Episode Recap: "What Comes After the Blues"

It began to dawn on me when I saw Lucas get Lindsey’s message on his cell as he literally stood on Peyton’s message on the river court: Are we gonna get a cliff-hanger ending? Indeed we were – and not just one cliff-hanger, but two. And I’m totally fine with that, because I kind of like the classic setup of a season-ending cliff-hanger, that whole summer-full-of-anticipation feeling. Just as long as the show resolves the cliff-hangers well and comes back strong in the fall.

So cliff-hanger number one: Is Dan dead? If memory serves me correctly, this show has pulled this stunt as a season-ender once...wait, make that at least twice before. With the very same character! This time he wasn’t in a fire nor did he have sudden heart failure, but he got hit (quite violently) by a car. And at that exact moment, he got a page that a heart was suddenly available for him. Talk about bad luck. Or, better yet, talk about karma. I guess what goes around really does come around, Dan. Ironic that it happened just as he was starting to put some good karma out there. First, he didn’t smother the reverend – for Dan, this is quite an accomplishment that shows a lot of growth and restraint. Then he helped an elderly man by picking up his cane for him and telling him to be careful. And then came that car that tossed him into the air.

So, will Dan Scott pull through once again? I certainly hope so. Because as he was explaining to the comatose reverend, he does need time to make amends. And I think it would be beneficial to Jamie, Nathan and Lucas if he could work on his relationships with them. Haley and Nathan kept telling Lucas all night that he had to let the darkness inside of him go, and I think part of that darkness he carries is his deeply fractured relationship with Dan.

But Dan can’t be blamed for all of Lucas’ problems. Lucas needs to look at himself in the mirror and accept responsibility for his recent crazy behavior. (As well as for that scary Mohawk – though it wasn’t that surprising, as Lucas has a pattern of taking his pain out on his hair. Case in point: the close-cropped do he sported as Season 2 began, back when he briefly left Tree Hill with Keith in order to escape or find himself or something like that.) Luke has to realize that it’s his ultimatums, obsessiveness and inability to let go and move on that are what’s hurting him. He can’t blame Dan or Peyton or Lindsey for any of that.

So, whom did Lucas call? We won’t know that for sure until the fall. We do know that Brooke was expecting a phone call about Angie landing safely, Peyton was waiting on a call from Mia regarding some guy who knew Ellie (Peyton’s biological father?), and Lindsey...well, I don’t know if anyone in particular was supposed to call her – maybe her office? We know it wasn’t the new guy she’s seeing, because she made him up. She still loves Lucas, and finally admitted it to him in a voice-mail message. And Peyton bravely declared her love for Lucas in a very artistic, Peyton-esque way, sprawled out all over the river court. How she was able to do that after how Luke treated her last week is beyond me. I’m glad that he apologized last night, but she accepted his apology rather quickly. She should have made him work for it a little more. Their one scene together was rather sweet, albeit brief. I just always feel more of a connection between their characters on-screen than Lucas and Lindsey, so I’m rooting for his "I’ve got two tickets to Las Vegas. Do you wanna get married tonight?" call to be to P Sawyer. But I’m not ruling Linz out as a possibility. As for Brooke, I doubt the call was to her. They have a rekindled friendship, but nothing more I think.

Outside of Dan and Lucas and his many ladies, things were looking up for much of the rest of the Tree Hill gang, who were all facing being brave as an overriding theme of the night. Well, things were difficult for Brooke, as she had to say good-bye to Angie earlier than expected, but ultimately she was able to do it. Mouth was suffering the consequences of disappointing his bosses last week, but then he stepped up and saved the new (idiot) sports guy’s day. And then in a triumphant moment, he quit. Seems like he and Millicent are now headed for Omaha. Deb and Skills seemed happy as they continued to sneak around with one another. Haley (and therefore Bethany) was singing again, and she was a really good friend to both Peyton and Luke last night (loved her "Sometimes people write the things they can’t say" line). She was back to being helpful Haley, as opposed to the self-righteous Haley we saw earlier this season. And she was happier than ever with her family, as she looked lovingly at Nathan and Jamie frolicking in the pool and told her husband, "You still make my heart race."

