Smallville: Clark Kent’s Not-So-Wonderful Life

On Thursday's episode of Smallville (8 pm/ET, The CW), Clark Kent (Tom Welling) gets a look at what life would have been like if his rocket ship never arrived on Earth. Brainiac (James Marsters), last seen zooming away with Clark's Krypto-cousin Kara (Laura Vandervoort), is trying to set such a Kal-El-free scenario in motion. Clark, having a bit of a pity party over Lana's continued zombieness, isn't so sure that's such a bad idea. "Since the day I arrived, all I've brought is suffering and death," he says. "Meteor freaks, phantoms, Brainiac. If I'd never reached Earth, none of them would've ever been here."

Right on cue, his own version of It's a Wonderful Life plays out thanks to his Kryptonian dad Jor-El, who enables him to see what a non-Clark world would be like. And let's just say it's not a pretty picture. Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) is president of the United States, with Milton Fine — aka Brainiac — as his chief of staff. And their plan to consolidate power won't have a happy ending for the human race. (Hint: the episode's title is "Apocalypse.")

The episode — directed by Welling — is the series 150th and also has a few Easter Eggs:

• In the alternate reality Chloe (Allison Mack) is engaged to a guy named George Dean — a shout out to previous TV Supermen George Reeves and Dean Cain.

• Likewise, Kara — running the Department of Domestic Security for President Lex — is going by the name Linda Danvers, which was once Supergirl's secret identity in the comics.

• Clark is present in the fantasy sequence (nobody knows who he is and they're all too busy to really press the issue) and his first meeting with Lois Lane (Eric Durance) is a sweet homage to Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder's meet cute-and-clumsy from Superman: The Movie. Lois is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and she works with Clark to expose Lex's big plan. There are lots of hints at their future romantic relationship. Says executive producer Al Gough: "This just proves that that no matter what the reality is, Clark and Lois are ultimately destined to be together." — Rich Sands

I cannot wait for this episode tonight! I find it extremely interesting that all the episodes Tom Welling directs are very heavy on the Lois and Clark interaction.

"Fragile" (Season 5) was Tom's first shot at directing and had quite a bit of Clark and Lois interacting with each other and the little girl. "Hydro" (Season 6) was Lois and Clark's first kiss. Now "Apocalypse" sounds like it will it have Tom's own interpretation of the future Lois and Clark romance.

I don't know if the actors get to pick the episodes they direct, but I for one think Tom himself is definitely ready for Clark to move on past his Lana angst.

SVFan7337: "I cannot wait for this episode tonight!"

Neither can I! I'm sooo stoked. Tom Welling looked sooo adorable in those oversized glasses!

Is this the season finale?

Hi, Sangeeta, Smallville too? :)

Was there a new episode last week? With all of Thursday's shows being back, my Tivo wasn't able to keep up with it all. I'm hoping I'll be able to watch this tonight instead of waiting to play catch-up.

I too am looking forward to this episode. I am excited to see Clark and Lois get and/or work together even if it isn't a reality.

This is NOT the finale. The finale airs on May 15. TVGuide - putting this under Finale Preview is incorrect and confusing.

Well, this episodes sounds and looks really BAD. Lois is a pulitzer prize winner in this world without Clark. Already, or does this world also take place a few years in the future? 'Cause it doesn't make sense that Clark has somehow held Lois back from becoming a prize winning journalist.
And why does Lex have one gloved hand? Lex only had that as President, because of the kyrptonite ring he wore to keep Superman at bay; no Superman, no K-ring, no K-ring, no radiation poisoning that required him to lose his hand!

I've been looking forward to this episode since I first heard about it. Sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun and a cool thing for the fans to see.

StarGazer:

A) It doesn't look like you even read the episode description.

B) It doesn't make any sense to link Smallville continuity to Superman comic book continuity, given that Smallville has always taken massive liberties with the general Superman mythos and from many different versions of that mythos through the multiple reboots of said mythos.

Dianora: "Hi, Sangeeta, Smallville too?"

OMG! Di, you watch Smallville too?! That makes, what? 4 shows we have in common?

Yes, there was a new episode last week, but it was HORRID. So looking forward to tonight's episode!

I love Smallville and I love that they have not gone by but deviated from the Superman story. Lois and Clark did also. I will hate, Hate, HATE if this series has this Clark with Lois!!! It is not necessary!!!

I was a bit disappointed with this one. I found the Daily Planet scenes charming, but Kara really brought down the Lex-Clark scenes.

Not me! This was the SECOND best episode of this season. The best being when it was revealed that Bizarro was impersonating Clark.

Stargazer, this episode had to take place quite a few years in the future. You have to be at least 35 to be president, and I don't think Lex is even 30 yet.

Lex might have been wearing a Kryptonite ring to protect him from Kara.
