villains out there... Ronon and Teyla are also extremely tiresome and the show would be enhanced without these token aliens.)

Thank you all for the sad heads-up on Don S. Davis. I comb dozens of mainstream (U.S.) news sites each and every morning, and this had yet to turn up on my radar.
I have posted an item to the Today's News blog. - MWM

Thanks! Can't wait for the new season to begin.
For the writers to consider that scene "romantic" shows just how they feel about women in general.
Are you basing this on comments seen elsewhere? Because the "hot kiss" was part of the fan question, not the response.
Oh and on another note, Atlantis would be a MUCH better show if they would get rid of the Wraith.
Are you kidding me? After Reavers, the Wraith are the best supervillains scifi has ever dreamed up. But if that's not your cup of tea, he did say there is a new player in the galaxy.

That's what you get for not checking into the BFZ, Matt. We're on top of these things over there. I heard the sad news yesterday. My thoughts are with his family.

I can't believe TVGuide let Mallozzi babble on about his love triangles on SGA, (that made me reach for the Rolaids) while a true television science fiction icon, Don S. Davis has passed away. Shame on you!
The loss of Torri Higginson and Paul McGillion completely ruined SGA for me last year, and with the outcry allowing McGillion to return, the measly 5 episodes he is getting isn't worth sitting through 20 episodes of crybaby Keller (Jewel Staite) and all the men folk fighting over her. Sounds more like Desperate Housewives than good scifi.
BTW - for a previous poster, the Reavers were the villians on "Firefly", not SGA. And they truly were frightening, unlike the comic book Wraith on SGA.

I haven't watched Atlantis since they booted Torri Higginson from the show. After reading Mazzolli's replies to these fan questions, I made a good decision. If you want to watch good Sci-Fi that knows how to write strong female characters, watch Battlestar Galactica.

I am saddened to hear of the loss of Don S. Davis. I enjoyed him as Hammond on SG1 and felt a great void after he left. My condolences to his family. On a side note I cannot believe a question of mine was answered. Thank you. I think they need to take more time this year and develop ALL their characters.