As for Nathan and Jamie, they both faced their fears and conquered them, with a little help from each other (and in Nathan’s case, Q). Jamie went back into the water for the first time after he nearly drowned (I forgot how many traumas that little kid has been through this season), and Nathan kept persevering on the basketball court, despite wanting to quit at times. Finally, he made a slam dunk just like he did in the old days, proving to himself that he’s still got some game.

All in all, I think it was a good season-ender. There were some special moments, such as Jamie singing the old opening theme song with Gavin DeGraw. And there were triumphs for some characters, mixed with uncertainty for others...things to keep us guessing all summer long, and hopefully enough intrigue to bring us all back come fall.

Your recap is great like always. Well I truly do think Lucas called Peyton. I can't see him calling another girl honestly. I totally root for Lucas & Peyton. Believe me or not I cried during their scene. I've never seen such an intense chemistry between two characters on screen. Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton are always amazing together.

I think one of the best lines came from Q.
Q -"If you see any hot psycho nannies out there run."
Jamie- "Not funny."

very cute.

I think but hope it is not lindsey that lucas picked. Brooke was expecting a call to say the baby got home safe. Peyton was expecting a call from the guy who knew about her biological mother Elle. Lindsey is the only one that was not expecting a call so it could have been for him. Despite everything Lucas said he would wait for Lindsey. Granted he said the same cheesy lines to Brooke and Peyton but that was hs and this is now.

So, is Lindsay pregnant? Her assistant or whomever she was talking to on the phone asked "Did you tell him?" I don't believe it was to tell him that she loved him. Ugh. Why can't her character just leave already!

Loved Deb doing the walk of shame. "It's not porn. It's erotica." That makes it better, Deb.

I'm glad I am not the only one that noticed that, once again, Dan's life is left hanging in the balance at the end of a finale. *Sigh* It was old the second time.

Why did Haley keep mentioning Brooke when she was talking about the decisions Lucas had to make? Did I miss something? They've been over for a long while, that it doesn't make much sense for me.

Well this was a good episode. I don't think that Lindsey is pregnant. I think the assistant was telling her to tell Lucas that she wasn't seeing anyone and that she loves him and misses him. I could be wrong. I really hope she isn't pregnant. I don't feel that they have any chemistry together. I think that and hope that he called Peyton. She did say that she dreams all the time that they are in that hotel and she says yes to marry him. I hope that was a clue.

I really enjoyed Nathan and Haley last night. I loved how Haley was looking at Nathan like she really loves him. And I loved how she said he still makes her heart race.

Is Mouth and Millie really going to Omaha? I hope they aren't leaving. I like them.

I kind of seen that coming with Dan as soon as he walked in the road and wasn't paying attention. I hope he survives. He makes the show interesting.

Can't wait till next season? Is it coming back in the fall or Jan. again? If it is in Jan. it will be a longggggg 8 months.

I absolutely loved the opening with Jamie and Gavin- it was the best start to the show!!!

I hope that Lucas did not call Lindsey- I don't like her character at all- she just doesn't fit in with the rest of them. I'm rooting for the call to be to Peyton- as Brooke deserves better and I think that they decided that Lucas and Brooke are better friends than lovers. Looking forward to next season- and hopefully more of Skills!!!

Great episode and great recap!
I actually hope that it is Brooke that Lucas is calling. They are so sweet together and relaxed. Is Dan dead? probably not... who would be the bad guy if he was...
Too bad we have to wait until the fall for answers.

My first thought when the assistant asked "did you tell him" was, UGG, she's pregnant. I REALLY hope not! But y'all are mistaken, Lindsay was expecting a call. Her assistant called and was trying to set up a conference call for her. Linz told her to just have them call her cell phone, so she was expecting a business call.

I can't see it being Brooke that he called -- and what a let down if he did; she know Peyton is in love with him so she is not going to run off and marry him. But as someone else posted, Haley did reference Brooke... I think that it has got to either be P.Sawyer or Lindsay.

