Cobie Smulders Makes How I Met Your Mother Sparkle

Acid-wash denim, neon jelly bracelets and big teased hair are making a comeback — for one night anyway, when the totally awesome Robin Sparkles makes a return appearance on How I Met Your Mother (tonight at 8:30 pm/ET, CBS). We asked Cobie Smulders about her Canadian teen pop-star alter ego, whose first fake hit, "Let's Go to the Mall," became a real Internet sensation in 2006. — Megan Walsh-Boyle
TVGuide.com: Robin Sparkles is back!
Cobie Smulders: She's back with a vengeance, [and] back with a teenage angst love song.
TVGuide.com: We hear James Van Der Beek will be joining you on this episode.
Smulders: He's great — super-funny and very talented. He has to wear some ridiculous costumes — we kind of make him older and look terrible for a few scenes, but he's still handsome. He has been a real team player with all that stuff.
TVGuide.com: Tell us about the new song, "Sandcastles in the Sand."
Smulders: The song is a love ballad about teen heartbreak. It's pretty funny. I think people are going to enjoy it.
TVGuide.com: Singing a love ballad — is that hard?
Smulders: I'm not the greatest singer in the world, but the technology that these studios now have is pretty amazing. Anyone can go in and come out sounding OK, so I have that on my side.
TVGuide.com: Maybe you'll be asked to record a whole album next.
Smulders: Oh god, I hope not. I would not want to do that to the general public.
TVGuide.com: Do you have a favorite '80s love ballad?
Smulders: "We are young. Heartache to heartache we stand." Who is that? I like that one. And I listened to a lot of Bryan Adams in the '80s [Laughs] because he [was] played on the radio all the time.
TVGuide.com: Are you surprised by how many people have viewed Robin Sparkles' first hit, "Let's Go to the Mall," on the Web?
Smulders: I was happy that people enjoyed it so much. It became such an Internet hit and there's even a [Robin Sparkles] MySpace page, which I find hilarious.
TVGuide.com: Is that how you dressed in the '80s?
Smulders: Well, I hit the '80s young, so I did for a little bit, but then I went right into the grunge.
TVGuide.com: You were lucky.
Smulders: I think I was. The shoulder-pad look does not work for me.
TVGuide.com: What do you find most embarrassing about the Robin Sparkles look?
Smulders: She has a bedazzled acid-wash jean jacket that has [her name] graffitied on the back. If you were wearing it back then and you looked back on it, you'd think that was terrible. But I personally think it is awesome, just because it is so cheesy.
TVGuide.com: Did recent guest star Britney Spears give you any pop-princess pointers?
Smulders: No. [Laughs] We didn't talk about the music industry at all, but I'm sure she can relate to the trials of Robin Sparkles.
TVGuide.com: We hear she might be back for another episode….
Smulders: With the way the story went, it's possible that her character could return, but I haven't heard anything official.
TVGuide.com: Do you miss playing Ted's girlfriend?
Smulders: Sure. I love working with Josh [Radnor], and it was really fun to be part of a couple. I miss it, but our writers are so good that whatever situation you're in, they write really well for you. So I'm kind of enjoying being single again and doing my own thing.
TVGuide.com: Who do you think Ted should end up with?
Smulders: I think [HIMYM creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays] are getting closer to showing who the mother is and I think it is going to have to be a really special person. We have Sarah Chalke, who's going to be [Ted's] love interest, Stella, for a while and I kind of see the mom being somebody like [her], so we'll see how that turns out.
TVGuide.com: For so long, you were talked about to play the new Wonder Woman — what happened with that?
Smulders: I know there was a lot of Internet hype about it — mainly from Joss Whedon, who's a friend of mine — so that spurred some interest. I don't know where they are at with the project right now. It's a bit unknown to me.
TVGuide.com: Are you interested in the role?
Smulders: Sure. I mean, I would have to sit down and think about it, but it's kind of an amazing opportunity. I'd definitely have interest in it.
TVGuide.com: What's next for Robin?
Smulders: I think that there's another relationship in her future. And there will be more stuff happening at her job as an anchorwoman — I love doing those scenes with the terrible news.
TVGuide.com: How will you feel if this is the last season?
Smulders: I would be sad, but I think we've done some really good work and I'm really proud of what the show has accomplished.
TVGuide.com: If it ends this year, will HIMYM get the proper send-off it deserves?
Smulders: No. I think that we would have to get more into actually finding out who the mother is, and I don't think that we can do that in the last four episodes that we're shooting.

I started watching this show based on a recommendation of a friend. Honestly at first, I was not much into it. But I stayed with it and now, I believe it is what makes Mondays fun, except when Monday Night Football is on. This is show that you can use your DVR to make sure you don't miss it. It is in a way kind of like the old show Friends, but in different circumstances. I would recommend watching it and the Big Bang Theory as well. How can Robin Sparkles have been an "80s" pop star, with guest appearances in her video by Alan Thicke and Tiffany, when she mentioned in tonight's (4/21) show that "it was 10 years ago" when she was 16? That would mean that her videos were actually created in the late 90s (definitely not the era of Debbie Gibson or Tiffany)! It's obvious that the writers of the show wanted Robin Sparkles to be an 80s phenomenon, and the clothing, cultural references, etc. are all VERY 80s (take it from someone who actually WAS 16 in 1987), but if Robin was supposed to be an 80s star, then in the "current day" of the TV show, the character should actually be around my age (37)! She could still be hot and single, however! Just about 10 years older.

Mindelar, if you were a true How I met your mother fan, you'd remember that when Robin Sparkles was first introduced in "Slapbet", Robin stated that the 80's didn't come to Canada until like 1993. So, actually the show is right. You're wrong.
