Dexter: Season 3 Will "Change His Life Forever"

Wondering what's up with your favorite blood-spatter analyst? Wonder no more. At the Saturn Awards, executive producer Clyde Phillips filled us in when we asked about Season 3 and just how long Dexter Morgan can stay under the radar.

Previewing what's to come, he said, "Dexter inadvertently sets in motion a chain of events that will change his life not only for this year, but change his life forever" — and that doesn't mean a manhunt. "We're done with that," says Phillips. "But that doesn't mean he's not in great jeopardy. For Season 3, we had to basically start it all over. We really had to cut [the storyline] from whole cloth."

As Jimmy Smits joins the cast, it may be surprising to hear that it's not as an adversary to Dexter. "He plays an assistant district attorney who is a rising star in the city of Miami," shares Phillips. "His brother dies in the first episode and he and Dexter form an alliance. That's basically all I can tell you, other than the fact that Jimmy Smits is going to go, I believe, places he's never explored before as an actor."

And Rita, says Phillips, will be "pivotal to what goes on in the year and is part of what changes Dexter's life." But will Dexter find his soul? No, says the producer. "Once he's completed as a person, the show's over." We wouldn't want that. — Carita Rizzo

I am sooo looking forward to this new season. I guess I have to thank Matt Roush--with his high and consistent praise of the show--for getting me to watch in the first place, and the wonders of On Demand for letting me be able to watch all of season 1 in two sittings! After the first episode, I was hooked. Season 2 was equally amazing. No sophomore slump! With the addition of Jimmy Smits, and the tantalizing tidbit you just gave in this report, I am practically salivating, waiting for the new season to start. I hope others can discover the wonderfulness that is Dexter.

Yeah, maybe they'll get back to when Dexter was good. I hated about 95% of last season. I love the books, loved season one, and wanted to punch my TV during season 2. I'm not a purist--I don't think the show needs to follow the books to the letter--but it should keep the characters the same at their core. They messed with the basic foundations of the characters, most disappointingly Dexter, and I hated it. So here's hoping they look back at season 1 and bring the characters back to their former glory...

I love Dexter. It's one of the best shows on TV. One of the few that keeps you at the edge of your seat. I can't wait to see what they've come up for the new season.

Why do I think?:
1)J Smitts will be telling Dex who to kill.
2) Rita gives Dex a son (DNA related).

I got hooked on Dexter when they ran (whatever season I just saw) on regular network tv this past season. Did I see one or two?? Anyway, more than a comment, I have a question: will I be able to see Dex on network tv again in the coming year? I don't have Showtime and have no plan or desire to pay for it just to watch two shows (also a big fan of Weeds). So...I guess I'm stuck buying the dvd's of each season as they become available...but the wait sucks!