It was a pretty good episode except for the fact that Lindsay came back. I loved seeing the Scott family happy again. We haven't really seen much of that this season. Little James Lucas Scott is just so adorable...he steals the scenes for me.
I liked that Haley was actually trying to be helpful to Lucas and Peyton. I really hated Haley at the beginning of the season. She was so high and mighty. It was nice to see her slowly get off her high horse these last few episodes and be the Haley that we used to know. I wish she would have read those predictions to Lucas too though.
Did anyone else laugh when Dan got hit by the car? I was kinda shocked at my reaction, but I found it funny... Then his pager went off... Dan's nice guy routine was a little too late. We all know they'll never kill off Dan. As much as I hate him, it wouldn't be OTH without him.
The whole Brooke/Angie storyline has been stupid from the beginning. I'm surprised that no one mentioned Brooke almost calling herself "Mom" when talking to Angie. The writers had her get way too attached way too quickly.
Lastly....the phone call cliff hanger....I really hope Luke didn't call Lindsay. I can't stand the actress and would hate it if she is still around next season. (On a side note: I watched the interview with her and Michael Ausiello and he said that she has fans now.....how can anyone like Lindsay?)
I really hope that Lucas called Peyton, so they can put this horrible season behind them and finally be happy.

Lucas is calling Brooke, they are going to get married to she can adopt a Kid, he will think of this as the good thing to do. That is my bet.

The other part of the Scott family ended pretty good, I was nice to see Dan get hit by a car, hopefully he will be put in a wheelchair and grow and beard, I like him better that way.

Q comment about crazy not nannies was priceless.

It is time to say good bye to Lins - had enought of her, also Mouth and Mil need to kick out of town as well, there story line has run it course.

Skills and Senior Mommy Scott - great match.

thanks for the recap.i hope dan isnt going to die.i dont like his character, but show would be more intesting with hi
i dont think lucas called brook, but there is a great possibility that he called lindsey(unfortunately!)because she admmited to him that she still loves him.but i really hope that he called peyton,or at least if he called linsey she is gonna say no!and i really hope she isnt pregnat, cause if so,this show will be ruined even more.
finally,we saw something happy in the show after a long time,i mean hally nathan and jamie were so cute together and what haly said to nathan was so sweet.anyway i hope season six will be much more better than season 5.lucas and peyton getting marry in the begining of the season six would be awesome, and can make amends with the whole season five!but again unfortunately i dont think the writers will let the stupid L/P/L triangl go,so easily like this!anyway plz, would someone tell me howmuch is the price of one season of one tree hill on DVD is?(for example season 4 or 5?)

:) Great recap! I am mad at the cliffhanger! eeekk..I don't think it was Brooke. I don't think the creater (Mark) would do that to them due to their real life situation, with Sophia and Chad divorcing, etc. I read somewhere that they had to change the storyline a few seasons back when Chad and Sophia were divorcing in real life, so I don't think they will go down that road.

I honestly think it was Peyton. I don't think they can keep the on going Peyton and Lindsey thing in the next season. It would get old. I just wished Peyton would of let Lucas have it for telling her he hated her, and I really wish she would get a new love interest and let Lucas realize that he was being a idot and get back together with Peyton.
I can not belive we only got one scene between Lucas and Peyton last night!

Anywhoo, the scenes with nathan jamie and Haley were just awesome. I loved the pool scene where they all jumped in. I also like Haley's new song.

Dan-sorry but I hope you die. I can not stand to look at him on screen anymore. Eekkk..make someone else a villian but I think, at least for me anyways, that that character has run it's course.

Did anyone else thing last nights show felt like a really long music video? Hahaha..anywhoo, I can't wait for the next season...

Bravo to Hilarie Burton, that girl can bring the tears! The only two times I've cried this season were the 508 LP scene in the gym and the 518 LP scene in Peyton's office.

Finally, a Lucas break-through! I've been waiting for some emotion out of Lucas concerning Peyton all freaking season! Thanks you Mark!

I thought this was a pretty good episode, but the cliffhanger was horrible. Lucas shouldn't be asking anyone to marry him at this point. And what was with the writers trying to force Brooke into the LLP triangle. It was not convincing.

the call can't be to Lindsey, I'm sure of that. I don't want it to be Peyton, it's too soon. And Brooke, well if it's Brooke, he's probably asking her in a joking manner, knowing that she's depressed over Angie and needs to let lose.

Grrr, I need season 6 spoilers already. Good thing filming starts up again in a month.

Mina-Season 4 is $42.99 on Amazon.com.

What exactly did Peyton write on the river court? I couldn't make it all out. All I saw was "I'm Free Now" and "I'll Always Love You"
